ICYMI, the 2024 awards season has come and gone with the recent conclusion of the 2024 Oscars. As the biggest awards show of the year, the Oscars is deemed the pinnacle of cinematic excellence as a new set of nominees are given the famous golden statuette. And this year, a banner 12 months in cinema was celebrated front and center as many names, both first-timers and veterans, walked away with a trophy.

Most notably, the biggest night in cinema saw Oppenheimer walk away with the heaviest bag at seven wins, including the grand prize of Best Picture. But despite all its pomp and circumstance, the 96th Academy Awards also gave us those fun, wild, unexpected, and cheer-worthy moments. So, scroll down for those moments that made the 2024 Oscars what it was.

MESSI THE DOG

Anatomy of a Fall star and overall great actor Messi the dog low-key stole the show with his appearance at the Oscars. And to think, there was a chance the 7-year-old border collie wouldn’t be able to attend the ceremony. He ate with that bowtie.

ARIANA GRANDE FANGIRLING OVER MICHELLE YEOH

Queens supporting queens. Ariana was all of us if we were to meet Michelle Yeoh. The fact that she did it in the middle of an interview made it even better.

THE GODZILLA MINUS ONE TEAM

Not only did Godzilla Minus One win an Oscar for Visual Effects, but the team behind the film also deserved a trophy with the energy they brought to the show. Their mini Godzilla figures and Godzilla-themed shoes prove how much love they have for the legendary kaiju.

EMMA STONE BEING EMMA STONE

From winning her second Oscar, talking about her broken dress, having a bestie moment with Jennifer Lawrence, and general fangirling, it’s safe to say that Emma Stone had a great night.

SUPPORT FOR PALESTINE

The 2024 Oscars wasn’t just a celebration of cinema, but also a reminder and platform to talk about what is going on in the world. Notably, quite a few celebrities wore a red pin from Artists4Ceasfire that symbolized a call for an end to the genocide in Palestine, with other guests wearing a pin of the Palestine flag.

Also, in one of the most poignant moments of the show, Jonathan Glazer, the writer and director of The Zone of Interest, used his speech for winning Best International Picture to talk about what’s going on in the Middle East. “Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people,” he said. It’s admirable to see celebrities and creatives use their platform to speak up for what is right.

OPPENHEIMER’S WINS

Oppenheimer being the most-awarded movie of the 2024 Oscars makes sense in our fantasy. But believe it or not, the show marked Robert Downey Jr. Cillian Murphy, and Christopher Nolan’s first Oscar wins of their careers. All we can say is deserve!

GIVING PROPS TO BEHIND-THE-SCENES WORKERS

If last year’s Hollywood strikes have taught us anything, it’s that the people who make a movie, both in front and behind the camera, matter. This is why it was fitting seeing host Jimmy Kimmel give the workers behind the camera their moment in the spotlight as well as the stunt community getting its own segment during the show. Now, all we need is the Best Stunts Oscar @theacademy.

I’M JUST KEN PERFORMANCE

While Barbie did not leave as the big winner of the night, they did slay in the music department. There was the moving performance of What Was I Made For?, which won Billie Eilish and Finneas their second (!) Oscar. But the highlight for many was Ryan Gosling’s I’m Just Ken performance. The Kenergy was on an 11 as he, dozens of dancers, and Slash brought down the house in a rousing number. That was more than Kenough.

THE CHANGED FORMAT FOR PRESENTING ACTING OSCARS

The Academy was cooking when they brought back the format for presenting acting category Oscars with five past winners introducing the current five nominees. It was last seen during the 2009 ceremony, and it’s something they need to continue to do moving forward. It made for heartwarming scenes between fellow actors and built a sense of camaraderie.

ARIANA GRANDE AND BILLIE ELISH TRYING TO NOT INTERRUPT SOMEONE

We’ve all had those moments where we awkwardly try not to interrupt someone being filmed. Even A-list celebs go through it, like Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish, who were spotted by the camera trying to shimmy their way out of frame during a speech. Same, TBH.
