When did you start as a designer?
I started designing at the age of 6 when my brother and I loved to sketch body figures and clothes.
How did you start as a designer? Did you intern or work after studying?
After I graduated, I began searching for design internships that aligned with my artistic perspective. However, I was unable to find any opportunities that felt like a good fit. Frustrated but determined, I decided to take matters into my own hands and start my own business.
How did you fall in love with fashion?
Ever since childhood, I’ve had a deep love for fashion. My brother and I would often dress up, play with dolls, and create DIY outfits for them. Our passion for fashion continued to grow as we got older and eventually led me to pursue a career in the industry.
Where do you get inspired when designing?
My inspiration comes from different perspectives and visions of my life. I create storytelling to make everything cohesive and relatable to people.
What’s your creative process when designing and crafting the pieces together?
I like to set the mood and adapt to the energy of my next collection. I always make sure to develop and source my materials properly.
How does it feel to be one of the faces of the new generation of Filipino designers?
It feels overwhelming to be considered the face of the new generation in the fashion industry because of my work. However, I make sure to stay grounded and focus on my goals.
What challenges have you faced in your career?
As a creative, the hardest part of my career has been balancing the business side of fashion and managing a team.
How did you overcome them?
I am a low risk-taker, and I prefer to prepare for the worst-case scenarios. To overcome this challenge, I took courses and workshops. I also hired a team of professionals who complemented my skills and filled the gaps in areas where I lacked expertise.
What’s the most memorable piece or collection you have created?
The most memorable piece or collection I have created would have to be the Modern Barongs. This collection was a big risk for me as it was a new take on a traditional piece, but it was also a movement towards making the Barong Tagalog a more casual, everyday piece that people could proudly wear. It was a challenge to put a modern twist on a heritage piece, but it was also very rewarding to see its positive reception and impact on the fashion industry.
What advice would you give to aspiring artists and designers out there who are just starting out in this industry?
My advice to aspiring artists and designers starting out in this industry is to start by checking out your local community and finding ways to support local artisans. Look for opportunities to innovate and create something unique that sets you apart. Don’t be afraid to take risks and put yourself out there; be prepared to work hard and stay dedicated to your craft. And most importantly, always stay true to your vision and never give up on your dreams.
