Nothing like a funny teen rom-com to give us all the feels and the kilig—or to launch people into stardom (bonus points if it’s a Wattpad adaptation). Think Nadine Lustre, Liza Soberano, Kathryn Bernardo, Belle Mariano, and more! Teen rom-coms have had a hand in catapulting them to stardom, and they’re now known as some of the best actresses of their generation. These movies or shows can be cringy, unrealistic, or eyeroll-worthy to some, but there’s no doubting their cultural impact. They’re pretty powerful!
These days, VivaOne series Ang Mutya Ng Section E is either on everyone’s minds or on their TikTok FYPs. The adaptation of a Wattpad book series is gaining traction in pop culture, and leading the charge alongside co-star Andres Muhlach and the boys of Section E is young actress, singer, former P-pop idol, and performer Ashtine Olviga. Get to know the rising star below!
SHE’S THE NEW GIRL IN CLASS
At present, Ashtine Olviga is finding success as the beloved “palaban” lead Jayjay, the titular mutya in Ang Mutya Ng Section E. Her “natural” acting and straight-off-the-pages portrayal of the tough, resilient Jayjay have endeared her to audiences, and comes off pretty inspiring as a strong young girl that’s ready for anything. She’s smart, dependable, quick on her feet, and can square up with the rowdiest of boys or stand up to the prissiest of girls, and Ashtine plays what is arguably a cliché with enough depth, vulnerability, and plenty of comedic chops.
This isn’t Ashtine’s first acting role, but it is her first lead role. She’s had roles in Sisters Forever and Will You Be My Ex?, among others, but AMNSE may very well be her breakthrough.
SHE’S GOT P-POP ROOTS
ICYDK, Ashtine was a member of a couple of P-pop groups long before she took on the role of Jayjay. In 2017, she debuted in P-pop group UGG or U Go Girls. In 2019, she became part of P-pop supergroup PPop Generation (Team A). That same year, she also made her solo debut with the single Sabihin Mo Na. Ashtine then became known in 2021 as a member of girl group LITZ, who debuted in 2022 with Kidlat. None of these groups are currently active, but its members, like Ashtine, have gone on to focus on other things and finding success in them.
SHE’S ALSO A REALITY COMPETITION SHOW ALUM
Jayjay’s not the only confident, headstrong girl in this town! Before she debuted as a member of a P-pop group, Ashtine competed in the first season of reality competition talent show Born to Be A Star in 2016. Shanne Dandan (yes, that Shanne Dandan!) went on to win the show, but it gave Ashtine enough push and opportunities to start her own career.
SHE’S FAMILY-ORIENTED
Since she was young, Ashtine’s also done everything for her family. “Umaawit po ako para sa mommy ko,” she says in her audition clip for Born to Be A Star. She’s also a big sister through and through! Though there are even compilations of her kulitan with her younger brother (naturally), it’s clear through her vlogs that she cares for and loves her family.
SHE’S ALSO A VLOGGER
Getting a glimpse into the offscreen lives of our faves is always a welcome treat, and Ashtine often lets us in on her daily life through her vlogs on YouTube. Though these days she may be too busy to make vlogs as frequently as she used to, her channel is still something we can browse through and use to get to know her as Ashtine and not just as Jayjay.
SHE’S GOT TALENT FOR DAYS
We love a multi-talented it-girl. At 23, Ashtine’s already shown what she can do as a singer, dancer, performer, idol, and actress—and she’s just getting started. The world of showbiz is huge and diverse, and though she’s currently blazing a trail as an actress, Ashtine’s finding ways to live out her other dreams, too, by singing and performing at promotional mall shows, singing and dancing with her co-stars behind the scenes, and more. We (and clearly the public) want more of Ashtine, and we can’t wait to see not only what she can do as Jayjay, but also what’s next for the young artist.
