Jasmine Dudley-Scales Is Moving Up, Chasing Her Dreams With A Smile

line
Jasmine takes a step further.

The PBB Gen 11 alum knows a thing or two about life changes, and she’s navigating all of it with grace, optimism, and compassion.

Realizing the power you have to change your own life is not an undertaking for the weak-willed. Putting yourself out there as a young aspiring dreamer comes with its fair share of Ws and Ls, its triumphs and hardships. And Jasmine Dudley-Scales knows this well. The Pinoy Big Brother: Gen 11 (2024) housemate and “the Optimistic Ate ng Dumaguete” has seen her own life change in the span of a few months—but honestly, it’s always been in flux, and she welcomes it wholeheartedly.

A natural leader, Jasmine takes on responsibility with a strong will and an open heart. She was a student leader at Silliman University, and took on more responsibilities at home after her father passed and her mother got ill. She was also known in the PBB House as someone who takes charge and does her part, “Ate Jas” becoming a nickname that stuck even after she was evicted.

Jasmine’s shoulders have carried much since she was young, and life has changed drastically plenty of times, but nevertheless, she forges on.

EBBS AND FLOWS

“I’m taking it day by day,” the 24-year-old says of adjusting to a new life after her time in the Big Brother house. Going from corporate-slash-publishing girlie to Star Magic talent is a major shift in someone’s life, and getting thrust into the spotlight, as we know, is no smooth sailing.

From (now-resolved) conflicts in the PBB house to opinions from strangers on the Internet, living a very public life has its fair share of challenges. But Jas takes it all on the chin.

“In terms of the ‘noise,’ I don’t mind it,” Jasmine says of everything that could very well be overwhelming or harmful. She chooses to focus on the good. “Each and every one of us grew up in different environments and households. I just have to understand where people are coming from and learn to adapt and be flexible in certain situations.”

NEW JOURNEYS

Having closed her chapter on PBB, Jasmine is rearing to get started on the next stage of her life. “Now, I’m at the ‘moving forward stage’—wherein I’m doing workshops, I’m finding which path I really want to focus on.”

She recently walked the white carpet of the Star Magical Christmas Ball, and has guested on a handful of events and shows, including the ABS-CBN Christmas Special 2024. Jasmine is most excited about performing, taking part in her acting workshops and getting the chance to work alongside artists she’s always admired, as well as hosting.

“I’m not closing my doors to anything,” she reveals. “Whatever comes my way, I’m not going to be picky. I’m going to take everything in and enjoy the process.”

Going from one place to another (she moved to Manila from Dumaguete when she was younger “with no plan”), one career trajectory to another (from working at an NGO to going into corporate and media to taking on stages and red carpets), one dream to another, Jasmine acknowledges how scary change could be. We often get trapped, stuck where we are because we get too comfortable. But much like how a whole world of possibilities have been opened to her and how her horizons have been broadened during her time in PBB, perhaps, sometimes, change is good.

“We can’t stay in one place all our life,” she says. “We always have to move up one step at a time. It doesn’t have to be big steps, it could be little steps. You just always have to push forward.”

DO IT SCARED

Though not everyone perhaps dreams of joining Pinoy Big Brother, people often dream of living different lives—exciting ones. Lives where every day is different and you look forward to the days ahead. But how many of us truly set out to make that happen?

“For me, it’s scarier when you’re stuck in one place because you just get too comfortable.” Knowing that change is both unavoidable and can be kickstarted yourself is important, and so is knowing when to move on and move up from wherever you are in life. For the young talent, there are two signs to do just that.

“When you’re the best at something already, you have to move on. You have to learn,” she says. Taking the opportunity to learn and grow rather than stay comfortable is an easy decision for her—even if the road to getting wherever she wants to go next is a little rough.

“You also have to change when the situation isn’t really for you,” she adds. “If you feel like you’ve tried your best and dedicated so much time and effort, but it’s really not for you, then maybe it’s God’s redirection.” Knowing yourself and listening to your gut is essential to helping yourself move on from something that’s not beneficial or no longer meaningful to you.

So for Jas, when you’re too comfortable somewhere, you will no longer learn if you don’t get up and go. And if you’re at a place where you feel like you’ve tried your best, but it really doesn’t feel right, that’s also a sign it’s time to embrace the promise of change, despite the fear.

“Life is too short,” she states. The fear and the hesitation will always be there, but all you have to do to see what can happen is to take the leap. “Do it scared. It’s better to say ‘at least I tried’ than ‘oh, I wish I did this’ or ‘what if I did this’.”

Chasing your dreams, though, can be daunting. Whatever dreams they may be, the road ahead will be fraught with challenges and failures—plenty of canon events to go around. It’s scary! But sometimes, as Jasmine did by entering PBB, you just have to go for it. Shake things up. For the things we want—and we want plenty of things badly—we either take the risk or we lose the chance. Change can also do us some good. It can help us reach those dreams and make a better life for ourselves.

“Change is inevitable, but it’s necessary,” she adds. “Just keep on chasing your dreams with a smile.”
