What would you consider a famous piece of art? You may have thought of the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci or The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. If you asked that question to anyone who has been on TikTok these past few weeks, they’d probably bring up that viral portrait a girl drew of her mother.
For context: In a video uploaded by Sonia Tiebi in 2019, she asks her daughter to show her the portrait she’s been posing 10 minutes for. Hesitantly, she turns her sketchbook around to show the final piece. The result? A simple sketch that any kid could have come up with, but the part that’s been putting social media in shambles is the circles on the cheeks of the drawing. The circles (probably meant to be some sort of blush) had Sonia asking her daughter the now iconic question, “Is that hyperpigmentation?”.
The video in itself is a work of art. Beyond the sketch, so many things in the clip are hilarious. Sonia’s attempts at supporting her daughter while trying to hide her laughter is a masterclass in good parenting. On the other hand, her husband is just losing it and IJBOLing in the corner (which Sonia tells her daughter that it’s how the French say ‘it’s a great drawing’).
With how funny this video is, it is no wonder it has been making the rounds years later, especially this year as one of 2025’s first big memes. Adding to the meme’s lore, the family recently recreated the video, with the original drawing now framed because of course it should be.
