Pop lovers, it’s time to add a new artist to your stan list. J-pop girl group f5ve (pronounced fi-vee) is on its way to becoming the internet’s latest music darling. You may recognize the group, as they were formerly known as SG5, but they are making waves through their unique music, eye-catching visuals, and iconic behavior. Fun fact, when the group first came onto the scene, they initially had an aesthetic and visual style based on Sailor Moon, and you know what, work. Consisting of members Kaede, Sayaka, Ruri, Miyuu, and Rui, these ladies are described as “inter-dimensional dream agents from Tokyo, Japan.” What a serve.
The group dropped their newest single, Magic Clock, off their highly anticipated first album, SEQUENCE 01, coming out on May 5, 2025. With a couple of months before the album drops, it gives everyone enough time to become a member of the hi-5 fandom. If you’ve been looking for another girl group to stan, here’s why f5ve should be just that.
THEIR MUSIC IS EVERYTHING
f5ve’s sound is unique, as they’ve set out to make J-pop available to an international audience. Mixing genres such as J-pop and Hyperpop give these girls their musical edge. They’re making that happen with executive producer BloodPop®, who has worked with some of our fave artists such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Jungkook, and more! They’ve also collaborated with A.G. Cook, who many might know through his work with Brat Summer architect Charli xcx.
They came onto the scene with Firetruck in 2023 during their SG5 era. When they rebranded in 2024, they debuted with Lettuce, a track all about knowing your worth in a relationship and not tolerating toxicity. They followed up with hit Underground, a song all about wanting to escape the pressures of everyday life (which is so relatable, TBH). They then dropped UFO, a track all about being so good people think you’re otherworldly. They’re clearly showing us range with their drops, and it also shows with their newest single, Magic Clock.
With how much they’re giving us, we know that new listeners will find a song from their discography that they will definitely eat up.
THEIR CONCEPTS & VISUALS KEEP ON GIVING
Concepts and visuals are some of the most exciting things artists can give us. They add to the listening experience, as they can transport us to a whole new world. For f5ve, they are constantly giving us music videos and looks that just keep getting better and better. For the songs they’ve dropped so far, they’ve given us totally different vibes for each of them. From slaying in a grocery filled with lettuce to becoming aliens, they’re unafraid to take on any concept, and we love that for them.
THEY ARE J-POP VETERANS
While f5ve may be relatively new to the scene, the members aren’t. Kaede, Sayaka, Ruri, and Miyuu were members of the groups Happiness and E-Girls. For Rui, she’s also a member of the group iScream. These girls are the definition of booked and busy! Many pop stars are revered for the fact that they’ve been working hard for years, and f5ve should be a part of that conversation, too. Their years of experience show through their performances and music, and they continue to slay the game.
THESE DIVAS ARE SILLY
F5ve and anyone chronically online is a match made in heaven. Their social media accounts are filled with the girls being absolutely unserious, and we’re obsessed. From referencing memes like the hyperpigmentation drawing to giving us POV videos where they give us a dental exam, we know the social media intern is working overtime (or maybe even the girls themselves). They’ve also collaborated with some of the internet’s favorite personalities, such as twaimz and the iconic Nishiyama Daddy. Someone call a nurse ‘cause they’ve given us IJBOLitis.
THEY’RE HERE TO CHANGE THE WORLD
The mission of these inter-dimensional dream agents is a specific one. They plan to create a world where fear does not exist through their music. While this is a big ask, their artistry proves they’re hungry for success. Each of the members is assigned a dream specialty in the group. Kaede represents confidence, Sayaka is brilliance, Ruri is empowerment, Miyuu is fantasy, and Rui is joy. With these specialties combined, they’re ready to conquer the music landscape, and we’re more than ready to see what they have in store.
