From recent movies to the latest bangers, these media picks had us thoroughly entertained this month.

And just like that, another month has come and gone. And TBH, October 2024 was no slouch, with seemingly every day of its four weeks having something new for people to talk about, which included the new movies and songs that captured the pop culture conversation. So, as we head into 2024’s endgame, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite media and entertainment of the month that’s currently living rent-free in our minds. Who knows, you might just find a new gem to watch, listen to, or experience in this list.
JR De Guzman’s I’m Your Son, Papa Comedy Special – Maggie Batacan, Editor-in-Chief
I’ve been a fan of standup comedy for a long time, and JR De Guzman’s brand of humor just hits different for me. I’m used to comics yelling at me to indicate that I should laugh, and it’s fine. But with JR, his manner is a lot more chill. His delivery is almost like he’s saying “It’s okay if you laugh, it’s okay if you don’t” and I enjoy how refreshing this approach is.
APT. by Rose and Bruno Mars – Raf Bautista, Managing Editor
The way Rose only gave us less than a day to prepare for this smash. This uber-catchy track has been stuck in my mind since its release, and I’m ok with that. It’s an easy-going earworm that plays to Rose and Bruno’s strengths for an unexpected but welcome banger about a Korean drinking game. If this is just the first taste of what’s to come for Rose’s solo comeback, secure your wigs now!
Superstore – Bianca Lao, Brand Associate
I’ve started rewatching Superstore on Netflix, and I’m currently in the second season. The show features a diverse cast and a wide range of characters (including a Filipino individual too played by the iconic Nico Santos) and offers a comedic yet insightful look into the lives of retail workers. It’s my second time through, and I can’t recommend it enough if you’re in the mood for something light and hilarious.
KNT by VXON – Nica Glorioso, Features Writer
KNT by VXON totally deserves all the love it’s been getting lately (it reached 1 million streams this October). It’s just such a simple and fun song that’s a little nostalgic and so Filipino in its references and themes. I’ve had it on my On Repeat all year, and I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t make it to the Top 10 of my Spotify Wrapped Top Songs of 2024!
Whiplash by aespa – Gelo Quijencio, Multimedia Artist
Whiplash is so addictive! It’s got that perfect blend of edgy and smooth, with aespa’s powerful vocals and catchy beats really shining. The song’s production is intricate, making it feel fresh each time, and the energy feels both fierce and mesmerizing.
Lovely Runner – Precy Tan, Copywriter
I absolutely love the K-drama Lovely Runner! I may have watched it a little late, but my friends wouldn’t stop bugging me about it, so I finally caved—and boy, am I glad I did! I dove in without any spoilers or even knowing the synopsis, and that made the experience all the more exciting. I highly recommend watching it blindly, just like I did, because the twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat. To say the least, Lovely Runner isn’t just any K-drama—it’s one of the greatest love stories I’ve ever seen.
The Substance – Patty Agregado, Multimedia Artist Intern
If you hate body horror, don’t watch it. If you hate Hollywood, go watch it. It’s not the first time a film encapsulates the impossible beauty standards of women, especially in Hollywood, but The Substance directed by Coralie Fargeat includes the themes of motherhood, aging, self-exploration, fame, and so on. Anyone could find something to relate to in the film.
Don’t Move – Kristiel Andrade, Multimedia Artist Intern
I watched it right away when it was made available on Netflix. As someone who loves thriller movies, this was a good watch. I knew the main character Kelsey Asbille before from Yellowstone, and she definitely nailed her role in this movie along with Finn Wittrock, the serial killer. Kelsey’s character Iris was abducted and given a paralytic injection so she was immobile almost the entire film. An enjoyable emotional roller coaster!
Gilmore Girls – Bernice Igancio, Multimedia Artist Intern
Whenever October comes, I always tune in to Gilmore Girls on Netflix. There’s something about the warm enveloping feeling of “Fall” and “Autumn” from Gilmore Girls that makes October in the Philippines feel like pumpkin spice, cinnamon cookies, loafers, and scarves. Especially since starting my internship with NYLON Manila, Rory’s internship era really helped me chase that career high.
