Today is April, which means it’s April Fools Day. But this week in music is no way a joke. While it may have sounded like a joke at first, BTS and Snoop Dogg are actually collaborating on a new song together. With pandemic restrictions lifting, concerts are being held once more. TWICE are headed back to the US for their first ever stadium concert. SB19’s long delayed concert with Dunkin Donuts is finally coming just around the corner, and Stray Kids had a great week as their scored their first number one on the Billboard 200 album charts. Oh, and they’re most likely having a concert in the Philippines soon. Finally, BINI is currently holding auditions for fans to be part of their next music video while Taylor Swift is getting an honorary degree from NYU this May. That’s Dr. Taylor Swift, tyvm.

With all the April Fools jokes flying around, you might forget that some of the biggest artists decided to open the month of April with anticipated drops and straight bangers. Here are some of the new releases of the week that are no laughing matter.

AS IT WAS – HARRY STYLES

Harry Styles is back and we missed him so. For this new era, he trades in his rockstar sound with an upbeat pop synth vibe. As It Was may sound fun and catchy, but its lyrics tell a story of how things change, and not for the better. The track serves as the lead single of his highly anticipated new album, Harry’s House. The 13-track album is coming this May 20. Also, keep an eye out for Harry this April as he’s headlining Coachella this April 15 and 22 where he will perform As It Was for the first time. What could make things even better is if rumors that Harry is going to Manila for his upcoming tour are true.

UP – BINI AND BGYO

Ever since they made their debuts a little over a year ago, BINI and BGYO have been on an upward trajectory with little signs of slowing down. And their new song, Up, is reflective of their ambitions to reach greater heights. Serving as their first official song together, Up is a fun and funky disco-infused anthem of achieving your goals. It also serves as the official theme song for their new documentary which follows their travels in Dubai.

WHEN YOU’RE GONE – SHAWN MENDES

The inner Marites in us wants to think that this song is at least somewhat related to Camila Cabello, especially when you hear the lyrics. But we’ll just assume that Shawn is talking in general matters with his new song When You’re Gone. The upbeat pop track sees the Canadian singer express his regret on saying goodbye to a former flame and realizing just how happy he was in the relationship. The song is also one of Shawn’s best in years.

NO WAY MAN – MNL48

MNL48 really said patience is a virtue with the release of the highly anticipated seventh single, No Way Man. It’s been a little over a year and a half since the idol grouped dropped their last single, so it’s safe to say that this was a long time coming. With No Way Man, the girl group give us a 5 minute epic pop explosion, as well as choreography and production values worthy of the MNL48 name.

UP AT NIGHT – KEHLANI AND JUSTIN BIEBER

Admittedly, we were skeptical when we first heard that Kehlani and Justin Bieber were going to team up for a song. But we are happy to be proven wrong. Kehlani and Justin bring the R&B funk with up at night, a love song that sees the two musician sing about how much they love their significant other and how thinking of them keeps them up at night.

PABALIK SA’YO – DARREN ESPANTO

Darren Espanto has been known to deliver A-tier vocals and that was on full display in his new song, Pabalik Sa’yo. The young musician gives us R&B ballad vibes as he sings about wanting to be with that special someone. It’s a track that harkens back to the slow song jams of the early 2000s.

TAKE MY HAND – 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER

5 Seconds of Summer channel their newer pop sound for their new single, Take My Hand. Featuring an epic production and strong vocals, the song is an inspirational anthem of finding that trust in someone when you’re spiralling and not letting go.

GLITCH MODE – NCT DREAM

NCT Dream puts the technology in Neo Culture Technology with their latest comeback, Glitch Mode. Mixing pop, hip-hop, and a little bit of rock, Glitch Mode is a love song sung through the lenses of technology as seen in the many tech focused references in the track. Along with the release of the song is their second full-length album of the same name that’s worth the listen.

PANCIT- JUAN KARLOS AND JANINE BERDIN

Juan Karlos decided to spoil us this week with not one, not two, but three new songs. Aminin, Buksan, and Pancit are three distinct songs that give the listener unique flavors. Take for example Pancit, his collab with Janin Berdin. The smooth and jazzy track is about puppy love and the bubbling affection you have for someone.

BLOW – JACKSON WANG

If you’re a fan of Jackson Wang, then you know that the K-pop idol is an all-rounder who can deliver on multiple fronts. And with the release of his new song Blow, Jackson surprises us once more with his new persona. The track features an explosive sound that blends punchy guitar riffs with anthemic pop beats. Blow’s dramatic nature is accompanied by an equally dramatic music video brimming with fiery energy, theatrical suspense, choreography, and fashion. The video is actually the first introduction of fans to Jackson’s Magic Man persona. It inspired the creation and direction of his second full-length album of the same name dropping later this year.

TAKE YOU DOWN – YUGYEOM AND COOGIE

Yugeyom is a conflicted man in his new song, Take You Down. The smooth R&B banger sees the Got7 member and rapper Coogie team up on a song about their frustrations in a relationship. Yugyeom also released his first single album of the same name that includes another track called Lights.

BAWAL SUMUKO DITO – FLICT-G, SMUGGLAZ, SKANT VEE, HAKOB, AND A$TRO

Local rap acts Flict-G, Smugglaz, Skant Vee, Hakob, and A$tro exchange fire bars in this collaboration track with PUBG Mobile. The track encourages everyone, especially the youth to become the best version of themselves. Fans of the game will may also enjoy the track’s music video with its PUBG Mobile-inspired storyline.

P.S. – VXON

Rookie P-pop group celebrate their first ever comeback on April 1 with the release of their new song called P.S. If The Beast saw them channel bad-ass energy, P.S. sees the group display a lighter and brighter side to them with this cute love song. It’s a fun pop song about admitting your feelings to your crush and promising to take care of them. But the group isn’t one to disappoint with their dance break in the end.

REAL LOVE – OH MY GIRL

Oh My Girl is back with a new music in the 10-track album called Real Love. With lyrical sensibility and colorful storytelling that takes their work to exciting new places, their sophomore album is anchored on perfumes and lingering fragrances as narrative motifs in telling stories of young romance and infatuation. The self-titled single Real Love serves as the group’s comeback song and features a sweet, addictive brass sound and pop melodies. Aside from the lead track, the album explores a range of music styles spanning pop, EDM, R&B, Latin, and hip-hop influences.

ATTENTION – MILEY CYRUS

Anyone who’s seen Miley Cyrus live knows just how good of a performer she can be. And lucky for us, Miley recently dropped a new album called ATTENTION: MILEY LIVE, which is a collection of her live performances in one of her recent shows in Los Angeles. And the superstar was kind enough to include a new song called ATTENTION in the live album.
