Contributing to the storied history of love letters to their little ones, Markus Paterson captures his feelings unsaid in the song, Every Day, a heartfelt 90s boyband breather just in time for father’s day.
Listening to first-time parents talk about the kind of love they didn’t realize was humanly possible is nothing short of heartwarming. Just by the mere sight of their babies scrunching up their face or humming in their sleep, that twinkle in the eye and smile that grows into a grin is unmistakable. At that precious moment, no one else exists and nothing matters, just a mother and father and their little bundle of joy. Where some become softies, others become poets, writing verses of love and care that knows no bounds, usually transposed to song right around mother’s or father’s day. Often a poignant account of their experience, coddled in the warm embrace of love and care, these tributes reveal people at their most vulnerable.
Over the years, many singers have taken inspiration by their sons and daughters, charging their melodies and lyrics with enduring passion and purpose to last them more than a lifetime. From the timeless classics such as Beautiful Boy by John Lennon, To Zion by Lauryn Hill, and Isn’t She Lovely by Stevie Wonder, or more contemporary fare like Blue by Beyoncé, No Place by Backstreet Boys, and Someday (I Will Understand) by Britney Spears, these songs capture the intricacies of parenthood and family. When the world comes together to celebrate the figures and foundations of our lives, in this specific case, father’s day, each unique song becomes extra hear-tugging, often even extending its meaning far beyond the physical limits of time.
“I actually have a song coming out, dedicated to my son and my best bud’s daughter, called Every Day,” shares Markus Paterson in our conversation, thereby joining the ranks of many of the greats before singing about a love they never quite knew before.
Everyday, Love Unlike Ever Before
“Tired eyes see the wonder inside, when your voice shines a light on me,” croons Markus Paterson in the track produced by constant collaborator, Moophs. Easy on the ears, much like a 90s boyband ballad wedged in between a pristine, high-octane album to serve as an exhale, Every Day is a breath of fresh air that is comforting at every progression. Ahead of father’s day, the song continues to unravel the journey of being a dad, seeing the world through another’s eyes. Written earnestly and with a respect for the unbridled emotions, it compels you to honor those feelings whether you’re a parent or a child. “To watch you grow and teach you all the things in ever learned,” it continues, swelling with intent and inspiration as the seconds tick by.
Motivated unlike every before, this creative release speaks a lot of where Markus Paterson is at right now. First and foremost, he is now Papa to Jude Trevor, where his everyday is about his son. A nod to his journey so far, navigating the wonders of being a parent (together with Janella Salvador, of course), this more than just a song from fathers to their little ones—it’s his love letter to his son, from father’s day and beyond.
