Ten years ago, Filipino pop culture was home to some moments so iconic, that it’s still remembered to this day as low-key footmarks worth remembering in history. From the year of Wattpad adaptations to the introduction of the top love teams of the 2010s, let’s take a stroll down memory lane for these moments that, believe it or not, are turning ten years old in 2024.
THE INTRODUCTION OF THE JADINE LOVE TEAM
Ten years ago, Filipino culture was never the same when the film adaptation of Diary Ng Panget was released in cinemas. Not only did the blockbuster bring Nadine Lustre and James Reid on the fast lane to superstardom, but it also introduced the world to the JaDine love team. It was the start of an era that is still fondly remembered by many to this day. And while the two are no longer together, JaDine will always have a special place in our hearts.
TAYLOR SWIFT’S MANILA CONCERT (AND THE CORNETTO CAMPAIGN)
If only we knew how good we had it back then. Ten years ago, Taylor Swift set foot in the country for what remains to be her most recent concert in the Philippines when she performed at the MOA Arena on June 6 as part of the Asian leg of the Red Tour.
The fact that she was already in her 1989 hair since the era was set to begin in a couple of months was iconic. It was a moment in history for many Filipino Swifties, especially with how we’re still waiting for her return. And let’s not forget the Cornetto campaign that came with the Asia tour. You probably have a collection of those discs as you hoped to win tickets to her show.
ANNE CURTIS’ MONOLOGUE IN THE GIFTED
She’s an icon, she’s a legend, and she is the moment. Come on now. Ten years later, The Gifted is still a good watch thanks mainly to Anne Curtis’ knockout performance as Zoe Tuazon. Zoe got herself nominated for the mother hall of fame when she spoke Japanese at the restaurant. But she got inducted with her “Bobo” spiel to Sam Milby’s Marco Yuzon. The way she says bobo will forever live rent-free in our mind.
THAT FIGHT SCENE IN THE LEGAL WIFE
Philippine TV was something in 2014. And one of the hottest teleseryes of the year was undoubtedly The Legal Wife. Airing from January to June 2014, the ABS-CBN show attracted viewers with its compelling story and gripping drama. But no moment from the show became more remembered than that fight scene between Angel Locsin’s Monica Santiago and Maja Salvador’s Nicole Esquivel. This fight scene remains legendary in Pinoy teleserye history for a reason. The intense standoff between Monica and Nicole was one for the ages.
LIZQUEN’S FIRST TELESERYE
2014 was a banner year for the top love teams of the 2010s. Aside from the introduction of JaDine and the continued reign of KathNiel with She’s Dating A Gangster (a cultural reset if you think about it) and the finale of Got to Believe, the year was also the breakthrough of Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil’s love team, LizQuen. You may remember a little teleserye on ABS-CBN called Forevermore. It followed Liza as the hardworking, down-to-earth strawberry farmer Maria and Enrique as the wealthy, often reckless heir Xander in their first series together. After causing damage to Maria’s strawberry truck, Xander reluctantly stays on the farm to help out. The rest, as they say, is history.
PINOY BIG BROTHER: ALL IN
Each new season of Pinoy Big Brother has been known to introduce new stars on the scene. But the season in 2014, Pinoy Big Brother: All In, operated on a different level. Aside from being an overall entertaining season, the fifth main season of the popular series was the one that introduced the world to, among others, Maris Racal, Loisa Andalio, and Joshua Garcia. And while none of them won the season, you probably know what happened next to their careers.
THE DIARY NG PANGET ALBUM
Ah, now that’s real music. The Diary Ng Panget soundtrack had no right to be as good as it is. No Erase, Paligoy-ligoy, Dyosa, Kakaibabe, it is hit after hit after hit. More than just an OST, the album was a generally good and uber-catchy body of work that still slaps in 2024. There’s a reason why tracks from the album still go viral to this day. We aren’t ashamed to press play on No Erase now and then.
2NE1’S MANILA CONCERT
Picture this, it’s 2014 and 2NE1 is at the top of the world. They decide to go on a world tour and make a stop in Manila. For thousands of Filipino fans, that was the reality when 2NE1 held a concert at the MOA Arena on May 17, 2014 for their All or Nothing world tour. ICYDK, this was the concert where Dara performed In or Out with Minzy and Park Bom and didn’t teach CL the choreography. Also, this concert was sadly the last time the whole group would be in the country as they would disband two years later. 2NE1 you will always be famous!
OPM CLASSICS
If you’re still jamming to a song a decade after its release, you know it’s a classic. And 2014 had its fair share of OPM bops that stood the test of time. In particular, the year saw the release of Ikaw by Yeng Constantino, one of the best OPM ballads of modern times, and Kilometro by Sarah Geronimo, a timeless bop in Sarah G’s discography. 2014 was also when The Voice Kids PH premiered which introduced us to Darren Espanto, juan karlos, Zack Tabudlo, and Lyca Gairanod. Each would go on to have successful careers and be stars in their own right.
