Since their debut in 2022, the fierce young women of P-pop girl group G22 have been a beacon of light for all confident, tough girlies out there or those who want to tap into their inner alphas. From their empowering music to their don’t-mess-with-us energy, leader and main rapper AJ Yape, lead vocalist Alfea Zulueta, and youngest and main vocalist Jasmine “Jaz” Henry are quickly making indelible marks on the Philippine pop scene.
Known for their hard-hitting music and their girl power, G22 is carving a different path for themselves. They stray away from cheerful or bubbly concepts, instead choosing to own their tough-girl image and embrace their femininity in distinct and unconventional ways. Nicknamed “P-pop’s female alphas,” they seek to empower women through music, break stereotypes, and stay true to themselves in this wild and fast-paced industry. Why are they “female alphas” you ask? Here are a few reasons.
DEBUTING WITH A BANG (LITERALLY)
G22 debuted on February 25, 2022, with BANG!, a spunky, pop/rap track that immediately set the group’s’ identity in stone: they’re tough, empowered young women with killer looks, killer songs, and killer stage presence, and if you’re not ready for them, that’s a you problem. They want to be on top, and they’ll make their way there with their talent.
WHEN THEY SING AND PERFORM EMPOWERING SONGS
With mixes of Filipino and English lyrics, intense, catchy hooks, and themes of power, every beat and lyric of G22’s music is like the stomp of a boot. Each song touches on embracing one’s confidence, facing challenges, and channeling inner strength. With lyrics like “Don’t you complain like I got you caged / When you got one foot out the door / I’m not entertained by all of your games” from Boomerang and “Katapangang nagmula lahat sa kalangitan / Magliliyab na sa buong kalawakan” from Takin’ Over, there’s little debate that these girls are truly alphas.
HIGH-ENERGY LIVE PERFORMANCES
Did someone say stage presence? G22 wouldn’t have boasted their “female alpha” status if their aura wasn’t as striking as their music. With immensely stylish ‘fits, fervent choreography, stable vocals, piercing stares, unrelenting face cards, and a confidence that shakes a stage, each G22 performance will have you itching to kick down doors and channel your own inner alpha.
RISING UP TO A NEW ERA
Being a female alpha isn’t just always being tough and intense 100% of the time—strength and confidence is also found in the simple courage to find joy and continue forward in life. After member Bianca left for personal reasons in September of 2023, AJ, Alfea, and Jaz proved that they were sticking together and with their Bullets (their fandom name) as a trio. They released a cover of Dionela’s Musika as a gift to their fans and a promise to continue on forward. With their sweet vocals and a lovely visualizer video, Musika marked a new era for G22 to be even stronger together.
MAKING A SONG FOR SHAKE, RATTLE, & ROLL EXTREME
G22 took on a spooky challenge as they released LOKA, a special single from the soundtrack of Shake, Rattle & Roll Extreme, the 16th edition of wildly-popular horror anthology franchise Shake, Rattle & Roll. G22 even recreated scenes from the iconic franchise. LOKA, co-written by member AJ, is a buzzing, dark but upbeat track about battling inner demons and overcoming hardships. It has eerie undertones in its themes and production—perfect for the movie.
MAKING THEIR OWN COVER ART
On the G22 Instagram page, the group revealed LOKA cover art designed by the members themselves. AJ, Alfea, and Jaz aren’t just musical artists, but they’re clearly visual artists as well. Talk about talented. Tapping into their creativity and venturing into design is also the marker of a female alpha as they don’t let themselves and their creativity be caged.
EVERY TIME THEY WALK INTO A ROOM
G22 exudes such superstar aura. Their outfits, styling, and makeup are always on point, with cutting eyeliner, blinding glitter, and leather and chains and studded platforms that could scare the weak away. Wherever they go together, P-pop’s female alphas always look the part. Make way!
