WEAPONS – RAF BAUTISTA, DEPUTY EDITOR

Sinners, watch your back, Weapons is coming for your spot. It didn’t take much for me to get hyped for this horror movie, considering that it was directed by Zach Cregger, who gave us 2022’s Barbarian. I loved that movie, and it’s safe to say that Cregger has gone 2-0 with Weapons. Scary, intense, and surprisingly funny, the movie had me in a grip with its interconnected storylines and greater mystery of what happened to a group of school kids who disappeared one night. No spoilers here, but when everything is revealed, it makes for a helluva finale.

THE NAKED GUN – RAF BAUTISTA, DEPUTY EDITOR

Are big-screen comedies back? If they follow in the similar mold as The Naked Gun, then we hope so. I haven’t had a good laugh from a Western movie at the cinema in a while, and this film gave me that. It’s dumb fun, but done smartly, while balancing being a homage to the original and giving something new. The jokes come every 30 seconds, and I love how Liam Neeson commits to the bit. It makes for a great time and one of the funniest movies of the year IMO.

SOME NIGHTS I FEEL LIKE WALKING – RAF BAUTISTA, DEPUTY EDITOR

Petersen Vargas, you did your big one. The director’s fifth film is arguably his best to date with its striking story, stunning visuals, and excellent acting. Manila’s gritty streets and the dream-like and surreal vibe of rural towns combine for a queer tale of male sex workers who, even for just one night, discover that they have control of how their bodies are used and seen. One of the best Filipino movies of the year fr.

THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY – BIANCA LAO, SENIOR BRAND ASSOCIATE, AND GELO QUIJENCIO, MULTIMEDIA ARTIST

What a delight it is to be living in the same timeline as the height of the Jenny Han universe. Prior to TSITP, I had only consumed To All The Boys I Loved Before and XO, Kitty and deeply enjoyed their stories – but I underestimated how much of a hold The Summer I Turned Pretty series would have on me. Over the long weekend, I dove in deep – from reading all the books in under five days to catching up all the way to season three. Within the Jenny Han-verse, there’s no doubt that TSITP is my favorite; the characters are so human— flawed, tender, and real. The story doesn’t just entertain, but it takes you through quite the emotional rollercoaster. I am also Team Conrad and will die on that hill!

If you haven’t seen the series, please take the time and watch it on Prime Video, besties! You won’t regret it. – Bianca

I’ve been waiting for this since the start of the year. Recently, they released Episode 7, and it’s the most hands-over-head and heart-shattering episode/moment so far as someone who is Team Conrad through and through. I won’t spoil much, but if you love the beach confrontation scene in season 2, you will definitely feel all the emotions in this specific beach confrontation scene in episode 7 of season 3. – Gelo

A THOUSAND SHIPS BY NATALIE HAYNES – NICA GLORIOSO, FEATURES & POP CULTURE WRITER

A THOUSAND SHIPS

I’ve always been a big fan of feminist retellings of Classical Greek myths (shoutout to Circe by Madeline Miller), and A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes was a crushing, immersive, and enthralling read about the lives and experiences of the women involved in the Trojan War—from the wives who died in the war to the goddesses who had a hand in it, from cursed priestesses to mothers- and daughters-turned-slaves—and the damage caused by wars and men. This novel is a tale of heroes and heroism in its own right.

SURF BY NCT WISH – GELO QUIJENCIO, MULTIMEDIA ARTIST

NCT Wish is back again with their written-in-a-blue-glitter-pen summer song – Surf. I love how light, fun, and breezy the song and MV are.

THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS BY ALI HAZELWOOD – PRECY TAN, CREATIVE SERVICES COPYWRITER

The Love Hypothesis is such an addictive read that never fails to make me smile. I’m rereading it ahead of the movie adaptation, and the casting looks amazing, which reminded me why this book hooked me in the first place. It was my introduction to Ali Hazelwood, and even though her tropes are familiar, I always eat them up. The mix of smart, swoony romance with nerdy, awkward charm keeps me hooked every time. By the last page, I’m always ready for more.

PARK BOGUM’S MANILA FANMEET – RICHMOND ORPIA, MULTIMEDIA ART INTERN

After six long years, Park Bogum finally returned to the Philippines with his fanmeet, #BeWithYou. AND WHEN I SAY THAT THE WAITING GAME IS WORTH IT, IT IS SUPER WORTH IT! He gave his Filipino friends a night to remember, or better yet, a year to remember! From the fun and heartfelt interviews to the energetic and soulful performances, the fun interactions with his fans, and more, Park Bogum really poured out his purest and most genuine heart into that almost six-hour fanmeet.

There were so many highlights that night, including his line, “CHOO CHOO! lalarga na” during the interview segment. What made it so cute was the way he said it. His effort in learning Tagalog and speaking English for his fans was so admirable. Another highlight was when he showed up in the lower box, going up and down the stairs just to greet everyone in that section. And even after the entire program ended, he still had the energy to meet thousands of fans at the venue with his Hi-Bye session. I still giggle and kick my feet whenever I remember how he gave me his brightest smile and sent the most energetic flying kisses, even when he was tired. Without a doubt, this was one of the best fanmeets I’ve ever experienced. 박보검 감사합니다!

ROCKY’S MANILA FANCON – BEA LORENZO, INTERN

Since 2017, I have been a fan of ROCKY, especially his former group ASTRO. When he came here to the country last August 2, I had the opportunity to attend his fan concert. I am so glad to have met ROCKY after eight years of knowing him as a fan and even had a close encounter! He also truly cherished his Filipino fans through fan service. I hope to see him again!
