Have fun and show your support, but keep it civil.

We all want to root for our favorite UAAP teams, but that doesn’t give you an excuse to be a bad fan.

There’s nothing like the energy of watching a UAAP game. Whether in person or through a screen, the vibe of being invested in hoping that your school or favorite team wins is something else. It’s no wonder whenever a new UAAP season rolls around, fan dedication is on another level. But while it’s one thing to show support to schools and teams, it’s another to turn that dedication into an excuse to be a bad fan.

In the same way UAAP athletes are expected to uphold sportsmanship, it’s fair for that same energy to be applied to the fans as well. The fervor around the competition should never be used as a reason to leave etiquette at the door. Below, get a crash course on a few must-know things when it comes to being a good UAAP fan.

KNOW THE CHEERS

It sounds pretty simple, but we all know those people who attend games without knowing the traditions. If you’re the type to watch games live at the venue, be an active participant and know the cheers of the school and/or team you’re rooting for. Not only are you joining other fans in cheering on the players, but it’s also a nice way to practice school spirit and camaraderie.

IT’S STILL A GAME AT THE END OF THE DAY

The UAAP has been home to some of the most tense and iconic games in Philippine collegiate history. With rivalries that span decades, things can undoubtedly get heated. But reserve that passion for the cheers and relax because these are still college games when all is said and done. People can get so caught up in these matches, but it’s honestly not worth it to pick or get into fights, both physical and virtual. If your school or team loses, take the L and move on, not beef with other fans.

DON’T MAKE THE EXPERIENCE BAD FOR SOMEONE ELSE

The UAAP is a communal experience meant to be enjoyed by students and fans. Being selfish and even gatekeeping the games is not the vibe, bestie. If you’re watching the games in person, remember that you’re in a public place, so mind your manners, respect other attendees’ personal space, and don’t cause discomfort for viewers. Everyone is there to enjoy, so don’t ruin the experience for others by being a jerk or taking out your emotions and frustrations on other fans or attendees.

BE A GOOD VIEWER

We all have our favorites, but that is not an excuse to disregard etiquette. Cheer for the players, sing the school anthem but also respect the school anthem of the opposing team, that’s the least you can do. More importantly, don’t take out your emotions on others. A real UAAP fan respects other fans, athletes, schools, and teams.

DO NOT INSULT FANS AND PLAYERS

It goes without saying that bullying and insults have no place in the UAAP. Yes, matches can get heated and intense, but don’t direct your ire or feelings towards other players or fans. Booing or hurling insults at the other side is not it. All this to say, think before you speak or comment. And no, just because they’re athletes doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to send them mean comments. It’s not that serious to be doing all that.
