There’s a new it-movie in town, and its name is KPop Demon Hunters. Ever since Netflix released the trailer last month, people have been eagerly anticipating the film for, among other reasons, its unique premise, eye-catching art style, and blend of the supernatural with K-pop culture. And when the movie finally dropped last June 20, those expectations were met, and then some.
KPop Demon Hunters centers on Huntrix, a K-pop group composed of idols Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who come from a long line of girl groups tasked with safeguarding the world from demons through their music. We follow the girls as they are about to succeed in their mission but face their biggest challenge yet when a group of male demons, led by the charismatic Jinu, disguise themselves as the K-pop boy group Saja Boys to hypnotize the world into demonic rule through their music. If that plot synopsis sounds wild, that’s because it is, but it’s a ride worth taking.
It so obvious that #KPOPDEMONHUNTERS is written by a women because only true girlies know that girls actually genuinely act like this around each other <3 pic.twitter.com/VBg7RGJ4Qd

The high concept film knocks it out of the park on multiple fronts, from the characterization of the three protagonists, the fun yet surprisingly emotional story, attention to detail, the music, the cute cat and the three-eyed magpie with a hat (whose names are Derpy and Sussie), the frenetic and stunning animation, and more. We’d gladly go through the movie’s concept art (which you can actually do here).
The enemies-to-almost-lovers arc between Rumi and Jinu had us wanting more while Ahn Hyo Seop’s voiceover work as Jinu is lowkey a revelation. Also, the fact that the members of Saja Boys are named after stereotypical concepts of idol boy group members (Mystery, Abs, Romance, Baby Saja) is sending us. Supernatural musicals have been eating this year. Also, fun fact, Lea Salonga is credited in the film as the vocals of Rumi’s aunt, Celine, in a brief scene.
Still can’t believe we got to do this 😆 https://t.co/FeItdcHsPC

The movie has netizens talking on social media for a reason, and an aspect we’re also here for that’s worth the praise is a feature you may have missed: the Filipino dub.
KPOP PPOP DEMON HUNTERS
ICYDK, many of Netflix’s titles are dubbed in different languages that you can change in the audio settings, with Filipino being one of them. KPop Demon Hunters is no exception. The Filipino dub was done by Hit Productions Inc., with Rudolf Baldonado Jr. serving as the dubbing director. LEIA, Owen Calling, and Jeula Agbayani serve as the Filipino voices of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey respectively. Bryan Allan Encarnacion, Christopher Carlo Calling, Albert Silos, Kuai Dorado, and Andrei Ayson, meanwhile, bring to life the Filipino voices of Jinu, Mystery, Romance, Abs, and Baby Saja respectively.
These actors all do a good job, and highkey, it’s worth viewing in that setting with how they blend the language as seamlessly as possible while also adding those unique quirks only Filipinos will get to make it fit better. It’s like watching a Saturday morning cartoon dubbed in Filipino, and we mean that in a good way.
Also, not only is all the dialogue in Filipino, but so too are the songs, and the Filipino versions need a listen. The team did a good job translating the tracks, which were already bops in the original audio, to Filipino. Felicity Kyle Napuli, Venisse Siy, and Maronne Cruz provide the Filipino vocals for Rumi, Mira, and Zoey respectively. We can honestly see P-pop groups perform the songs. The Filipino dub of the opening number, How It’s Done, radiates strong G22 energy.

The Filipino vocals of Saja Boys (delivered by Marc Peter Baluyan (Jinu), Cocoy del Valle (Mystery and Abs), Legendarylreyes (Romance), and Andrei Ayson (Baby Saja)) give a kind of boy group vibe we can see in our own P-pop boy groups. The Filipino dub of Soda Pop? We need a cover from AJAA, stat!

If anything, watching the Tagalog dub has us feeling like we need an animated movie featuring P-pop. Imagine how much that would eat. It’s pretty cool how all the movie’s songs were dubbed, and done well as you can feel the effort behind each track. The Filipino dub is also another reminder that Filipino voice actors are GOAT-tier and too underrated for the talent they offer. The cast and crew behind the dub, as well as the local VO industry in general, deserve their flowers.
KPop Demon Hunters is now streaming on Netflix.
