XO, Kitty Season 2 promises romance, drama, twists and turns, and a sweet journey of self-discovery. Want to hear straight from the cast what else you should be ready for?
If you’re not caught up on this teen rom-com, XO, Kitty is a Netflix series following the life and choices of Katherine “Kitty” Song Covey (Anna Cathcart), the younger sister of Lara Jean from book-series-turned-beloved-movie-trilogy To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Matchmaker and hopeless romantic Kitty made her way to Seoul chasing love and connection—not just to her (previously long distance, but now ex-)boyfriend Dae (Choi Minyoung), but also to her Korean mother, who passed when she was young.
Kitty attends the Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS), the boarding school where her mother studied as well, and where she meets a whole bunch of people that, all together, learn a few things about life, love, friendship, and connections across time and distance.
This season, following some new romantic threads unraveled at the end of the previous one, they’re bringing in the new and the familiar, giving us much-needed doses of classic teen rom-com shenanigans, personal growth, secrets and mysteries, and feel-good moments.
“Teen matchmaker Kitty Song Covey is back in Seoul for a new semester at KISS. She’s single for the first time in a long time, and ready for a fresh start: no more meddling, no more drama. Maybe just some casual dating. Emphasis on casual,” the Netflix synopsis reads. “But she has more to worry about than her love life, as a letter from her mother’s past sets her on a wild journey, and new faces at KISS bring change. As secrets unravel and bonds are tested, Kitty will learn that life, family and love are more complicated than she ever imagined.”
XO, Kitty is known to be messy, dramatic, emotional, a little frustrating, what with the decisions and antics these kids get up to, and yet it’s still fun and heartwarming—and isn’t that just a perfect encapsulation of youth? This upcoming season promises to bring all that and more as we follow Kitty and her friends’ stories of love, family, self-discovery, and friendship at KISS.
Ahead of the premiere, NYLON Manila sat down for a quick chat with the cast of XO, Kitty Season 2—Anna Cathcart (Kitty), Anthony Keyvan (Q, Kitty’s best friend), Sang Heon Lee (Minho, Dae’s friend and campus playboy who confesses his feelings for Kitty at the end of season one), Minyeong Choi (Dae), Gia Kim (Yuri, Kitty’s friend and popular influencer who Kitty grows to like), and Regan Aliyah Dennis-Jones (Juliana, Yuri’s girlfriend)—and they got to talking about the ragtag bunch of young characters that they play.
This season, we can expect them to still be a little all over the place, a little confused, a little guarded, very much in their feels, but all still pretty endearing. They’re just a bunch of kids, after all. Prepare yourself for the new season and sneak a peek into the minds of the actors of XO, Kitty by reading the interview below.
GETTING INTO THE HEADS OF THE STUDENTS OF KISS
NYLON Manila: Something about Kitty is that she’s so driven to help her friends and family. It’s a marker of being a good friend. What are other markers or attributes of being a great friend that you value and that you’ve seen in characters from XO, Kitty?
MINYEONG: Kitty has traits of being a really good friend. She always tries to think in someone else’s shoes—that’s why she always comes up with ideas for them to solve their problems. She has a strong identity and strong opinions, but at the same time, she tries really hard to think in someone else’s shoes.
SANG HEON: That could definitely be a good trait in being a good friend, but at the same time, it could be a little too much for some people to handle or listen to.
If you could give your character a piece of advice to navigate whatever they’re dealing with in the new season—as in shake their shoulders, make them face reality—what would this advice be?
REGAN: I think for all the characters, I just wanna say, ‘it’s gonna be okay,’ you know? Not everything’s the end of the world. Your heart can take you to some wild places, but if you keep following it, it will all be okay.
GIA: Even the heartbreaks and moments of tragedy that you think will break you, when you look back on them, they [could end up being] beautiful, and they’re very precious. So whatever it is, the ups and downs, as hard as they are, enjoy it all.
What is your favorite trait about your character that you don’t relate to, but want to emulate or have for yourself?
ANTHONY: Easily, Q’s athleticism.
ANNA: You’re an athlete! You used to be a spin instructor! You don’t give yourself enough credit.
ANTHONY: That’s not really athleticism—you’re just dancing on a bike! Growing up, I was never athletic. Sports were never something I was interested in. I kinda wish I had grown up a little bit like Q in that sense, enjoying more physical activity. It’s always good to be healthy and I wish I took a little bit of that from Q.
ANNA: I think for me, something Kitty doesn’t do enough is that she doesn’t overthink at all. Sometimes, she just feels and she acts, and I wish I could do that more. I’m a very big overthinker and I get in my head a lot. I think something really inspiring and beautiful about Kitty is, though it can lead to chaos and a lot of messy situations, she just acts on feeling, and I think that’s such a beautiful thing that I wish I could sometimes do a bit more.
Which characters’ relationship did you enjoy developing or seeing develop the most this season?
ANTHONY: I really loved seeing Yuri and Juliana this season. We got to touch on it in season one, and I’m just really grateful we get to see more of Regan as an actress and Juliana as a character this season. I think it’s really important to have that representation as well, so it was really lovely to watch that relationship and that storyline blossom.
ANNA: I totally agree. I think a dynamic that I was kind of surprised I loved so much was Yuri and Dae. They have such a sweet friendship that is easy to forget about, I guess, because it’s not the forefront of the drama, but they formed such an amazing friendship after their crazy chaos and wild dynamics in season one. This season we get to see them show up for each other as friends and just be like safe, reliable people for one another. I thought their scenes together were so special and I realized that more when I watched the show back, but they have such a cute friendship that I’m rooting for.
If you could send a message to your future self, ten years from now, what would it be?
ANNA: I would have so many questions for her! I think I would tell her that I’m proud of her. Regardless of what’s going on in ten years, I think I’m very proud of where she’s at and where she’s going, and I think that’s a cool message to get from younger you, so I would love for her to hear that I’ve got her back and that I’m thinking of her and proud of her. I’m pre-proud of you. I know you’re gonna do cool things.
