Anne Hathaway Is Lowkey Bringing Back Our Childhood In The Best Way Possible

Shut up!

It looks like it’s back to Genovia we go, and maybe the hallways of the Runway magazine office, too.

Anne Hathaway is a woman of many skills. She’s an actress, singer, mother (both in the literal and figurative sense), and much more. And the Oscar winner can also add a reviver of childhood nostalgia to the list if her upcoming projects are anything to go by.

Anne’s filmography is filled with some of the most iconic films in the 2000s that made our childhood, and she’s giving us what we want now that one of her classic movies is getting a long-awaited sequel and another might be on the way. All this to say, in an era when Hollywood is giving us unnecessary sequels, these are the exception and already have us lined up at the cinema.

THE PRINCESS DIARIES 3

Our childhood wouldn’t be the same without at least one viewing of The Princess Diaries 1 and/or 2. The movie franchise, which brought Anne Hathaway into stardom, followed Mia Thermopolis as she discovered that she was no regular teen but a princess of the fictional country of Genovia. As heir to the throne, she goes under the tutelage of her royal grandmother, played by the legendary Julie Andrews.

The 2001 original was a classic and was followed by an equally iconic sequel in 2004 that saw Mia travel to Genovia on her 21st birthday as she’s crowned queen without having to marry thanks to a moving speech she gave to parliament. For over two decades, it seemed that that would be it for Mia’s story, but we’ll be going back to Genovia soon as it was recently confirmed that Anne Hathaway would be returning for The Princess Diaries 3.

Plot details are sparse as of this writing, but we do know the movie begins filming in 2025. Bringing it to life is director Adele Lim, whose resume includes directing Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon. “As a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide,” she said in a statement

While there’s still no word if any of Mia’s love interests will reprise their roles for the third movie, all we need at least is for Julie Andrews to return, and Myra to give us a Miracles Happen moment in the OST.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2

The publishing world was never the same after this gem dropped in 2006. This rom-com follows Andy Sachs, a fresh journalism graduate, who finds herself in the high-pressure world of high-fashion publishing after she accepts the job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly, the notorious Editor-in-Chief of Runway magazine. Not only does she have an antagonistic boss, but Andy also faces competition from her difficult co-assistant Emily as well as friends and a partner who do not sympathize with Andy’s plight (Nate was truly a red flag).

The trio of Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Meryl Streep was unbeatable as The Devil Wears Prada quickly became a staple in the pop culture lexicon. The fact that the movie is still relevant, thanks to, among other things, its memorable scenes and legendary quotes, today proves how iconic it is. But if reports are to be believed, then gird your loins, we might soon be seeing what Andy Sachs has been up to after all these years.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Disney was developing a sequel with the first movie’s screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, in talks to write the next chapter. No news came from that development since, but things kicked into high gear when Production List, an official site that “monitors all major film and TV projects currently in pre-production and active development” listed The Devil Wears Prada 2 on its website to begin shooting this November. Not only that, the original trio along with Stanely Tucci, who played Runway’s art director Nigel in the first movie, were all set to return for the sequel.

As for the plot, it is rumored to center on Miranda facing a dilemma at the end of her career at a time when magazine publishing is not the business it used to be. Making matters worse, she must face her old assistant, Emily, now an executive at a luxury group, once more as she looks to secure needed advertising dollars from her company. There has yet to be any official word if the sequel actually exists, so take this info with a grain of salt, but we have our fingers crossed.

If both these movies become a reality, expect cinemas to be packed, and we’d be there on opening night wearing our cerulean belts. It also feels correct to see two of Anne Hathaway’s most iconic movies get a sequel near to each other. She really will always be that girl.
