Ten years can fly by so quick. But there’s nothing like looking back at the media that we’ve watched and realizing how much time has passed by since they were released. It makes us feel older and nostalgic, for better or for worse. The year 2014 was a year of romance, iconic loveteams in their breakout roles—with some couples that are, as of 2024, no more—and now-classic movies and teleseryes. And yes, some of them may feel dated now, but others also remain timeless while still keeping that distinct 2010s charm.
From movies to television series, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most impactful media that are turning ten years old this year. Some of them catapulted their stars to fame, and some of them became people’s favorite things to watch whenever, wherever. Check them out below.
DIARY NG PANGET
The pioneer of the Wattpad-book-turned-movie genre, Diary ng Panget, stars Nadine Lustre and James Reid in their breakout film roles and first pairing together as a loveteam. The film, riddled with rom-com cliches that the people often crave and a mini Cinderella story, follows the sweet Eya (Lustre) as she works as a personal maid to the egoistic Cross (Reid) and the evolution of their relationship. And yes, this also means that the now-classic Nadine Lustre track Paligoy-ligoy is turning 10 this year. You can watch the film in full for free here.
SHE’S DATING THE GANGSTER
Bad boy and good girl pairing, fake-dating-turned-real-romance trope, and a long-lost love? Check, check, and check. She’s Dating The Gangster, starring loveteam royalty KathNiel (Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla), is another pioneer of the Wattpad film genre. The film follows Kenneth (Padilla) and Kelay (Bernardo) as they discover the past love story between Kenneth’s father Kenji (also Padilla, played by Richard Gomez as an adult), the “gangster,” and Kelay’s aunt Athena (also Bernardo, played by Dawn Zulueta as an adult). This film is streaming on iWantTFC.
THE AMAZING PRAYBEYT BENJAMIN
One of the highest-grossing Filipino films, The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin, stars Vice Ganda as Col. Benjamin “Benjie” Santos VIII in an action-comedy parody sequel to The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin. Stream the movie for free here.
STARTING OVER AGAIN
Classic Toni Gonzaga-starrer Starting Over Again also turns 10 this year, making Marco and Ginny’s love story a decade old. Gonzaga stars as Ginny, who meets her old flame Marco (Piolo Pascual) once again after leaving the country and ending their relationship, and starts questioning her past decisions. The film is also available for free on YouTube.
MAYBE THIS TIME
This 2014 rom-com starring Sarah Geronimo as Steph and Coco Martin as Tonio follows a couple who met and fell in love over a summer seven years ago but never got closure in their relationship. Steph and Tonio meet again much later and try to figure out if, maybe this time, it’ll work out between them. Stream Maybe This Time here.
BEAUTY IN A BOTTLE
“Come back to the young and beautiful you!” This iconic comedic line by Angelica Panganiban’s Estelle from Beauty in a Bottle is turning 10, too. Alongside Panganiban, the comedy also stars Angeline Quinto as Judith and Assunta de Rossi as Vilma—three women struggling with their own images and the ever-limiting beauty standards of modern day. Watch the film in full here.
THAT THING CALLED TADHANA
Ah, the rom-com that gets us all bitten by the travel bug. Angelica Panganiban and JM de Guzman star in a rom-com all about place, time, memory, and love. Mace (Panganiban) and Anthony (de Guzman) meet at an airport in Rome and traipse around the Philippines as they navigate love and reflect on love lost.
FOREVERMORE
LizQuen’s breakthrough teleserye Forevermore saw Liza Soberano as the hardworking, down-to-earth strawberry farmer Maria and Enrique Gil as the wealthy, often reckless heir Xander in their first series together. After causing damage to Maria’s strawberry truck, Xander reluctantly stays on the farm to help out. Romance, drama, comedy, and familial dispute mark this love story, and you can check the series out here.
MIRABELLA
Julia Barretto takes the lead for the first time in fantasy-drama series Mirabella, where she plays Mira, the daughter of a woman who was cursed to have tree bark-like skin—which she inherited. Mira struggles due to bullying over her appearance, but gets a chance at revenge after she’s able to break the curse. Enrique Gil also stars as her love interest Jeremy. Watch the series here.
THE VOICE KIDS
The very first season of The Voice Kids in the Philippines started airing in 2014. Some notable contestants may be familiar: do the names Lyca Gairanod, Darren Espanto, and JK Labajo ring a bell? These stars, now young adults that have made a name for themselves, rose to fame after their stints on The Voice Kids. In effect, their careers have also spanned about ten years. Crazy how time flies.
