HBO Max has just released a new teaser trailer for what seems to be their next big thing, The Last of Us. This comes after the brief 20-second glimpse they showed in an omnibus trailer of their future shows last month.

Set to the atmospheric tune of Hank Williams’s Alone And Forsaken, the trailer features a dreary, apocalyptic world complete with major characters in action, the hair-raising Clickers (monsters in advanced stages of infection), a decaying city of Boston (the setting of the story), and some easter eggs both harrowing and exciting; especially that scene (unforgettable for those who played the original game) where the infection has just started and we see Joel with her daughter amid the chaos. (Prepare your tissues!)

THE PREMISE

Starring Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, Wonder Woman 1984) and Bella Ramsey (Game Of Thrones), the story takes place 20 years after a brain-altering pandemic (sounds familiar?) called the Cordyceps infection, ravaged modern civilization and turned the U.S. under the control of the police and military. A paramilitary group called Fireflies is then established with the goal of restoring a lawful government. Fireflies then hire Joel (Pascal) to smuggle the 14-year-old girl Ellie (Ramsey), who seems to be immune to the virus, out of a quarantine zone in a cross-country journey in the hopes of creating a cure. What follows is a heartbreaking journey as Joel and Ellie depend on each other for survival.

The series is based on the critically acclaimed and best-selling video game of the same name developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The Last Of Us is the brainchild of Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog’s creative director who also co-wrote and executive produced the HBO series. He’s joined by Craig Mazin who helmed the award-winning Chernobyl miniseries.

THE LEGACY

The Last Of Us was first released on June 14, 2013. While Druckmann admitted in an interview that he was skeptical about how the audience would receive the video game, TLOU ultimately went on to sell more than 1.3 million units during its launch, the biggest of that year. The Naughty Dog video game franchise also gathered over 200 Game of the Year honors including accolades from the BAFTA Games Awards, IGN, and the Writers Guild of America.

Almost the same time the trailer of the series was released, Naughty Dog also posted a blog on their website for The Last of Us Day 2022, an annual event celebrating the TLOU community “who bring so much positivity, kindness, and joy, not only to us at the studio but to each other.”

“While we felt immense pride in what we accomplished, we could never imagine that nine years later we’d still see new and seasoned players experiencing this game and sharing their passion for Joel and Ellie’s stories,” the video game company said in the blog post. “So many of you have shared how much the series has impacted you, and it’s such a privilege to know that The Last Of Us continues to resonate with players worldwide.”

And since the initial TLOU video game already has an equally acclaimed sequel, we can only get more hyped up about where the series will take us in the future. The Last Of Us is set to premiere in 2023 and is coming to HBO and HBO Max.
