It’s something that singer and content creator Chloe San Jose is sadly no stranger to with the level of harsh and unwanted attention she receives on social media. But does she let that get to her? You bet not. Chloe stays thriving all while focusing on her well-being in the face of what people have to say about her. Below, read what the Gen Z personality says about protecting your peace, prioritizing your well-being, and more.

What does “protecting your peace” mean for you?

Protecting my peace means to me that I will cut off people who are not respecting the peace that I’m making for myself, doing things na nagbibigay peace sa akin like my content, spending time with people that I love. Giving back to others, that’s peaceful for me, and just really sitting by myself and reflecting sa sarili ko.

Given your fast-paced schedules, how do you find the space for your personal time and care?

Mostly I’m able to do that before matulog. Of course I would scroll sometimes on social media. But really, it’s really praying. Kasma ko is Caloy we’re praying. Editing yung mga content ko. Playing games. Really just spending time, like a lot of quality time for me and for the people that I love.

How do you think social media has changed the way we talk about and deal with our mental health?

I think social media has made [mental health] bigger and easier to talk about, because when you talk amongst family, di ba, alam naman natin, like the difference in culture. Some family members don’t see the mental aspect of what’s happening so social media has really helped with that, to be more vocal and to be more open with mental health.

As a creator whose work revolves around social media, how do you make sure your  well-being isn’t affected by the online noise?

I really cleanse my aura. I also listen to higher frequency music, abundant music, like healing music. I would put that on every night, because I believe it cleanses me when I wake up. The words that are negative are not on me anymore.

During those down days, what do you do to take care and guard your mental health?

I guess number one is really just avoiding it in the first place. Just don’t go on your phone. Or you can go on your phone pero I think avoid reading nalang the comments, because it really does impact sometimes, when you’re really not feeling good, tapos you read more pa, like negative stuff, that’s really gonna be 10 times more. So yeah, I would avoid it, and would put my energy and attention on something else, especially music. Music really helps me a lot with dealing with social media noise.

Why do you think it’s important to prioritize taking care of your emotional and mental well-being?

For me, I won’t be able to do anything if I’m not mentally well and yung being ko is not well. I don’t do anything kunwari when I’m not mentally feeling well today. I’m taking the day off. I really give the time not to do anything because I’m not mentally well. Even if we’re physically okay or we’re emotionally okay, if we’re not mentally alright and our well-being is not well taken care of, I don’t think we’ll be able to do the best, or like, the 101% of what we’re supposed to do for the day.

What advice would you give to young people who are struggling mentally?

Really look within yourself, really know what you want in life, and really think how you’re gonna give yourself that peace in mind that everyone’s longing for. Really, really look after yourself. I know it’s kind of cliche now, pero how are you really gonna look after other people if you haven’t taken care of yourself? Maybe you can. Pero sana, you can give pa 100% more looking after people when you’re really well taken care of sa sarili mo first. I think it really comes within yourself.
