Markus Paterson is known for quite a few things these days. He’s the boyfriend of Janella Salvador. Markus is the father of her baby. He’s a young actor and singer. He’s also part of this quarter’s covers for NYLON Manila. But all these headlines can get people to think of Markus as just one thing and stereotype him as such. But the truth is that he is a multi-faceted individual who is more than just what people perceive him to be. With that being said, here are 9 things you should know about Markus Paterson.

He was born in the United Kingdom
Markus Paterson was born Mark Paul Robert Paterson in Bath, UK on June 3, 1998. He is half Filipino and half British. His father is former British Air Force pilot George Trevor Paterson, and his mother is Pangasinan-based entrepreneur Norma Mario Paterson.
He first moved to the Philippines when he was 9
In 2007, Markus Paterson moved to Manila and enrolled in the fifth grade at Reedley International School. This was the time when Markus started learning how to speak Tagalog. When asked about his time in Manila as a young boy, he describes it as such, “So she [his mom] sent me here when I was like 9 or 10 to spend a couple of years in grade school just to see what it was like. And then I had a great time, met some good friends whom I’m still friends with now. It was good because that was when I kind of picked up my Tagalog because I was living with my cousins in Cainta and they really couldn’t speak English.” But it wasn’t long before Markus was sent back to England, where he stayed until 2016.
He’s talented in football
These days, Markus Paterson is mostly known as a singer, actor, boyfriend of Janella Salvador, and young father, but he is also a football player. Marcus started playing football when he was six years old and has said that his football idol is Cristiano Ronaldo. He considers football as one of the main things that make him happy in life. In fact, he’s so good in the sport that he was a professional football player in England and played football professionally for Kaya FC Elite in the UFL when he moved back to the Philippines in 2016.
He went to Enderun Colleges
After spending his early teens in the UK, Markus Paterson moved back to Manila when he was around 17 years old. He enrolled at Enderun where he took up Hospitality Management. At the time he was in college, Markus was also playing professionally for the Kaya F.C. Elite and starting to dabble in showbiz through modeling and hosting gigs.
He got his start in the industry as a model and host
Markus’s entertainment career began when he was scouted by a manager. He first started out as a fashion model and host. He describes his entry into showbiz as something he didn’t really plan on doing “I moved here [the Philippines] to study actually and play football and I was studying at Enderun Colleges and then I don’t know, showbiz just kind of happened.” One of his first hosting jobs was a VJ for MTV Philippines and on programs like MTV Philippines Fuel, a show that talked about the latest topics in music, fashion, and pop culture. At this time, he was also hosting ASAP Chillout. It wouldn’t be long though until Markus hit his big break.
He auditioned for Pinoy Boyband Superstar
Markus Paterson’s first claim to fame was auditioning for Pinoy Boyband Superstar. He sang Tadhana by UDD and passed the audition round, though he only made it the top 12 live round. On the show, he was dubbed as the “romantic athlete ng UK”. Markus explained at the time that it was his mom who pushed him to pursue his passions in performing. At the time, he was just 18 years old. His music career hasn’t stopped though as he is currently signed with Tarsier Records and has released a few singles.
He has a few acting credits to his name
Markus Paterson has only been acting since 2017, but he has already racked up a few acting credits to his name. His first acting role was in the teleserye La Luna Sangre where he played Robin. He has also been featured in Sana Dalawa ang Puso as well as a couple of episodes of Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK). His first movie role was in Ang Babaeng Allergic sa WiFi where he played Leo, Sue Ramirez’s boyfriend in the movie. He also appeared in Mikhail Red’s Dead Kids in the role of Chuck Santos. His latest upcoming project is the TV series Viral which is set to be aired sometime later this year.
In the past, Markus has said that acting is not something he naturally gravitates towards but is learning to like it. “I did theater acting in England when I was young. I played the lead in Hairspray. It was the worst experience of my life. I hated it. That’s why I hated acting so much when I was younger. But now it’s growing on me,”
His relationship with Janella Salvador was kept secret for nearly 2 years
Markus Paterson and Janella Salvador started dating around the beginning of 2019, but both of them never publicly admitted that they were dating. The relationship finally became public on September 12, 2020, 1 year and 8 months after they started dating when Markus posted a video of him and Janella on Instagram dancing close together and sharing a kiss. In an interview he did with friend and fellow actor Kyle Echarri on his YouTube channel last year, Markus explained that he expected the bashing to happen, but wish people would stop because he truly loved Janella. I’ve never felt the love that she makes me feel. There is no one or nothing that could make me look at another woman the way I look at her. Like it’s not even fair to my family how much I’m in love with this woman because I would put her above anything else.”
He is close friends with Kyle Echarri
Speaking of Kyle Echarri, he and Markus Paterson are close friends. In that same interview, Kyle explained that he and Markus go way back and first met each other during Tagalog class for Star Magic. At the time, Kyle said that Markus was already good at the language and was very white, so he didn’t know why he was there. The both of them ended up forming a friendship along with Darren Espanto. Later on, Kyle said that Markus “emotionally attached” himself to a person who was becoming distant from Kyle and Darren which caused friction between his and Markus’ friendship. The two eventually patched things up after Markus said sorry and they have been good friends ever since.
