Kyline Alcantara shows us how to face the faceless mob with a ‘get ready with me’ video that’s equal parts sass and slay.

Kyline Alcantara, the young actress of Annaliza and Kambal, Karibal fame, made waves recently with her entry to the Asoka trend that’s been permeating the online beauty content sphere. It doesn’t feature the trademark song associated with the trend. Its final result is more understated than what has been done by others, as well. But what it might lack in extravagance, it more than makes up for in meaning.

Steering the Trend

@itskylinealcantara3 More than a makeup challenge, I always “get ready” for real-life challenges that I succumb to. When you’re a public figure, there are a lot of things expected from you. Each day you have to wake up and be ready to face the camera and people despite enduring the toughest battles of your life. And often times, people think there’s not a real person behind the social media account they’re commenting to — that words don’t sting and get to us. This is for the “little old me” who had to toughen up and paint my face not just with makeup, but also with a bright smile as I continue to go on with my days no matter how grueling they can be. This is for the rest of us who choose to #RiseAboveTheChallenge even if it is hard, painful, tiring, or feeling our dreams are crumbling — even when there are days when we feel like giving up. We rest, we continue, we dream again, and we do our best to make it a reality. Don’t let the background noise dull your shine, you can make it. Better days are coming, let us all claim it. 🙏🏼✨ PS. Please don’t be the reason why someone else gave up on their dreams and stop rising above. #TaylorSwift #ErasTour #TTPD #TheTorturedPoetsDepartment ♬ original sound – Kyline's sunflower

In Alcantara’s video, she fills the screen with various hate comments she has received online. She looks at herself in the mirror and tears stream down her face – a testament to her acting prowess, as well as the hurtful nature of the comments.

Adding to the pointedness of her statement was the use of Taylor Swift’s “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me” – a song where the star fights back against those who have made her feel small and unimportant. As the music revs up, Kyline powerfully executes each move while flashing hateful labels that have been leveled at her. She maintains eye contact with the camera all throughout, as if daring the audience when she mouths the words, “Who’s afraid of little old me? You should be.”

Kyline’s video is a great example of how trends can and should evolve to reflect issues that are relevant for the time and speaker. With over a million views, the video provides the larger online community an opportunity to reflect on and discuss the culture of hate that persists online. Kyline has never been afraid to clapback and speak her mind, whether it be to the haters or for relevant social issues. Her video is even more proof that more than just beauty and brains, Kyline has the spirit to stand tall.

Leave Kyline alone!

People who hold influence are generally encouraged to be considerate of the fact that their words may carry more weight than those without. This means that they have to be careful of what they say. This is partially due to consideration for the actions they might unwittingly inspire in their fans. It’s also for the protection of their privacy and reputation.

Celebrity worship culture can be very strange. We celebrate such people for their talent, looks, or virtues. Especially for Gen Z, we love when one of our idols give us opportunities to relate to them. Yet, our consideration for their humanity goes out the window the moment they fail to meet our expectations. And so you type out a comment expressing said disappointment. But how many of us stop to question whether this is something we would say to their face? Is it deserved or not? And even if it is, should it be said in this manner? Not enough of us, apparently.

Kyline echoes this sentiment in the caption of her video, stating, “When you’re a public figure, there are a lot of things expected from you. Each day you have to wake up and be ready to face the camera and people despite enduring the toughest battles of your life. And often times, people think there’s not a real person behind the social media account they’re commenting to — that words don’t sting and get to us.”

Social Media Nastiness

Anonymity can be an important tool in helping people speak out courageously about things that should be spoken about. It can also be abused by people who have nothing nice to say. Anyone who’s spent even a few minutes online would know that some of the more visible types of discourse that can be found online are those expressing discontent and negativity. Is it because people who are well-adjusted have better things to do than put other people down? No one can truly judge.

However, if you find yourself in a position where you are faced with a piece of content that displeases you for whatever reason, maybe you should ask yourself the following: To what end am I writing this comment? Do I think this will make the recipient better? Or am I just satisfying something in myself?
