A Gen Z musical drama all about banding together and rising above all odds? Sounds like a classic recipe for a feel-good watch.

GMA Public Affairs’ new Gen Z series MAKA follows the lives of high school students enrolled in the Arts & Performance section of Douglas Mac Arthur High School for the Arts or MAKA. Faced with the threat of their school closing, the students get a chance to save MAKA if they win a regional music competition.

Starring Gen Z actors Zephanie, Marco Masa, Ashley Sarmiento, Dylan Menor, John Clifford, Olive May, Sean Lucas, May Ann Basa, and Chanty Videla, MAKA revolves around the struggles the MAKA students face in school and in their personal lives. Through music, newfound friendships, and faith in their ability, these kids try to surmount all odds—with the potential guidance of a new teacher.

FROM ONE GENERATION TO ANOTHER

Joining the Gen Z cast is veteran actor Romnick Sarmenta, playing the jaded, angry new teacher and alumnus of MAKA. After graduating from MAKA, Sir V made himself a success story, but returns to the town carrying the shadows of a controversial past. He reluctantly starts teaching at the school, harboring plenty of resentment, but gains newfound hope when he witnesses Zeph (Zephanie) singing.

From putting the young aspirants through bootcamp while also dealing with his secret being revealed to the school, Sir V powers through his own struggles to (albeit begrudgingly at times) maximize the potential of his students.

What’s a teen drama without the juvenile shenanigans and canon events that mark teenhood (for better or for worse)? From catty teen girls to enemies-to-potential-love-interest storylines, pilosopo classmates to school rumors, MAKA serves up the drama in familiar ways. If you’re a fan of Glee or School of Rock, then MAKA might just be your next fave watch.

In presenting problems and struggles faced by the young generation, MAKA also shows how they interact with other generations and the different conflicts between them all.

From Zeph’s mother being unsupportive of her daughter’s dreams and skeptical of her skills to the competition brewing between different singers in MAKA, the show explores all the pressures and challenges that students—students in a rural, struggling performance and arts program, no less—face in their personal lives and endeavors.

MAKA delves into how a teacher and his students figure out that they’ve got a lot to learn from each other as they save their school. Along the way, Zeph and her classmates find the strength and the hope to keep pursuing their dreams against all odds, while their teacher finds a way to open up to loving music and the arts once more (and to start caring about other people besides himself).

Five episodes in, MAKA‘s just getting to the good part, and if youth-oriented musical dramas all about using your voice and pursuing your dreams are your thing, perhaps it’s worthwhile to tune in. Watch MAKA on GMA on Saturdays 4:45 PM, or watch the episodes on YouTube.
