Thrifting, ukay-ukay, and secondhand clothing have been around for quite some time now, offering much-needed alternatives to expensive brands and fast fashion. Generally, Gen Z thrift for reasons involving, mainly, affordability, uniqueness, and sustainability.

Thrifting clothing lets you find good, affordable items without having to buy from brands with huge ecological footprints. You breathe new life into clothes and, often, make a statement that you’d rather buy existing fashion than contribute to this culture of overconsumption brands are pushing (at the cost of damaging the environment, too, for that matter). Thrift shops, vintage shops, and ukay-ukays also give you a chance at finding either exactly what you need (e.g. a blazer) or something totally unique that you never thought you’d love. There’s also a certain thrill to the hunt to it, where finding certain treasures can give you that boost of dopamine.

Though buying secondhand does not come without its own problems (such as resellers hiking up prices of thrifted items), it’s a very tempting option for people who can’t or don’t want to spend too much for clothing, who need certain kinds of clothing, or who want to channel their inner fashionista.

Now we want to know your specific reasons for patronizing secondhand and/or circular fashion—why do you thrift or scrounge around in ukay-ukays for your clothing? Let us know by answering the survey below.
