It’s September, which means it’s the start of a few important things. As the beginning of the ber months, it’s the time when Filipinos start preparing for Christmas, naturally. The month also brings with it new TV shows and movies for us to watch and binge as we gear up for the holidays. If you’re looking for something to watch this September, we’ve got you covered. Here are the new movies and TV shows of September 2021 that should be on your radar.

SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS
It’s time for the Asian superheroes to shine in the MCU. In this game-changer, Simu Liu plays Shang-Chi, whose life gets turned upside down as his past, the Ten Rings organization, and his father, Wenwu (Tony Leung) aka the real Mandarin, come back into his life. It’s nice to finally see a new property enter the MCU and who knows what doors this may open in the future. Marvel’s first Asian-led superhero movie is also stacked with Asians both on and off the camera, which makes for some much-needed representation. The movie will hit theaters on September 3.
CINDERELLA
The latest iteration of Cinderella is here and honestly, this may be hit or miss. This new version stars Camila Cabello as the titular character. The movie does have a few things that help it stand out from other versions. First, it’s a modern movie musical and the songs featured in the film are contemporary songs. Second, it features the first-ever black non-binary fairy godmother in Billy Porter. And third, the Cinderella in this movie isn’t just interested in marrying prince charming. This modern interpretation sees Cinderella wanting to establish her own fashion brand. And it seems that she’s hesitant to marry the prince if it means she can’t live her dreams. However the movie may be received, it could make for an entertaining watch. Cinderella arrives on Amazon Prime Video on September 3.
RUNAWAY
Maureen Wroblewitz is a model, host, and pageant queen. She is also about to add movie actress to her resume as her very first movie, Runaway, is set to drop this September. The film follows Hannah, a young woman raised in a sheltered household. Wanting to escape the restricting nature of her home, she leaves for New Zealand where she meets Ben (Kit Thompson), an expat who wants to return to the Philippines. The two then form a friendship that turns romantic. But their personal problems soon get in the way of what they want for themselves. Runaway will be available exclusively on Upstream on September 3.
MALIGNANT
Horror movie fans, especially those of James Wan, get excited for this one. The film stars Annabelle Wallis as Madison, a young woman haunted by dreams of murders that are happening in real life. James Wan has proven time and time again that he knows how to make a horror movie and his return to his roots looks to be no exception. Get ready for possibly one of the scariest movies of the year. Malignant hits theaters and HBO Max on September 10.
KATE
In Kate, Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays a female assassin working in Japan who is fatally poisoned. She now only has 24 hours to find those who did her wrong before she succumbs to the poison. Aside from the fact that Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a talented actress, she also has proven that she can handle action roles as seen in Birds of Prey. We’re excited to see where this movie takes us. Kate is available to stream on Netflix starting September 10.
HOUSEMAID
Kylie Verzosa and Albert Martinez star in this Filipino remake of the acclaimed South Korean film of the same name. Kylie plays Daisy, a maid who starts an affair with her married boss, William (Albert Martinez). But the affair soon turns into something much more dangerous for Daisy. While Kylie has acted in a few projects already, this will be the first time that she’ll be in a leading role. And given the steamy and erotic nature of the film, it may be her most memorable to date. Catch Housemaid on Vivamax this September 10.
ON THE JOB: MISSING 8
After years of waiting, Erik Matti’s sequel to On The Job, On the Job: Missing 8, is finally coming. It follows a journalist named Sisoy (John Arcilla) from the fictional town of La Paz. He is investigating the deaths of his colleagues as they tackle corruption, fake news, and media censorship in the Philippines. He is joined by Roman (Dennis Trillo), an inmate-hitman who helps him with the investigation.
On the Job: Missing 8 will be a six-part mini-series that combines both the 2013 original film and the sequel. The first two episodes will be the first movie remastered, as well as some never before seen content such as new storylines and additions to old storylines. The remaining episodes will be the sequel. Catch it exclusively on HBO Go this September 12.
SQUID GAME
If you’re in the mood for a violent dystopian set TV show, this Netflix series has got you covered. Squid Game is a Korean series set in a future where a group of desperate participants plays children’s games with a deadly and sinister twist in order to win 45.6 billion won. The main cast stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Oh Young-soo, Wi Ha-Jun, and Jung Ho-yeon and is directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. Aside from the interesting premise, what’s also exciting about Squid Game is the mystery behind all of it and wanting to know the truth behind the mystery. You can stream the show on Netflix this September 17.
STAR WARS: VISIONS
Anime AND Star Wars, what’s not to love about that? Star Wars: Visions is a non-canon, nine-episode anthology series that sees some of the world’s best anime creators bring their talent to the Star Wars universe. Just based on the trailer alone, the visuals look absolutely stunning. We can’t wait to see where these creators take us in Star Wars and what their unique spin will be on the franchise. Star Wars: Visions hits Disney Plus on September 22.
DEAR EVAN HANSEN
The hit Broadway musical finally makes its way to the big screen in this movie adaptation. Ben Platt reprises the he originated on Broadway. Just like the musical, the movie follows Evan Hansen in his struggle with Social Anxiety Disorder, journey of self-discovery, and acceptance after the suicide of a fellow classmate. Aside from the songs featured in the musical, Oscar and Tony award-winning composers Benj Passek and Justin Paul added two new songs to the soundtrack. Fans of the original Broadway show should keep this one on your radar. Dear Evan Hansen hits theaters on September 24.
FOUNDATION
Sci-fi fans, this one is for you. Based on Isaac Asimov’s monumental sci-fi novels, Foundation is about a group of exiles who go on an epic journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization, all while under the rule of the Galactic Empire. Given that there are at least seven standalone novels in the series, Foundation could lay the groundwork for a long-lasting sci-fi franchise. The series premieres on Apple TV Plus on September 24.
MIDNIGHT MASS
If you are a fan of The Haunting of Hill House, this one might be up your alley. Midnight Mass centers on a young, mysterious, and charismatic priest who arrives on an isolated island community. His arrival brings with it miraculous events, but also frightening omens, that suggest the priest may be hiding something sinister. Mike Flanagan’s previous work has been some of the scariest and bingeable shows on Netflix and we’re hoping his new mini-series will be just the same. Midnight Mass hits Netflix on September 24.
