While it isn’t quite Halloween just yet, it doesn’t mean you can’t start preparing for it as early as now. Take your cues from Justin De Dios of SB19, who might have ideas for your next cosplay.
It is no surprise that at this point, despite the circumstances; many are already leaning in on the holidays. As is culturally expected of us Christmas-loving Filipinos, festive decorations are already slowly making its way into households, yuletide promos are popping up left and right, and of course, the carols are starting to fill the air. But while that may be the case for a lot, there are those getting in the mood for another kind of holiday, the spooky kind. Yes, Christmas will always be top of mind, but you have to admit, Halloween is something else. All the gore and lore aside, as well as of the many horrors (at least the entertaining kind) that abound the eve of All Saints Day, this day has become an opportunity to let your imagination run wild and wear absolutely whatever for the heck of it, or well, buckets of candy.
Sure, trick or treat isn’t quite the tradition here in the Philippines, but over the last few years, more people have been getting into the spirit of Halloween by wearing costumes. In the same breath of the conversation, however, it can be said that outside the holiday, a lot of Filipinos have been into cosplay.
Now, you might be thinking, why are talking a whole lot about it when it is more or less a month away? Well, because if you are one to take it seriously, then plans have to be made and preparations underway. Just ask Justin of SB19, who has been dishing out cosplay ideas on social media.
THE MASTER OF DISGUISE
It doesn’t take a deep dive into the accounts of Justin De Dios, a fifth of the eponymous P-pop group, SB19 (who also functions as their creative director), to see that he is into the whole nine yards of costumes. With such a clear artistic inclination (he draws, too), Justin of SB19 has taken to cosplay, bringing to life characters from animes and TV shows. And mind you, it is done out of pure resource, because these aren’t custom-made costumes, but instead, these are found objects repurposed as his favorite characters. Good on you, Jah.
From Instagram carousels to TikTok edits, one can sense the swell of fun Justin De Dios is having with his cosplay, so much so that he has found a costumed cohort from some of the boys of SB19, particularly Stell. Their Todoroki and Superman tandem was something we never knew we needed to happen until they made it work.
So, if you are big on Halloween or cosplay, and are already getting ready for Halloween, then Justin of SB19 has a bunch of ideas for you. In need of leads and inspiration? You came to the right place. The best part? This won’t like burn a hole in your pants. Well, unless if that is the look you are going for. But otherwise, these Halloween costume ideas from Justin De Dios, artist extraordinaire, master of disguise, and kid-at-heart will at the very least make you smile. No scares or fright here.
