The Nation’s Girl Group is shaping up to be a global force, as evidenced with their surpassing of one billion streams on Spotify, but they’re not losing sight of what matters. After the successful year they’ve had, Jhoanna, Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, and Sheena of BINI continue to take unwavering steps and leaps of faith in their career. From global collaborations to an upcoming world tour, BINI’s list of achievements grows as steadily as their fanbase. And trust, this is only the beginning.

With their newest collab with Spanish-Mexican artist (and girlboss in her own right) Belinda, BINI adds another notch on their belt as young artists taking on the world. Following tracks with international artists like eaJ and Agnez Mo, the girl group furthers their message of empowerment and diversity with Blink Twice (Dos Veces Remix).

NYLON Manila sits down with BINI to hear the deets of their latest collaboration, how they’re inspiring the young women of the world, and embracing change as pioneering young Filipina artists.

SHAKING THINGS UP

Working with international artists is another dream-come-true experience for the group, and is a natural step to take after achieving as much as they have. In this era of social media, TikTok, streaming, and globalization, barriers in music and culture have long been turned to rubble, allowing artists from all backgrounds and cultures to find success and let their voices be heard—and to work together to maximize their joint slay even when separated by oceans.

“We’re able to share and introduce Filipino music [to the world],” Colet says of collaborating with artists from all over the world. “We also meet amazing experts and sobrang galing na producers who we can learn from and help us grow. Naho-hone yung craft namin as singers and artists, and we’re also able to share each other’s culture.”

“Collaborating with international artists is new to us,” Stacey admits. “So I think what we learned from it is to be more creative in adding flavors to our songs, to get out of our comfort zones.” Though there’s a distinct “BINI” color to their discography, and plenty of fans want to see all kinds of music and styles from the girl group, they’ve proven they can slay whatever vibe they go with. Just watch their cover performances during their concert tours, trying out different genres and styles and always bringing something new to the stage.

“We believe that music has no rules, so go lang ng go,” Stacey continues. “So whatever ideas ang pumasok sa isip namin, go lang as long as it’s super creative, it’s good, and…it’s lovely!” (The girls giggle endearingly at her addition.) Collaborating with Belinda and adding her full verse in Spanish is an effort to bridge cultures, a statement that music transcends cultures and language, and an empowering message to women all over the world.

HEADFIRST, FEARLESS

Blink Twice is yet another shred of proof that BINI has always prided themselves on having women’s backs. Their very being is founded on having a vision for the modern “binibini,” or the modern Filipina. Through the years, and as they’ve grown as young women themselves, they’ve never let go of that vision—in fact, it’s only become clearer.

“We always want to represent a modern Filipina who is informed and empowered,” Gwen reiterates. “We really put that to heart and we want to be good role models, not just for the youth, but for all generations.”

Seeing a Filipino girl group dominate the world just as BINI is doing with their music makes people feel proud in terms of cultural representation, but the fact that they’re doing it all while spreading messages of empowerment? Insurmountable levels of slay. Their convictions show through in their lyrics, in who they’ve chosen to collaborate with, in the way they organize and participate in community events and initiatives, and in how they talk to others and their fans, BLOOMs.

“Pero siguro mas lumaki lang yung knowledge namin about being a ‘binibini’ talaga,” Jhoanna adds. “Like in representing our culture, and showing that Filipinas can thrive anywhere.”

Though feminine, sparkly, and playful in their style, BINI’s not here to conform to stereotypes—they’re here to break them. For instance, Blink Twice subverts the notion of girls having to be the “pakipot” or the one that’s supposed to be pursued. Though in an era where men are getting even more misogynistic and disrespectful (it’s bare minimum for them to show that they care for and actually love someone), it’s not a secret that women are often shamed for showing their desires or making the first move.

“I think it’s time that we break the mindset that women should just be waiting for things to happen, diba,” Jhoanna asserts. “Lagi nalang may [notion] na pag babae ka, eto ka dapat. May power din naman tayo to go after what we want, in everything—in love, in our career. For us, we want young girls to embrace that fearlessly.”

The track, coupled with Belinda’s spicy verse, oozes confidence. It’s fun, flirty, and fabulous, and it sends a clear message that girls should be able to be all that and more without judgment—to shape their own destiny and pursue their desires freely.

“Wag kayo matakot gawin kung ano gusto niyo gawin sa buhay niyo,” Jhoanna declares. “Because that’s your own story!”

RIDING THE WAVE

Unafraid to write their own story and make their own rules, BINI acknowledges the impact they’ve had on the music scene and on this generation.

“Masaya na feeling na nagkakaroon kami ng malaking influence, especially sa youth,” Maloi shares. “‘Yun naman talaga yung goal namin—to influence, to empower young women like us, so masaya kami na through our music, nafe-feel nila yung gusto namin i-convey na message.”

The relationship BINI has with their BLOOMs is a close one, and they’ve never taken the support each one offers for granted. “Gusto namin isama sila sa ‘universe’ namin, and we’re just so happy na hanggang ngayon andito pa rin sila, andito pa rin kayo, na niyayakap kami,” Maloi says in gratitude. “Now that we’re going global, masaya kami na our foundations are strong, and sa mga darating pa na taon, sa mga darating pa na universe na tatahakin naming BINI, I hope na magsama-sama pa rin tayo.”

Six years into their journey as BINI, seeing their fans will always be a fulfilling moment for them—and seeing them grow in number and across nations even more so. Going on a world tour is a massive milestone for the girl group, and it’s another reminder of how much things have changed for eight young girls who got to where they are through hard work and a determination to chase their dreams against all odds.

“Not only do we get to perform and share our music, share who we are as BINI, but I think the beautiful part about [touring] is that we’re all together and we learn things together,” Aiah says. “We experience things together, and I think these moments are moments that we’ll always carry with us kahit matapos na yung tour. So we’re just gonna enjoy and make the most of the time that we have on tour.”

EMBRACING CHANGE

In a world of gatekeeping and wanting your idols to always stay the same so they can deliver what you know you love, being open to the inevitable changes and shifts that come with time—whether that’s music style or global growth—is a show of respect and love for artists that have given their all to always deliver. BINI’s journey has by no means been easy, nor did they achieve superstardom overnight, so it tracks that they welcome change and all the possibilities that come with it.

“Embrace change, because change is constant. I hope sa mga fans, not only BLOOMs, maging aware sila that these artists they idolize—they’re going to change. And these changes will be stepping stones para mag-grow yung mga artists they look up to,” Maloi states.

Growth requires change, but change might be daunting for all kinds of people. For instance, for those seeing a rare gem like BINI shine like they do, for fans who want them to stay the same BINI they’ve known (AKA gatekeepers), or for people unused to having their musical and cultural boundaries expanded (let’s face it, there’s still plenty of stigma around liking P-pop). But BINI’s not one to back down from a challenge, or to step away from pursuing what they want.

Change brought BINI to where they are today—shaped them into the global icons from right here in the Philippines that they are. Filipino music is being reintroduced to the world, and that’s a great marker of change. It not only benefits the artists leading the charge, but also highlights the talent and skill of our very own Filipino artists. One day people will get used to it, as Jhoanna says, and embrace change as something that can bring about something spectacular. “And sasabihin na lang natin na mabuti may nagsimula.”
