Star Cinema has produced some of the most iconic Filipino movies of the last few decades. Meanwhile, the streaming service and mobile app Kumu has been the go-to place for both regular people and the stars of ABS-CBN to do live streams. So what happens when the two combine forces to make a movie? We’re about to see how that looks after Star Cinema and Kumu announced their first joint movie project, Love At First Stream. No trailer has been released yet, but based on the initial details we know, Love At First Stream is shaping up to be a unique and interesting movie experience.

THE PLOT
Love At First Stream is set in a world where life has become wildly digital. It will center on four people: a streamer, a student, a breadwinner, and a heartthrob. The movie will see each of these characters explore love and friendships online to escape their realities offline. Given this, it’s not hard to imagine the movie’s themes revolve around love, family, and maybe even social media.
THE CAST
Cathy Garcia-Molina, who you may know from directing modern classics like Hello, Love, Goodbye, The Hows of Us, She’s Dating the Gangster, and Four Sisters and a Wedding, among many others, is set to direct Love At First Stream. The movie will star Kaori Oinuma, Rhys Miguel, Danieal Stranner, and Anthony Jennings who are all from the talent management arm, Rise Artists Studio. You may know Kaori and Rhys from their stint on PBB Otso and as Michiko and Tob respectively in He’s Into Her. Daniela Stranner, and Anthony Jennings, meanwhile, are relatively new faces and this is their first leading movie role.
Daniela previously worked with Direk Cathy on Make It With You. In the movie, she plays V, a street smart go-getter who dreams big, finding her own way through streaming in the platform, Kumu. Anthony also worked with Cathy Garcia-Molina in Hello, Love, Goodbye where he played Eric, the younger brother of Alden Richards’ character. In Love At First Stream, he will play the role of Christopher, a very simple guy with a charming personality who will work hard to help out his family.
Kaori Oinuma is set to play the role of Megumi, the naturally sweet and kind girl who is an outstanding student and running for Magna Cum Laude. Rhys Miguel will play the role of Gino, a smart and popular guy who does everything to make his family proud, but wants to escape.
AN INTERACTIVE ELEMENT TO LOVE AT FIRST STREAM
Kumu’s involvement in the project isn’t just seen in the streaming element of the movie. Love At First Stream features an interactive element where the audience can participate. According to Paolo Pineda, senior vice president for business development at Kumu, if you want to participate in the movie, all you have to do is have a Kumu account. “We found a way to make Kumu users part of it, not necessarily the big stars, but they can star in the movie. They can sing the song for the movie and few more things.” This is something Cathy Garcia-Molina touched upon during the cast announcement saying that the movie will be made with the help of the audience. “The audience will be very much a part of it as we are,” she says in the launch. More details are set to be released within the coming months.
Love At First Stream is set to be released later in 2021.
