At The 2021 Golden Globes, Comfort Was The Style Trend Of The Night

Presumably, the dress code at the 2021 Golden Globes dictated the usual Sunday’s best, but for some irreverent personalities, comfort was the name of the game in the socially distant ceremony.

Listen, the Golden Globes were anything but ordinary this year for a lot of reasons. While the enduring entertainment mantra of “the show must go on” was honored, the traditional few hours of pre-show, red carpet, and main events in one of Hollywood’s most anticipated and glitziest of nights have been considerably downsized in deference to the pandemic, of course. Sure, there were photo shoots to hero the fashion and style, which ranged from making use of nature and the more editorial sort, but it must be said, the herding of celebrities and nominees on the red carpet was thoroughly missed.

While there was no shortage of jaw-dropping fashion and scene-stealing style, there was an emerging trend that defied the glamour of the 2021 Golden Globes. Now, considering that this is the more fun sibling of the awards show circuit in Hollywood, things were looser this time around, as it was indicative of the circumstance of crisis we are in now.

Keeping Things Cozy

While most still stuck to their guns and went custom or couture, others honored the Zoom dress code: comfort above anything else. Content and cozy, these stars (nominees and eventual winners, no less) took to the less pretentious and eased up on the glamour, which made for a particularly refreshing take on awards show style. Make no mistake about it—this was by no means a disrespect to the Golden Globes. In fact, this just expanded what was once rudimentary, especially since this year, the ceremony was done in the comfort of home, surrounded by a bubble of family, friends, and furry companions. You know, just like us mere mortals.

With some taking to the 2021 Golden Globes with grayed out hair or barely-there makeup (if at all that is), there were those who went all out in comfort trading in their designer duds for something more close to home. From the stark contrasts of printed black and white silk pajamas as worn by Best Supporting Actress winner, Jodie Foster (who got to receive her nod together with her wife and dog), to Best Actor Jason Sudeikis and his now infamous tie-dye hoodie, it was quite the sight to see these larger-than-life stars relaxed and just themselves.

Unusual Golden Globes Style

Smashing stereotypes and standards, these barrier breakers in their own right (hello, Chloe Zao in a t-shirt and Sandra Oh in an olive green puffer jacket with snow and a dinosaur behind her) proved that comfort was truly king—stuffy awards shows be damned. There were a lot to take in and take away from the Golden Globes this year, but technical glitches, awkward break room conversations, and persisting lack of diversity aside, we will be remembering the standout style differently than before. Everyone can keep their best (or worst) dressed lists, because for us, nothing is more reassuring than the relaxed choices that are truly resonant of the reality we live in today.
