THE (ISLAND) BOYZ.

IDK, we have a feeling that THE BOYZ’s called it PHANTASY because most of it was shot in the Philippines.

THE BOYZ is no stranger to the Philippines. The K-pop boy group has been to the country a few times, either as part of a bigger event or solo shows for their Filipino Deobi. But their return to the country last July proved to be their most exciting yet. Not only did they have their biggest solo concert in the Philippines so far at the Araneta Coliseum as part of their ZENERATION world tour, but the boys also got those extra Filipino experiences.

Among the Filipino-coded moments THE BOYZ experienced included Eric and Sunwoo wading through the Manila streets during heavy rain. And in particular, the group found time in between their busy schedules to check out Siargao, the surfing mecca in Surigao del Norte. But they weren’t there just to get the sun and surf but filmed nearly everything about their latest comeback. Come through THE BOYZ in their PH tourism ambassadors era.

THEY WANT TO TASTE YOUR LIP GLOSS

Back in July, Filipino deobi got their detective hats on when photos and videos of THE BOYZ in Siargao started circulating on social media. And now, we know why as the group filmed the music video of their comeback single, LIP GLOSS, on the island. While it isn’t stated in the credits that it was filmed in Siargao, the opening moments of the mv give it away with lush shots of nature and the famed surfing beaches. LIP GLOSS is a fun and vibrant love song fit for the summertime, so it wasn’t that much of a surprise that THE BOYZ filmed the mv on the island to match its vibe.

Split into two parts, the six-minute music video finds the members catching some waves on the beach before they catch feelings for a white girl. Now, while would have appreciated it if they casted Filipino talent to play the main love interest, a white girl in Siargao does make sense. The rest of the first half of the video sees the members try to impress the girl all while showcasing different spots in Siargao. And just to make sure the audience knew that the setting was in the Philippines, THE BOYZ danced on a basketball court.

By the end, the girl rejects Younghoon’s rizz, but he and the rest of the members make up for it when a group of girls talks to them at a party, thus beginning the second half, which felt more like a performance video.

THE BOYZ IN SIARGAO

Aside from the music video, THE BOYZ also shot the album jacket, photocards, and more for their latest EP, Phantasy Pt. 1: Christmas In August. And yes, that is the name of the 6-track album, so it really is no wonder they shot it in a country that celebrates Christmas as early as September. Locations we spotted in LIP GLOSS’s music video and their concept photos include Tigsao, Pacifico, Burgos, Maasin River, General Luna, and Zicaleta.

It’s nice to see that they made the most of their Philippine trip, which was their second of 2023. They got to perform for their Pinoy fans and shoot an entire era in Siargao, the first K-pop group to ever do so. Here’s to more K-pop acts using the beauty of the Philippines as the setting of their projects.
