GET THAT (SCHOLARSHIP) BAG

The British Council, the UK’s international organization for educational opportunities and cultural relations, recently announced that applications for the British Council IELTS Prize 2023 are now open. The prize is a monetary reward designed to help fund the winners’ undergraduate or postgraduate studies for those starting the academic year from January 2023 to March 2024. Competitions will be held in countries all over Asia, and that includes the Philippines, where three winners will be chosen.

“In the 45 years of the British Council in the Philippines, we have seen the immense talent of Filipinos, and we are proud to assist these ambitious and intelligent individuals achieve their goals through opportunities such as the IELTS Prize,” shared Lotus Postrado, Country Director for British Council in the Philippines. One winner will take home £5,000 (roughly 350,000 pesos), another will bag a nice £2,000 (around 140,000 pesos), and a third winner will receive a cool £1,000 (around 70,000 pesos) scholarship check.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Before you can participate in the competition, you first need to meet their criteria. Potential recipients must be 18 years or above, a resident of the country they’re applying from, and must have taken IELTS with British Council between 1 April 2022 and 31 August 2023. Applicants must have a minimum band score of 5.5.

Students must also be those who have applied for undergraduate or postgraduate studies locally or overseas and who are scheduled to begin their course from January 2023 to March 2024, and in an educational institution, anywhere in the world, that requires IELTS as part of its admission process. Finally, prospective applicants must be able to provide the letter of acceptance from your university latest by October 2023.

If you meet all the criteria, then you’re free to begin the application process, which will be split into two phases. For this year’s IELTS prize, the theme will be all about your potential to positively impact your local community. In phase one, applicants fill out a detailed form with the main component being a 500-word personal statement that answers the question: “What have you done to support and improve your local community over the last year?”

The essay will be judged based on Inspiration, Impact, Aspirations, and Logic and Organization. From those essays, 25 participants will be chosen by the judges to move on to phase two. Here, applicants will submit a one-minute video with the topic of “How will taking IELTS and studying abroad or locally help you make an impact on your community in the future.” If you impress the panel of judges enough to make it to the top three, then you can say hello to those international scholarship funds.

So, if studying abroad is your dream, then get on that application. The deadline for submitting completed applications is September 15. For more information, you can check out their website or email britishcouncil@britishcouncil.org.ph.
