With how erratic the weather has been, being sunny with clear skies at one minute then raining the next, it can be hard to plan a day out these days. This is why our homes and indoor spaces have been a safe bet for some R&R. And luckily for us, July has its fair share of new releases both on the big and small screen that are great for a comfort watch, whether cooped up at home or the cinema. Scroll down for the new movies, shows, and series dropping this month.
DESPICABLE ME 4
The fourth entry in the blockbuster franchise finds Gru, Lucy, and their girls welcoming a new member to the family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad. But it’s not all sunshine and roses for them as Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina, and the family is forced to go on the run. The movie is now showing in local cinemas.
LAST ONE LAUGHING PH
In need of a good laugh? This Prime Video show has you covered. Hosted by Vice Ganda, the series follows 10 of the best artists in Philippine comedy, such as Kim Molina and Rufa Mae Quinto, as they try to make each other laugh. The twist? They aren’t allowed to laugh or else they’re eliminated. It’s currently available to stream on Prime Video.
THE BOYFRIEND
If you’re a fan of Terrace House, you may want to put this series on your radar. Japan’s first same-sex reality dating show finds a group of men living in a luxury beach house and running a coffee truck together. Throughout the show, we get to know more about each guy as they hope to meet their one true boyfriend. It streams on Netflix this July 9.
FLY ME TO THE MOON
This sharp, stylish, and funny comedy-drama stars Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum as two people who try to set aside their differences for a common goal. Set against the high-stakes backdrop of NASA’s historic Apollo 11 moon landing, the movie follows marketing guru Kelly Jones as she butts heads with Cole Davis as they try to sell the Apollo 11 launch to the American public.
When the White House deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is directed to stage a fake moon landing as backup and the countdown truly begins for a wild ride. Don’t let the film’s simple-on-the-surface premise fool you, it’s a pretty solid lighthearted and comedic tale on the power of PR and truth to change minds. You can watch this in local cinemas this July 10.
MARUPOK A+
Based on a true story that went viral on Twitter (if you were on Twitter during the start of the pandemic, you know what we’re talking about), Marupok A+ (Where is the Lie?) follows Janzen Torres, a hopeless romantic who goes on a dating app and matches with the seemingly perfect Theo Balmaceda. On the day of their first date, Janzen gets ghosted. This then leads to an intricately-planned web of deceit, lies, and catfishing. A sociopathic mastermind named Beanie Landridos is behind all of Janzen’s struggles. This cinematic adaptation of the true story arrives in local cinemas this July 10.
LONGLEGS
Are you ready to watch one of the most talked-about horror movies of the year so far? Longlegs takes the serial killer subgenre to terrifying heights as it follows an FBI agent whose quest to stop a deadly and elusive serial killer takes dark and disturbing turns. You can catch this in local cinemas this July 10.
THAT KIND OF LOVE
The BarDa craze hits the big screen. From director Catherine O. Camarillo comes this rom-com about Mila, a love coach who has a seemingly perfect track record in getting people together. Her skills are tested when she meets Adam, a corporate executive whose hubris makes him hard to find a match. But as they work together, Mila and Adam learn more about each other what they are looking for might be in each other after all. It screens in local cinemas this July 10.
TWISTERS
Just because we don’t have tornadoes in the Philippines doesn’t mean they’re any less thrilling to watch on the silver screen. This sequel to the 1996 hit Twister follows Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years, who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City.
She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi, to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens, the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. Brave the hurricane when the movie screens in local cinemas this July 17.
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE
One of the most anticipated movies of 2024 is finally here, and it’s a doozy. Deadpool is heading to the MCU, but first, he has some unfinished business to clean up on his quest to find purpose in life. For that, he needs the help of Wolverine for an adventure the MCU isn’t ready for. See how it all unfolds when it lands in local cinemas this July 24.
PULANG ARAW
Featuring an A-list cast that includes Barbie Forteza, Sanya Lopez, David Licauco, Alden Richards, and Dennis Trillo, this high-profile teleserye chronicles the lives of Eduardo, Teresita, Adelina, and Hiroshi during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. The drama is set to navigate an intricate web of loyalty, betrayals, sacrifices, and resilience amidst the backdrop of a war ravaging the country. The series makes its debut on Netflix this July 26 then airs on GMA starting July 29.
TRAP
Picture this: you’re at your fave’s concert, and then you learn that it doubles as an elaborate trap to capture a noted killer. That’s the case for this horror-thriller from M. Night Shyamalan about a father and his teen daughter who attend a pop concert that is meant to catch a killer who will also be there. But this is a M. Night Shyamalan movie we’re talking about, so there’s a twist, which, in this case, is that the father is also the killer the police are trying to catch. You can catch this right at the end of the month in local theaters on July 31.
BORN PINK WORLD TOUR
Prepare to relive the spectacle of BLACKPINK’s Born Pink World Tour or experience it for the first time as the girl group’s most recent world tour, which included two stops in the Philippines, is heading to theaters.
