Hold up, how is it already May? One day we’re planning New Year’s resolutions, and the next we’re in the fifth month of the year. But regardless of how fast (or slow) time moves these days, the arrival of a new month promises a new batch of fresh films and series to watch and enjoy. This May, it’s a mix of heavy-hitters coming to cinemas and new content hitting streaming services that should make for a fun watchlist as the summer season rolls on. From action to drama, horror to comedy, check out May 2025’s new movies and shows that should be on your radar.

ANOTHER SIMPLE FAVOR

Seven years after the original, Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick return once more in the sequel that’s dripping in drama (both on and off-screen). This go-around, Stephanie travels to Capri, Italy for Emily’s extravagant wedding to an Italian businessman. But as expected, things get all murder mystery up in here when a murder transpired during the wedding. You can catch this on Prime Video now.

STAR WARS: TALES OF THE UNDERWORLD

Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld dives deep into the murky side of the galaxy, spotlighting iconic villains Asajj Ventress (Nika Futterman) and Cad Bane (Corey Burton). As part of the Star Wars: Tales animated anthology (which includes Tales of the Jedi and Tales of the Empire), this character-driven mini-series unearths new layers of morality, identity, and redemption beyond the familiar battles of light and dark. The series streams on Disney+ on May 4 (we see what they did there).

BLACK BAG

May is lowkey an eventful month for spy movies. Up first is this contained but sleek spy drama from Steven Soderbergh. It follows married couple and legendary intelligence agents George (Michael Fassbender) and Kathryn (Cate Blanchett) Woodhouse who have to balance their careers with their marriage. When Kathryn is suspected of treachery, George must choose between his loyalty to his marriage or his country. It may not be as big as a certain spy movie franchise (more on that later), but it does offer sharp writing and acting for a satisfying mystery. The movie plays exclusively in Ayala Malls Cinemas beginning May 7.

PICNIC

This cute and heartwarming elderly Korean drama is coming to the Philippines, and it’s getting a Tagalog dub featuring Nova Villa, Ces Quesada, and Bodjie Pascua together with PBB Gen 11 housemates JM Ibarra and Fyang Smith in what is technically their movie debut. You can watch this in local cinemas on May 7.

SHADOW FORCE

Kerry Washington and Omar Sy join forces in this action drama that centers on Kyrah and Isaac, leaders of a multinational special forces group called Shadow Force. Considered some of the best in the industry, the two broke the rules by falling in love and went underground to raise their son. But their peace is short-lived as they are soon hunted by the rest of Shadow Force. It screens in cinemas on May 7.

MAGIC TEMPLE

The ABS-CBN Film Restoration unit will always be remembered for its important work in the local film industry and future-proofing classics such as this entry. The remaster of the 1996 classic Magic Temple is coming exclusively to Ayala Malls Cinemas on May 14. The film follows three boys who are chosen to embark on a journey to the Magic Temple to bring back the world’s balance. Along the way, they experience hardships that will make them learn lessons about themselves. Also on May 14 is the release of the remaster of Hiling

FINAL DESTINATION BLOODLINES

Get ready to unlock a new fear. The newest chapter in the film franchise takes audiences back to the very beginning of Death’s twisted sense of justice. Plagued by a violent recurring nightmare, college student Stefanie heads home to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle and save her family from the grisly demise that inevitably awaits them all. Brave the cinemas on May 14, if you dare.

SUSPICIOUS PARTNER

SUSPICIOUS PARTNERS

This Japanese rom-com is a remake of the 2017 Korean drama of the same name. It follows Haruto Tateishi, a cool-headed prosecutor whose life changes dramatically when he meets an eccentric woman who mistakenly accuses him of molesting someone on a bus. From the moment he meets her, everything seems to go wrong, but despite trying to cut ties, he can’t seem to get her out of his life. A romantic comedy with elements of suspense, this new series promises something both new and familiar for fans of the original series. Stream this exclusively on Disney+ on May 14.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING

One of the biggest movies to hit cinemas this month, the supposed finale to the Mission: Impossible franchise picks up where Dead Reckoning Part One left off and follows Ethan Hunt on what may just be his final mission. See how it all plays out when it screens in local cinemas starting May 17.

LILO & STITCH

Disney’s latest live-action remake is almost here, and we actually have hope for it this time. Fingers crossed that the live-action adventures of Lilo and Stitch do justice to the beloved original. Watch this in cinemas on May 21.

NINE PUZZLES

K-dramas have been eating this 2025, and this new offering from Disney+ looks to continue that trend. Set to premiere with six episodes on the streaming service on May 21, Nine Puzzles follows Yoon Ena, a high school student who discovers the body of her murdered uncle next to a single puzzle piece. Uncertain of how she got to the scene of the crime and unable to answer any of the police’s questions, Ena quickly becomes the police’s prime suspect.

A decade later, Ena, now a criminal profiler, will once again find herself caught in the middle of a series of murders, with each victim linked to a puzzle piece like the one from the night of her uncle’s murder. It looks like we know where we’re getting our mystery K-drama fill this month.

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

Guy Ritchie’s next movie is giving Saturday night action movie, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The film stars John Krasinski and Natalie Portman as estranged siblings who team up to find the Fountain of Youth. The popcorn is already heating in the microwave as we speak. The movie exclusively streams on Apple TV+ beginning May 23.

FEAR STREET: PROM QUEEN

The newest addition to the Fear Street movie franchise takes us back to the 80s for some good old-fashioned slasher horror. Set during Shadyside High’s 1988 prom, underdog Lori’s quest to be voted prom queen takes a turn for the deadly when someone starts killing off the other candidates. Who is behind it all? Find out when it streams on Netflix on May 23.

F1: THE ACADEMY

F1 THE ACADEMY

Netflix’s F1 reality series has been a big reason why the sport has reached new heights in terms of popularity these past few years. Now, it’s finally time to give the woman of F1 their spotlight to shine. This high-octane documentary show follows fifteen of the world’s best female drivers as they take to the tough tracks of F1 Academy. You can stream this on Netflix starting May 28.

KARATE KID: LEGENDS

New blood and old legends meet in the latest entry to this iconic franchise. When kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang) relocates to New York City with his mother to attend a prestigious new school, he finds solace in a new friendship with a classmate and her father. But his newfound peace is short-lived after he attracts unwanted attention from a formidable local karate champion.

Driven by a desire to defend himself, Li embarks on a journey to enter the ultimate karate competition. Guided by the wisdom of his kung fu teacher, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), and the legendary Karate Kid, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), Li merges their unique styles to prepare for an epic martial arts showdown.
