It only felt like yesterday that we wondered what would happen to Deadpool when news of Disney buying Fox first broke. Years later, we now know. Deadpool & Wolverine, the third entry of the popular Deadpool movie franchise, is coming at an interesting time for the MCU, with the storied cinematic universe currently at a low point.
As the only MCU movie this 2024, the Deadpool hype is undoubtedly real, especially considering the promo tour stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have gone on. Arguably the biggest movie of the year is right around the corner. But before you make plans to see the movie at the end of July (July 24, to be exact), we break down a few key points you should know about the film, coming from someone who had the chance to watch the first 37 minutes of the movie. And yes, we’ll keep the spoilers to a minimum.
IT’S HAS A LOT OF CALLBACKS, CAMEOS, AND REFERENCES
If you’re well-versed in Marvel lore, then you’ll find Deadpool & Wolverine to have a good dose of easter eggs to find. From callbacks to the MCU to references from the X-Men comics, cameo appearances, and more, the movie holds its love for the lore on its sleeve. By the way, keep an eye out for the Marvel Studios logo trailer at the start of the movie, you’ll spot a cool surprise.
YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE MCU TO GET STARTED
With dozens of movies and multiple timelines and universes, it can admittedly be hard to get into the MCU these days if you aren’t an ardent follower of the films and shows. But Deadpool & Wolverine smartly makes itself accessible to casual viewers while still making sense in the wider MCU. There’s no need to know everything going into the movie as it’s relatively explained to the viewer. But, if you really want to be prepared, we suggest you brush up on Loki (at least season 1), Deadpool 1 and 2, and Logan.
IT’S STILL R-RATED DEADPOOL
For anyone worried that Disney would pressure the team to create a more PG Deadpool, rest assured, the R-rated madness is still there. From blood, guts, violence, cursing, crass humor, and more, Deadpool is still Deadpool and the Merch with a Mouth still has a mouth. Bonus points also for turning Wolverine a lot gritter than we’ve seen of him in most of his movie appearances.
THERE’S MORE TO DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE THAN JUST BEING AN EXCUSE TO BRING BACK WOLVERINE
You would think that with all the turmoil the MCU is facing, Deadpool & Wolverine would break the 4th wall to make it so that Deadpool was here to save them all and be the “Marvel Jesus”. But there’s so much more to Deadpool & Wolverine than that. Yes, there are jokes at the MCU’s expense, but the movie is not just fan service to bring back Wolverine or be a landing pad for the X-Men to join the MCU.
It has a story that goes beyond cameos galore and R-rated violence. Deadpool and Wolverine are two people who are going through things, both internally and externally. What those are, we don’t want to spoil. But ultimately, it’s a movie about friendship and broken people finding their place, purpose, and spark once more.
WHAT YOU’VE SEEN IN THE TRAILERS WAS JUST A FRACTION OF THE MOVIE
Let’s just say this, most of what you’ve seen in the trailers were in the first 37 minutes of the movie. There are still a lot of surprises and narrative developments waiting to be uncovered.
