Is it the end of August already? Well, time does fly when we’re enjoying the content we consume. And this month, we kept ourselves busy with both new releases from movies and music as well as old discoveries that brought us to those better days. Take a look at the media we obsessed over this August 2024 below, and who knows, you might find a new fave, too.

SB19 AND ALAMAT DANCING TO MAHARANI – MAGGIE BATACAN, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

@alamat.official Lakambini, kami na lang ng @SB19 Official ang iyong lakan. Eyyy!🫶 #MAHARANI #ALAMAT #SB19 ♬ Maharani – Alamat

This video lives rent-free in my head. I have replayed this video so many times and I have no intention of stopping anytime soon. I am relatively new to the SB19 hype train, so I’ve been thoroughly enjoying all the content that is fed to me by the algorithms. But give me a video where my current bias (FELIP) is serving over 9000 aura and style points? Please. It also gave me a greater appreciation for the song’s choreography in general. You can see the traditional influences and it just warms my heart to see it.

DIE WITH A SMILE BY LADY GAGA AND BRUNO MARS – MAGGIE BATACAN, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF AND RAF BAUTISTA, MANAGING EDITOR

Maggie: I think my Pinoy Card would be revoked if I didn’t mention this. Two of the most powerful and popular vocalists of this generation coming together to create the Philippines’ new go-to karaoke power ballad? YES. This song just absolutely slaps. The harmonies are on point. The video feels familiar but fresh in its stylings. The costumes are instantly recognizable and memorable. And, of course, the guitar solo featuring the strobe lighting and Lady Gaga’s slo-mo dance is instantly iconic.

Raf: All I can say is, as a Little Monster since 2011, I feel like my prayers are finally being answered with all this new Gaga content. She and Bruno gave us a Shallow 2.0 moment, and I’m eating it up.

ALIEN: ROMULUS – RAF BAUTISTA, MANAGING EDITOR

I hold the Alien franchise in high regard as it is one of my favorite movie franchises of all time. And I’m happy to report that Alien: Romulus made my inner fan happy. Set after the events of Alien but before Aliens, while surprisingly managing to tie itself to the wider universe of films, Romulus is a wild horror thrill ride from start to finish that does not relent. It may have a few stumbles, but those weren’t enough to ruin the experience. And the movie is highkey gorgeous, too.

THE ENDING OF UN/HAPPY FOR YOU – RAF BAUTISTA, MANAGING EDITOR

Whosever idea it was to put Moira’s Paubaya over the final scene of this movie needs a raise stat. The emotions were on high for Zy and Juancho’s final goodbye. It was strong enough to have tears shed in the cinema (which happened in the cinema where I watched the movie). Feelings were felt fr.

NIKI’S BUZZ ALBUM – BIANCA LAO, BRAND ASSOCIATE

NIKI’s newest album, Buzz, broke my heart into a thousand pieces, but also somehow put it back together. My personal favorite from this album is the song Magnets, both for the instrumental and the lyrics – they hit so right. If you have the time, let yourself be immersed in this album, you will not regret it.

REMEMBERING SUNDAY BY ALL TIME LOW – NICA GLORIOSO, FEATURES WRITER

Remembering Sunday by All Time Low is one of my all-time favorite songs. For their 20th anniversary as a band, they re-recorded it as part of their The Forever Sessions – Vol 1 album of greatest hits. In this version, Lindsey Stirling provides her badass violin skills, and the iconic bridge is sung by frontman Alex Gaskarth’s wife Lisa in a vocal performance that straight-up gave me goosebumps.

NEW WOMAN BY LISA AND ROSALIA – GELO QUIJENCIO, MULTIMEDIA ARTIST

Refreshing concept, vocal tone, beat, and the music video concept (plus points are the fashion and beauty direction of the mv). It’s definitely a new side of Lisa and I am here for it.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK – PRECY TAN, COPYWRITER

This month, I revisited Top Gun: Maverick, and it was just as epic as I remembered! Even though it’s not the latest drop, it’s the perfect mix of thrill and nostalgia that’s super easy to get into, especially compared to some of those other plane action movies that can be a bit much. Miles Teller totally steals the show (seriously, he made me tear up), adding so much depth to the story. On the downside, it was a letdown seeing Manny Jacinto barely on screen and with no lines—he could’ve brought some extra fire to the high-flying action.
