From Deadpool & Wolverine to Wicked and more, these teasers and trailers just gave us even more reasons to head to the cinema this year.
While the Super Bowl is mainly a sporting event, it also has other elements that make it a moment that has something for everybody. It has funny commercials, the Halftime show, celebrity appearances, surprise music drops, and, of course, new movie trailers. As one of, if not the, most watched events on TV, the Super Bowl is one of the best places for studios to debut new trailers.
That’s exactly what happened with the 2024 edition hosting new trailer drops. Some films got new looks, but a few of the most anticipated movies of the year debuted their first trailer or teaser at the Big Game, and let’s just say it got us even more hyped for a trip to the cinema later this year. ICYMI, check out the new movie trailers that premiered during the 2024 Super Bowl.
Remake alert. Based on the 1996 blockbuster Twister, Twisters is a modern update that follows Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell as two storm chasers, people who actively chase tornadoes. Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City.
She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi, to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. Twisters is storming into Philippine theaters on July 17.
KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
No monkey business here, the latest film in the modern Planet of the Apes franchise is coming, and it looks epic. In the new trailer, we got a new look at the story, which is set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign. Apes are the dominant species, while humans are reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape begins to question what he is taught and goes on a journey to freedom with the unlikely help of a female human. It arrives in local cinemas this May.
And just like that, after years of hype, rumors, teases, and set photo leaks, we have our first look at the Wicked movie with the drop of its first teaser trailer. Starring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the movie will delve into the untold story of the witches of Oz. Before we got to know them as who they are in The Wizard of Oz, they first were two students who met at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forged an unlikely but profound friendship.
Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads, and their lives take very different paths. This is part one of a two-part story, with part two set to drop in 2025, so expect the first chapter to really delve deep into their friendship. Wicked is set for a release in cinemas on November 27.
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE
The MCU may only have one movie coming out this 2024, but it’s a big one, with Deadpool’s official entry into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, how does Wade Wilson enter the Disney fold? With the help of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), the organization first seen in the Loki series. As seen in its debut teaser trailer, Wade is taken by the members of the TVA and given a new lease on life as the MCU’s “savior”. You can probably imagine how that plays out with the rest of the wider cast of characters. The movie arrives in local cinemas this July.
THE FALL GUY
ICYDK, there’s a new movie starring Ryan Gosling as a stuntman, and as seen in its Super Bowl spot, it has everything, including Taylor Swift’s music. From director David Leitch (Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde) comes this action thriller comedy dedicated to the men and women who do all those big stunts you see in movies. After an almost career-ending accident, a stuntman must track down a missing movie star all while solving a conspiracy and trying to win back the love of his life. Oh, and he still has to do his day job. Sounds fun. It blasts its way onto cinemas this May.
DESPICABLE ME 4
As AI continues to find its way to nearly every part of humanity, heated discussions have littered social media about its place in society. The Super Bowl teaser for Despicable Me 4 (yes, there’s a fourth one) decided to take a few potshots at AI by focusing on how shoddy AI images can look juxtaposed with a voiceover talking about the benefits of AI. Okay Illumination, we see you.
This new chapter finds Gru, Lucy, Margo, Edith, and Agnes welcoming a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr. But things go awry as Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina, forcing the family to go on the run. You can see this in cinemas on July 3.
