Ever since they made their debut in February 2021, Alamat has occupied a unique lane not just in the world of P-pop, but OPM in general. Their concept of combining different cultures of the Philippines for a uniquely local experience is enough to get people’s attention. But what’s interesting about the group is that they won’t be pigeonholed to just one style or concept. They can do pop like ABKD and kasmala, as well as ballads like Sa Panaginip Na Lang. And for the opening of arguably their biggest chapter yet, Alamat treats us to their take on R&B with the song Say U Love Me. It’s a great track and one that showcases how Alamat can slay any concept or genre thrown at them.
WHY WON’T YOU SAY U LOVE ME
Produced by WAYBTTER, Say U Love Me sees Alamat delve into the R&B genre with a song about love. But the group isn’t head over heals over a woman. Instead, they are questioning whether or not that person still loves them and realizes that their relationship is going nowhere. The smooth R&B production complements the ease of vocals and raps from the group. It’s a sensual song with a sultry vibe that’s easy to get into, and is arguably some of the most mature music Alamat has dropped yet, but it suits them well. It also showcases how the variety in Alamat’s discography is some of the best in all of P-pop.
WHY WON’T YOU SAY YOU NEED ME
And with a quality song, you also get a quality music video. Directed by veteran filmmaker and frequent Alamat collaborator Jason Paul Laxamana, the music video sees the boys express their heartbreak in a variety of sets. First, we have the workshop set with the boys fresh from their shift ready to bust a move. Then, there is their all black looks, described as Pintado Glam Punk, which is there best look of the whole MV. And finally, there’s the party scene.
Matching the smooth vibe of the track, the music video has the boys get sultry and seductive with choreography that leaves little to the imagination. They all look good, but their black fits really do hit different and is low-key some of their best fits to date. The heartbreak aspect is also present as throughout the mv, we see the members spend time with a mannequin who represents the cold hearted love interest the song is about. It’s a quality release with the visuals and production giving justice to the song.
Over a year into their careers and Alamat is still getting better and better. As the first single off their debut mini-album dropping later this year, Say U Love Me is a great start to the era. And as we inch closer to the major milestone of their first EP, we’re reminded once more why the six member group is a top tier P-pop group.
