Whenever my friends ask me for fashion recommendations to add to their closet, I’m always going to vouch for a good pair of boots. While some might think that boots are too intimidating or hard to pull off, I say don’t knock it until you try it. They’re such a good staple piece, and dare I say one of the easiest additions to take any outfit to the next level. The only problem? It’s so hard to choose what pair to get. If you’re getting your first pair of boots, the pressure of deciding the right pair weighs heavy. I mean, there’s already so many styles to choose from! Speaking from personal experience, it’s overwhelming.
But if you’re currently in this position, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. Here are some of our tips and tricks to consider in making the choosing of your first pair a little easier.
THINK ABOUT YOUR AESTHETIC
With the vast amount of designs, it is important to figure out what suits your personal style best. If you’re anything like me, I gravitate towards Western fashion (I love a good pair of denim jeans). With that in mind, it made sense for me to look into Cowboy Boots. I can confidently say that this was the best choice for me.
I find that a good way to figure out what style might compliment your wardrobe is to observe your outfit pegs. If you’ve got a Pinterest board filled with your dream ‘fits (hey twin), look at the common themes. Do a lot of your dream ‘fits have mini skirts? Maybe consider a pair that are knee-length to compliment the proportions. If you want to look at the bigger picture, think of an aesthetic you want to follow. Love anything Y2K/Bratz? Consider something like a chunky heel, a staple of the era and doll line.
Another thing that is important to think about is whether you want a certain kind of boot because it’s trendy. While I love having a pulse on what people are loving, it’s easy to get caught up in what’s new. If you can’t see yourself wearing it in a few years (or months even), don’t let the hype get to you and think about something you do know you can wear with your usual looks.
LIFESTYLE IS EVERYTHING
Okay, you’ve figured out what you like style-wise, now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty. Another important thing to consider is your lifestyle. Finding a pair that you can wear with your everyday outfits is great, but making sure that they are easy to live with is necessary. If you’re someone who walks/commutes a ton, find a pair that can accommodate that. If you’re like me, you’re on the move and walking all the time. Knowing this, I probably would not get boots with super high heels or that are a pain to walk in as my first pair.
While it’s not a crime to not always wear a certain item, it’s always good to get your money’s worth and to get pieces you know you’ll get use out of.
INVEST IN YOUR INTEREST
Speaking from personal experience, it is so important to invest in a good pair of boots.
I remember when I bought my first pair of boots, I was so excited because I had gotten them at a super cheap price. Reality hit me like Regina George getting hit by that bus though as they fell apart while I was leaving one of my classes. While embarrassing, it taught me an important lesson: invest in your interest.
Let’s face it, as we live in a world where fast fashion brands churn out new pieces constantly, it means that quality is sacrificed. While it is tempting to go on and buy the cheapest pair you can find online, saving up and investing in a truly good pair makes for a better purchase (although, you can definitely save a bit of money by going thrifting). Being able to own a pair of boots made with quality material ensures that there are less chances for fashion disasters to happen. Plus, it’s less wasteful as you don’t end up getting rid of something once it starts to deteriorate.
Overall, buying your first pair of boots doesn’t have to feel like an overwhelming experience. With these tips, it might end up becoming a walk in the park!
