As someone who has been on the cover of dozens of magazines and fronted numerous movies and TV shows, Liza Soberano is no stranger to the makeup chair. But among the many tips and tricks she’s learned along the way, the one that has remained a staple of her routine isn’t the makeup itself. For her, a must-do step in any makeup routine is to prep the skin first. “I feel like skin is the foundation of a great look and so if your skin is taken care of, the makeup will just compliment it,” she tells NYLON Manila. This is just part of how Liza has been approaching her makeup and beauty these days. When she made her initial forays into the medium, Liza was looking forward to trying it out. “When I first started my career, makeup was very exciting to me,” recalls Liza. However, as she became more immersed in the showbiz side of her career, makeup became less of a fun thing for her and instead more of just part of the job. “I never really had time to fully appreciate makeup.” But with a new era comes new opportunities.

Now, Liza’s relationship with beauty has changed to where she doesn’t inhibit herself in how she wants her beat to be a form of self-expression. “I’m having a lot more fun with [makeup],” she says. “I truly understand and believe it when people say that makeup and style and fashion are the best way to express yourself, and I’m finally getting to appreciate that.”
At the end of the day, makeup, and beauty in general, is more than just having a pretty face. It is a way to express who you are, no matter how that may look. And if you really want to complete that face card that never declines, Liza suggests one simple inclusion: a genuine smile.
