Suki Salvador gave the lowdown on having a career in digital media.

According to Suki Salvador, the secret to success in digital media is being a great writer, an excellent speaker, and being good at math (yes, really).

By all accounts, the first ever NYLON Manila career fair was a success. Hundreds of you joined as we learned about finding your career, knowing your right path in life, if the career you want is right for you, and so much more. One Mega Group’s President Suki Salvador was on hand to share all his knowledge, insight, and expertise on what it takes to succeed in the world of digital media. Here’s a rundown of some of the most important lessons we learned in Suki Salvador’s talk during the NYLON Manila Career Fair.

FOLLOW YOUR VOICE

It’s that age-old scenario where your gut is telling you to do something while the people around you tell you to do something else. That is something Suki knows all too well because he experienced it firsthand. Growing up, he described himself as an all-rounder who dabbled in a lot of fields and orgs. Despite the fact that he is the president of a major publishing company, he studied pre-med, two completely different fields.

During his talk, he shared that you should always listen to your voice because the universe is always pushing you in the right direction. Suki didn’t want to be a doctor so the universe led him to working at a photography studio where he fell in love with media. So, the next time that voice inside you says to do something or your gut is pointing you in a different direction, take the plunge and do it. You never know where it may lead you.

DIGITAL MEDA IS NOT JUST ABOUT WRITERS AND ARTISTS

When people think of media, publishing, or the arts, there usually is a stereotype that people have in mind. But Suki shares that just because you want to work in the field of digital media, it’s not just limited to being a writer or graphic designer. Digital media is home to many professions from accountants, advertising, human resources, analysts, and so much more. As Suki shares, there is a slice for everyone in digital media. What connects everyone together is the love for media.

KNOWING HOW TO WRITE, SPEAK, AND DO MATH WILL LEAD TO A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN DIGITAL MEDIA

Working in digital media gives you an advantage that few careers offer. It gives you cultural currency and the ability to be an agent of change. But before you can do that, Suki shares that you need to be good at three things. First, you need to know how to write and write well to help you weave words into stories and be ahead of the curve. Next, you need to know how to speak well so that you can convince people and understanding the importance of knowing when to listen and when to speak. Finally, knowing how to do math will help you do well in the industry because at the end of the day, money matters. Your math skills will help you understand profits and loss, and knowing how to keep a bottom line healthy so that your company won’t go under.
