While TikTok has sadly been used at times as a platform to spread misinformation, it can also be a tool for people to be seen and heard by a wider audience that they normally wouldn’t have access to. The barrier to entry has been lowered in terms of how people share their art and talent with the world. All you need is a phone, a talent to share, some creativity, and you can get yourself a viral hit on the platform.
Such is the case for young and aspiring filmmakers who are looking for a platform to share their movies, and no, we aren’t talking about people who post movies in parts. Gone are the days when creatives might need expensive equipment or an extensive crew to make a movie as people can just post their works on TikTok. You’ve probably come across a short film once or a few times on your FYP. And TikTok and Viva are looking to further champion creators on the platform with a film festival that not only could get you as much as 60,000 pesos but also a professionally produced film. And that’s all because you made a TikTok video.
TO THE CINEMA FYP
Short films have been some of the key ways young and aspiring creatives make their way into the industry. Some of the biggest and hottest directors got their start by making short films before they hit the big leagues. And that’s a talent #ForYouPelikula is wanting to celebrate. A partnership with TikTok and Viva, #ForYouPelikula is an initiative aimed at nurturing the Philippine short film industry and providing emerging filmmakers and passionate storytellers with a unique platform to shine.
The TikTok and Viva #ForYouPelikula Short Film Festival emphasizes the creation of engaging content that resonates. Emerging and promising Filipino storytellers, creators, and artists are all invited to craft compelling and inspiring narratives, connect with a broader audience, gain mainstream recognition, and contribute to the reshaping of the local short film industry.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
If you want your genius to be seen by the world, this is how you can join. First and foremost, craft your short film entry. It must be between 1-3 minutes long, using the hashtag #ForYouPelikula. You have the creative liberty to explore various formats: from skits and reenactments to narrations or even showing the entire short film. It is important, though, that all entries should seamlessly align with TikTok’s community guidelines and feature the #ForYouPelikula hashtag in the captions.
Second, the video must be posted between October 2-22. Note though that you should be based in the Philippines and should be at least 18 years old to participate. You should also be the owner of the TikTok account where the video entries will be uploaded. Lastly, you are free to submit multiple entries; however, only one entry from each participant can qualify as a finalist.
AWARDS NIGHT
If you manage to make it as a finalist, here’s what’s in store for you. A distinguished panel of judges, hailing from TikTok and media partners, will sift through the entries. The top 5 finalists will be announced on October 25 and not only will the finalists be given a cash prize of P10,000 each, but they will also have their creations transformed into professionally produced short films from October 25 – November 25, 2023 courtesy of TikTok and Viva. And yes, that includes professional actors playing the roles of the characters in these films.
The final short films will then be premiered at the TikTok and Viva #ForYouPelikula Awards Night on November 28, 2023, at the Venice Cineplex Cinema 5, and on TikTok. The Best Entry Award, chosen from the top 5 original videos submitted, and the Best Short Film Award, chosen from the Viva-produced films, will be announced during the Awards Night, with each winner receiving a cool P50,000 cash prize. And just like that, your TikTok video got you a cash prize, a film, and maybe even a movie career. So, go get filming.
