THE PLOT
Based on Bob Ong’s 2010 novel of the same name, Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan follows the life of university student Galo through his journal entries that chronicle his unsettling and mysterious experiences he has while living with his grandmother, Mama Susan. When Mama Susan falls ill, Galo returns to his hometown on an island where he grew up, only to be faced with the haunting mysteries that will shake him to his core.
THE CAST
Mama Susan will be headlined by celebrity heartthrob Joshua Garcia. This marks his big-screen comeback in three years, since Mikhail Red’s zombie movie Block Z. While the list of supporting cast is yet to be unveiled, it’s revealed three years ago via the film’s story conference and look test spot that veteran character actor Angie Ferro will play the role of Mama Susan. Young actors Kelvin Miranda, Patrick Quiroz, and newcomers Miko Gallardo and Henz Villaraiz also join the ensemble.
THE TEAM
Master of macabre, Chito Roño, who’s the twisted genius behind classic Pinoy horrors like Feng Shui, Sukob, and Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara, is back at the director’s chair and ready to scare us all again with Mama Susan. Roño also directed the recent Mars Ravelo’s Darna series where Joshua Garcia was one of the leads.
Mama Susan is a co-production between Regal Entertainment and ABS-CBN Fims’ independent film outfit Black Sheep. This is the first Black Sheep project for Garcia, who considers it a dream come true. “Kasi ‘yung Black Sheep, ibang pelikula ‘yung kinukwento nila sa mga tao. ‘Yung mga hindi happy ending, mga ganun. So maganda [sila] gumawa ng iba’t-ibang klaseng pelikula,” Garcia gushes.
RELEASE DATE
Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan was originally slated to premiere at the 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival. But because of the pandemic, the film’s release date was postponed multiple times. However, the long wait is finally over as it was recently announced that Mama Susan will be available for streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video starting May 18. So, mark your calendars and get ready to experience the heart-stopping terror of Mama Susan from the comfort of your own home.
