2022 has been a breakout year for Filipinos in the global music scene. And that breakthrough success was further solidified when multiple Filipino-Americans bagged multiple nominations for the 2022 Grammys. The 64th Grammy Awards saw a few new rules and changes applied following years of scandal when it came to the voting process. Among other things, the number of nominees for the Big Four categories was increased from 8 to 10. This year also saw over 22,000 submissions be submitted to the Recording Academy for consideration.
FILIPINAS BAG MULTIPLE NOMINATIONS
Ever since Olivia Rodrigo dropped her smash hit Driver’s License back in January this year, it’s been nothing but achievements and milestones for the 18-year-old actress and singer. Starting off her year with a bang, she can proudly end it with over seven Grammy nominations. The first-time used http://online-pharmacy.org nominee is up for all of the Big Four categories: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. She also picked up nominations for Best Music Video, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Pop Solo Performance.
With this feat, Olivia makes history as the first-ever Filipina to be nominated for the Big Four categories at the same award show. She also is the second youngest person in history to be nominated for the big awards in the same show. (If you’re curious, the youngest is Billie Eilish.)
And then we have Fil-Am rapper Saweetie who has two nominations. She is up for Best New Artist alongside Olivia and Best Rap Song for Best Friend. She recently won Best New Artist at the 2021 MTV VMAs, so it’s a much-deserved nomination. Finally, there is previous Grammy winner H.E.R. who is the most nominated Filipina of the show with eight nominations. This ties her for the second most nominated artist at the 2022 Grammy awards. H.E.R.’s nods also make it the most nominations a Filipino received in a single Grammy awards. She received nominations in categories like Best Song Written for Visual Media, Best R&B Album, Best R&B Song, Best Traditional R&B Performance, BEST R&B Performance, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. The Fil-Am domination also continues with Bruno Mars, who picked up four nominations under Silk Sonic. And there’s country singer Elle King (her father is Fil-Am comedian and actor Rob Schneider) who’s nominated with Miranda Lambert for their song Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home).
Multiple bad-ass and barrier-breaking Grammy-nominated Filipinas; we love to see.
SURPRISES AND SNUBS
Of course, this wouldn’t be the Grammys if there weren’t any surprises and snubs. Jon Batiste surprised many by coming out as the most nominated artist of the night with 11. He is followed by Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, and H.E.R. with eight. Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish each picked up seven nominations. Lady Gaga and Lil Nas X follow behind with five nominations. Taylor Swift walked away with just one nomination, but it was for Album of the Year for Evermore. Its sister album Folklore took home the same award last year. Selena Gomez and ABBA also score their first-ever Grammy nomination, believe it or not.
Agatha All Along from WandaVision got nominated for a Grammy, which was a fun and deserving surprise. And one of the song’s composers, Robert Lopez, is Pinoy and a two-time EGOT winner. While in an ironic situation, The Weeknd got three nominations. This is despite the fact that he said he would never submit his work to the Grammys again after his shocking snub last year. He got nominated because the Grammys are implementing a new rule where anyone who had a hand in working on an album that is nominated for Album of the Year will get a credit. The Weeknd received his nominations through Kanye West’s DONDA and Doja Cat’s Planet Her albums, which both received Album of the Year nominations.
Finally, quite a few were expecting to see BTS get multiple nominations following last year’s single nominations. But instead, they just got one nomination, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for Butter, the same category they were nominated for last year.
