October 2024 promises to deliver four weeks of new films and series that range from drama, action, comedy, anime, and, yes, horror. Having nothing to watch this month won’t be an issue if we do say so ourselves. So, scroll down for a selection of the new movies and shows worth watching this October 2024.

JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX

The sequel to the much-talked-about 2018 film finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love in the form of Lee but also finds the music that’s always been inside him. How will all of this unfold? See it for yourself as it’s currently showing in cinemas nationwide.

THE PLATFORM 2

Remember that Spanish horror movie we all watched on Netflix during quarantine? Yeah, it now has a sequel. After a mysterious leader imposes his law in a brutal system of vertical cells, a new arrival battles against a dubious food distribution method akin to the first movie. You can stream The Platform 2 on Netflix.

THE WILD ROBOT

DreamWorks Animation’s most acclaimed movie yet and it’s not a sequel? Oh, we never thought we’d see the day. This adaption of Peter Brown’s award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller follows the journey of a robot – ROZZUM unit 7134, “Roz” for short – that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling. You can catch this in local cinemas beginning October 9.

MUJIGAE

Alexa Ilacad makes her big screen comeback in this Filipino and South Korean tale. After losing her Filipino mother in South Korea, 5-year-old Mujigae, half-Korean, half-Filipino, finds herself in the care of her estranged Aunt Sunny (Ilacad) in the Philippines. As they navigate this unexpected journey, they confront grief, unravel cultural complexities, and discover the transformative power of family and community. Through their poignant exploration, Mujigae learns to embrace change through courage and resilience, finding her place in the world with a strong chance at life. It screens in cinemas nationwide on October 9.

TOMB RAIDER: THE LEGEND OF LARA CROFT

Lara Croft gets the animated treatment in this series set after the events of the 2010s trilogy of video games that served as a reboot of sorts for the famous, well, tomb raider. Thrust into a high-stakes chase around the world, fearless adventurer Lara Croft confronts her traumatic past while unraveling an ancient mystery. The show makes its debut on Netflix on October 10.

DRAGON BALL DAIMA

An all-new episodic series from the Dragon Ball franchise created by Akira Toriyama is coming this month. The show centers on Goku and his friends being turned small due to a conspiracy. What sort of adventure awaits Goku, Supreme Kai, and the new characters Glorio and Panzy in this unknown world, the Demon Realm? Find out when the show streams on Crunchyroll (and that includes the Philippines) starting October 11.

SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY

Before David Corenswet becomes the newest actor to play Superman in 2025, revisit the man who first brought the legendary comic book hero to life in this documentary. The story of Christopher Reeve is an astonishing rise from an unknown actor to an iconic movie star. Reeve portrayed the Man of Steel in four Superman films and played dozens of other roles that displayed his talent and range as an actor, before being injured in a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

After becoming a quadriplegic, he became a charismatic leader and activist in the quest to find a cure for spinal cord injuries, as well as a passionate advocate for disability rights and care – all while continuing his career in cinema in front of and behind the camera and dedicating himself to his beloved family. This film includes never-before-seen intimate home movies and an extraordinary trove of personal archive material, as well as the first extended interviews ever filmed with Reeve’s three children about their father, and interviews with the A-list Hollywood actors who were Reeve’s colleagues and friends. You can watch it in local cinemas this October 16.

SMILE 2

If we had a peso for every time a horror movie featuring a female pop star was released in 2024, we’d have two, which isn’t a lot, but it’s more than we expected. The sequel to the hit horror flick of 2022 is here to up the ante. It centers on global pop sensation Skye Riley, played by Naomi Scott, who begins to experience increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events, just as she’s about to embark on a new world tour.

Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control. You can smile your way to cinemas nationwide when the movie, in its full uncut R-18 glory, drops this October 16 in cinemas, just in time for Halloween.

BALOTA

After making a splash at Cinemalaya earlier this year, Balota is finally making its nationwide cinema debut, and just in time for COC fillings for the 2025 midterm elections. The story centers on a land-grabbing tycoon and a former male sexy actor who are locked in a tight race for mayor of a small town. On election day, the results are extremely close, causing violence to erupt in the town. This causes Emmy, a teacher who serves in the election, to hide in the wilderness with a ballot box that holds the last copy of the election results. It screens in theaters beginning October 16.

OUTSIDE

Did somebody say Filipino zombie psychological horror movie? Netflix Philippines’ first zombie flick follows a family of four led by its unstable patriarch, Francis (Sid Lucero). Together with his wife Iris (Beauty Gonzales) and sons Josh (Marco Masa) and Lucas (Aiden Tyler Patdu), they flee to Francis’s secluded and abandoned farmhouse in the province to seek refuge and restore some semblance of normalcy. But what is supposed to be a haven turns out to be something worse as they unearth an old secret that becomes a greater threat. You can add this to your Halloween watchlist when it streams exclusively on Netflix starting October 17.

SEVENTEEN TOUR FOLLOW AGAIN

No need to wait for SEVENTEEN’s Bulacan shows next year when you can watch it in the comfort of your own home. Filmed at Seoul’s World Cup Stadium, this concert film features all 13 members as they premiere their hit song MAESTRO, as well as unique unit performances of Spell, LALALI, and Cheers to youth. Filmed from multiple angles during a breathtaking sunset to nighttime show, Carats will be able to relive the magic of that unforgettable evening time and time again starting October 17 on Disney+.

WOMAN OF THE HOUR

This based-on-a-true-story film, which stars Anna Kendrick and also serves as her directorial debut, is even more proof that life can be stranger than fiction. It’s set in 1978 and follows a young aspiring actress named Cheryl Bradshaw who competes in the dating television show The Dating Game and wins a date with charming bachelor Rodney Alcala. The only problem? He’s a serial killer. It streams on Netflix this October 18.

VENOM: THE LAST DANCE

It’s time for the final act. In Venom: The Last Dance, Tom Hardy returns as Venom as Eddie and Venom are on the run following the events of their scene-stealing cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo is forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie’s last dance. It screens in local cinemas nationwide this October 23.

FRIENDLY FIRE

Here’s to more Filipino movies about Filipino esports players. Friendly Fire stars Loisa Andalio as Hazel Sales, a female amateur gamer who plays the shooter game Project: Xandata and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Discovered and recruited by Sonya Wilson (Coleen Garcia), Hazel soon joins Sonya’s professional esports team dubbed Team Isla.

At first, Hazel finds it hard to adjust to the rigorous training and the dynamics of the team. Further complications arise when the team’s two lead players – Ryan and Yves are at odds with Hazel after doubting her ability to play Xandata. See Mikhail Red’s take on the esports scene when the movie screens in cinemas starting October 23.
