It’s Women’s Month, and we’re all about seeing women thrive in their respective industries—including media! It’s always a joy to see accurate and diverse representation of women in movies and series, and our recent roster of Filipino female characters pretty much hit the mark. From playful young dreamers to ambitious businesswomen, no-nonsense fighters to cunning anti-heroes, we’ve got plenty of icons from local media to stan.
We’ve got young, strong, and playful rom-com leads in the likes of Belle Mariano’s Cha from How To Spot A Red Flag and Jayjay from Ang Mutya Ng Section E. We’ve got stoic badasses like Max Alvero (Kaila Estrada) from Incognito, brave and indomitable working women like Emmy (Marian Rivera) from Balota, cunning rebels like Nicole Vega (Nadine Lustre) from Uninvited, and plenty more. Many of them differ in characteristics, motivations, goals, delivering something fresh yet often familiar to our screens.
WOMEN IN CONTEMPORARY MEDIA
Though there still persists harmful and problematic portrayals of women—even in contemporary media, even if we admire traits from iconic characters—the resistance to stereotypes and tradition is gearing towards shifts in perspectives and practices. We’ve come a long way, but there’s still a long way to go, too. Powerful women onscreen and off with agency, who take ownership of their lives, who are outspoken and confident, unfortunately still get backlash. Women from marginalized communities are also represented less frequently. The double standards also don’t help!
So yes, there’s still quite a ways to go. But these days, we’ve thankfully been given intelligent leaders, sympathetic villains, frustrating romantics, talented artists, brave souls—and that’s just a few roles women play, as the industry diversifies and more stories are being told from even more perspectives.
In the last year or so, women have taken to the screen in plenty of different ways, and we want to know: which of these female characters have become part of your permanent stan list in recent history? Who’s your fave from recent movies and TV shows?
It doesn’t have to be a competition, but rather a celebration of iconic female characters and a way for you to voice out what you believe is empowering female representation in media. The times are a-changing, and more and more female stereotypes are being broken in media both internationally and locally, paving the way to more equal and empowering representation of women on screen (and behind the scenes, for that matter).
