Kathryn Bernardo is a woman who needs no introduction. She’s one-half of the country’s most famous love team of the 21st century and a box office superstar in her own right. With more than a decade of experience in the industry, Kath built her bread and butter on rom-coms and romantic dramas, and often with her reel and real-life partner, Daniel Padilla.
And after a four-year hiatus from the silver screen, Kathryn Bernardo is back to dominate the box office again with A Very Good Girl, and she’s coming for wigs.
MOTHER-DAUGHTER BADDIES
When Kathryn announced her movie comeback, she took some people for a loop by revealing that it wasn’t going to be a reunion movie with DJ, but instead take on a kind of project she has yet do to in her career, lead Star Cinema’s unapologetic feminist romp, A Very Good Girl. The Outstanding Asian Star winner at the 2023 Seoul International Drama Awards and BAFTA and Golden Globe-nominated actress Dolly de Leon co-star in an eat-the-rich style film. Bringing this all together is director Petersen Vargas.
From what we’ve gathered, we already knew that A Very Good Girl was going to be something special, and the recently-released teaser proved our hunch. In the movie, Kathryn plays Philo, a young woman who is allergic to not serving and takes a liking to de Leon’s Molly. While the teaser didn’t reveal much plot wise, it seems that Philo and Molly will strike a relationship but suffer from a falling out with whatever schemes they have planned. But more importantly, it showed a fierce Kathryn Bernardo in her darkest role to date.
Her looks and bold eye makeup complimenting her mata-mata acting showcased Kath like never before. That crisp curse she let out at the end of the teaser (which has two endings, btw), was so good on the ears. And let’s also not sleep on Dolly de Leon, with this film serving as the first big movie project of her career. How can you not say mother? They’re competing in the out-serve games.
NEW ERA, NEW KATHRYN
It can be recalled that Kathryn’s last movie was 2019’s Hello, Love, Goodbye, which so happens to be the highest-grossing Filipino movie in history. And while the pandemic shifted the plans of everyone, there’s no denying that if and when Kath decided to film her next movie, she could have easily do another love team movie.
Instead, she made her first film in four years to be a movie with progressive and feminist themes for a generally conservative society. It’s a career move that’s unexpected yet admirable. Kath didn’t rush for her next movie role. She took her time for her next career move and waited for a script that would creatively challenge yet satisfy her. And she found that in Philo, a role unlike any she has done before.
Kathryn has always been a talented actress and is no stranger to taking on mature roles. So, seeing her translate her prowess to the role of Philo is a treat. It’s exciting that Kath unlocked a new character to play and show off a new side of herself. There’s a dark air of mystery about Philo that Kath is bringing to light.
Kathryn deserves the right to do new projects that shake up and excite the local entertainment industry. With Elena 1944 on the horizon, it feels correct to see Kathryn flex her acting muscles and shine in diverse projects. And considering how the teaser racked up millions of views already shows that audiences want and are excited for this. A Very Good Girl screens in local cinemas beginning September 27.
