After making history and bannering Filipino talent on the global stage, there’s really no stopping the great Filipina actress Dolly de Leon from taking over the world. This time, she’s about to conquer Hollywood with her very first studio project in the U.S. as an actor: The Grand Death Lotto, a comedic actioner that’s got some of the industry’s biggest stars and creatives. Now that’s the mother Dolly effect.

GRAND DEATH LOTTO

In a recent press release by Deadline, it’s now official that Golden Globe and BAFTA nominee Dolly de Leon has joined the cast of Grand Death Lotto, an original action-comedy from Amazon Studios. While her role has not been specified yet, it’s confirmed that Dolly will be in a supporting role, together with Ayden Mayeri (Confess, Fletch), Seann William Scott (American Pie), and Donald Elise Watkins (Emergency).

Grand Death Lotto will be helmed by award-winning director Paul Feig, whose recent works include Netflix’s chart-topping fantasy The School for Good and Evil, Oscar-nominated Bridesmaids, and blockbuster action-comedy The Heat, top-billed by Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock. Dolly de Leon will co-star with Awkwafina and Simu Liu, the stars of Marvel Studio’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and DC’s Peacemaker, John Cena.

Set in the very near future and economically challenged California, the Prime Video original movie features a Grand Lottery where you’ll need to kill the winner before sundown in order to legally take home the prize. Katie (Awkwafina) finds herself with the winning ticket and must seek the help of amateur jackpot protector Noel (Cena) to make it until sundown and claim her billions of dollars. Meanwhile, there’s Noel’s rival Louis Lewis (Liu), who also wants to protect Katie to claim his protection commission.

In short, Grand Death Lotto is looking to be one helluva ride filled with action-packed setpieces and, of course, a great dose of laughter. While the release date has yet to be unveiled, the film has already started production earlier this month. Dolly de Leon has also shared a clip of her in a big studio of a major film outfit. “On the lot of my first-ever venture in the U.S. as an actor,” says Dolly via her IG story. And based on her previous interviews, it looks like Dolly will make a surprising cameo in the movie.

Apart from Grand Death Lotto, Dolly de Leon is next to star as Jason Schwartzman’s evil stepmom in another comedy and in a feature film with fellow Filipino veteran actor Jon Jon Briones. Mother Dolly is booked and busy in Hollywood, as she should.
