Gen Zs on What It Was Like Growing Up in Strict Households and How It Affected Their ~Adulting~

Can you relate?

Sure, we laughingly look back at the memories of sneaking out or weaving white lies, but growing up under such watchful eyes could leave a lasting mark.

Disclaimer: In this article, we have utilized pseudonyms to safeguard the privacy of the Gen Zs who generously shared their insights with us. These names have been chosen arbitrarily and do not correspond to their actual identities.

For Gen Z, tiptoeing around the confines of strict households has been a defining rite of passage. From curfews tighter than Cinderella’s to the weight of academic expectations, the firm hand of our parents has shaped our lives in more ways than we ever bargained for.

So, we decided to hear out the voices of Gen Zs who’ve weathered the storm of strict parenting, to glean insights into its lasting effects on their ~adulting~ habits. After all, most of us have been there, done that, and can totally relate to everyone’s experiences.

Almond Mom

“While memes about almond moms are funny to me, growing up with parents who were strict about how much I ate was freaking frustrating. And their encouraging eating habits wasn’t even healthy because their idea of a balanced diet isn’t balanced at all. As I got older, I remember sneaking snacks when I could or overeating when I had the chance. It created a toxic relationship with food where I felt guilty for indulging, and I’m also overly conscious about my size, even though I’m actually all bones at the moment.” – Cyrene, 20

Courses and College Life

“Growing up with such strict parents who didn’t allow me to attend my dream college and pursue my dream program was tough, to say the least. It felt like a door slamming shut on my dreams of becoming a fashion designer, leaving me feeling disappointed and somewhat resentful.

And now that I’m an adult, I find myself facing challenges that stem from the limitations imposed by my parents’ choices. I struggle with my current subjects, and I can only imagine working in the medical field with no passion for it. It’s a constant battle between honoring my parents’ wishes and following my own heart, but what can I do about it? I owe so much to those who are paying my tuition fees.” – Cassandra, 23

For Support, Please Don’t Dial Mom

“I am so proud to call myself a content creator. I get to travel, be creative, and meet like-minded people who are now my friends. Sure, deciding to drop out of college wasn’t the conventional route, but it’s hands down one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. What’s heartbreaking, though, is still seeing my parents’ disappointment because they don’t think of it as a ‘real job.’ While I no longer seek their validation, my fear of failure is constantly causing me anxiety. Like, twice a day I’ll ask myself, ‘What if they’re right?’” – Maddie, 21

My Stylist? My Mom

“I recall countless debates with my mom over skirt lengths, sleeve styles, and even the colors I chose to wear. What’s worse is we already had a dress code at school; I just kept on wishing we didn’t have one at home. I guess it simply affected me in a way that I still don’t know my personal style, while everyone else already has their aesthetics. Now that I’m thinking about it, I think it also affected my decision-making too! It’s like I can still hear my mom’s judgmental voice whenever I’m shopping for clothes or getting ready in the morning.” – Chin, 25

Social Skills and Missing Out

“My parents had a knack for RSVP-ing on my behalf. I wasn’t allowed to attend parties or social events unless they were school-related, which often meant missing out on A LOT. Don’t get me wrong; I understand their intentions to protect me from alcohol and bad influences, but it hindered my ability to form connections outside of the family circle. To this day, I still struggle with social interactions and asserting myself in new situations—it’s like I’m always in awkward mode.” – Mark, 23

Trying New Things

“My parents weren’t the most strict, per se, but they didn’t let me experience many things on my own, which now gives me a bit of anxiety when I try them (and then, for some reason, they’re shocked when they ask me if I’ve done this or that and find out I, in fact, have not). I grew up pretty sheltered, and while I’m pretty well-adjusted now, it’s made it harder for me to navigate everything from failure to communicating my feelings to trying new things on my own.” – Monique, 23

7 Classic Anime to Watch for the Ultimate Nostalgia Trip

line
These anime just hit different

Whether to relive the dream that the power of friendship can solve anything, or ignite the feeling of excitement rushing home from school to catch the latest ep, here are some of our favorite anime series growing up.

Related: ICYMI, Here are Some of the Times The Philippines Made a Cameo in Anime

Japan is one of Filipinos’ preferred travel destinations, and has been for some time. This may be because it’s one of the more accessible and affordable countries to visit with four seasons. But no one can deny that our love for anime has something to do with it. Whether your love for anime is enduring or you’re just getting started on your journey to becoming a superfan, here are some classic series for you to check out:

Dragon Ball (1986)

Dragon Ball tells the story of Bulma and Goku, as they search for the eponymous Dragon Balls – a collection of magical artifacts that summon a dragon with the ability to grant a wish to whoever is able to collect them all. On its face, its story may seem fairly commonplace, but this is because it basically laid the groundwork for similar anime that came after it. The influence of this anime was easily felt and seen in other Weekly Shonen Jump publications, namely the Big Three: Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece. While the great man who created Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama, is sadly no longer with us, our love for his story and characters will always be over 9000.

SAILOR MOON (1992)

This show truly had us playing pretend with our friends by daylight and dreaming of our own Tuxedo Mask by moonlight. Sailor Moon, one of the OG shōjo series to grace the anime stage, completely defined the modern magical girl genre – so much so that many series to this day pay homage to and parody Usagi’s iconic transformation sequence. A tale of girlhood and friendship, it’s no wonder this coming-of-age anime still has so much recall and influence decades later – regardless of whether you’ve even watched it.

Pokémon (1997)

Originally a gaming series that features perhaps an equally famous lovable mouse, Pokémon is one of, if not the, largest media franchises in the world. It’s no surprise that the game spawned a wildly popular TV series that spanned 25 years. Following Ash Ketchum, our protagonist who mysteriously stopped aging at 10 years old, on his quest to become the very best trainer (like no one ever was) and the different friends, human and Pokémon alike, that he made along the way has been marked with laughter and tears (I’ll never not cry at Bye Bye, Butterfree). This time last year, the immortal Ash finally became the Pokémon champion – signifying the end to his appearance in the show. Good luck, Ash and Pikachu! We will never forget you.

Yu Yu Hakusho (1992)

Perhaps better known locally as Ghost Fighter!, Yu Yu Hakusho is another classic in the shōnen genre that helped solidify common tropes and pretty much encapsulated the soft, dreamy art style commonly associated with 90s anime. When the delinquent high-schooler Yusuke (or Eugene if you like) unexpectedly sacrifices his life to save a boy who didn’t need saving, he is given a second chance at life in exchange for helping to maintain the balance between the Human World and Spirit World, essentially becoming a “spirit detective”. The Dark Tournament Arc is perhaps one of the most memorable tournament arcs in anime to-date.

Ranma 1/2 (1989)

Comedy. Martial arts. Romantic tension featuring various archetypes of the harem AND reverse harem genre. Who could ask for more? Ranma 1/2 features one of the most unique premises for an anime of its time – a young martial artist is cursed to turn into a girl when exposed to cold water and back into a boy when exposed to hot water. The protagonist’s strange condition naturally leads to a ton of ridiculous scenarios that play on gender stereotypes – something that we as a society have a growing appreciation for.

Fruits Basket (2001, 2019)

Did someone order a shōjo series with a side of trauma? Fruits Basket, which recently got a reboot that completes the original story as told in the manga, follows Tohru Honda – a young high-schooler who recently lost her mother and finds herself in the company of a mysterious family cursed to turn into various members of the Chinese Zodiac when embraced by a member of the opposite sex. Filled with cute, wholesome moments as well as scenes that will have you ugly-crying into the night, this anime shows us how one can break through childhood trauma with kindness and acceptance.

Voltes V (1977)

Just reading the title causes the iconic intro music to start playing in our heads. Voltes V was first acquired and then broadcast to the Filipino masses by the GMA Network in May of 1978 and is considered to be one of the first anime to grace local television screens. Featuring a cast of characters specially trained to man a super robot designed to defend the Earth from a race of alien invaders, so great was this anime’s influence that it even spawned a 2023 local live adaptation – Voltes V: Legacy

7 Moments From Billboard Philippines’ Women In Music Event That Had Us Screaming “Mother!”

line
Mother! Nanay!

From Sarah Geronimo devouring the stage to BINI being an audience favorite, it was pure mother energy at the Women In Music event.

Related: Going Global: What Her Historic Billboard Honor Means To Sarah Geronimo

Last March 22, the Samsung Hall at SM Aura radiated unapologetic Filipina energy with Billboard Philippines’ first-ever Women In Music event. The night saw the publication honor Belle Mariano (Listener’s Choice), Morissette (People’s Choice), Ena Mori (Rule Breaker), BINI (Rising Star), Moira dela Torre (Hitmaker), Pilita Corrales (Icon), Regine Velasquez (Powerhouse), and Sarah Geronimo (Woman of the Year).

As you can imagine, the energy in that room was nothing short of inspiring as fellow artists, creatives, executives, and a few hundred lucky fans got to witness a celebration of women in OPM. And with that, we also got moments where we had no choice but to say mother. Scroll down for the highlights, interactions, and performances at the Women In Music event that gave what needed to be given.

DENISE JULIA AND SARAH GERONIMO’S FANGIRL MOMENT

On the blue carpet, Sarah Geronimo and Denise Julia ran into each other and mutually fangirled, with Denise even letting out an audible scream when she realized that Sarah was near her (same, TBH). While we weren’t shocked to know that the rising R&B star is a fan of the pop superstar, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that not only does Sarah know who Denise is, but is also a fan of her music. And that’s on what? Queens supporting queens.

BINI’S MIKHA AND AIAH WITH BELLE MARIANO

With an event this star-studded, anything can happen. Case in point, as Belle Mariano was leaving the washroom, BINI’s Mikha and Aiah were entering, and the two shared a moment, a few hugs, and compliments outside the girls’ bathroom. Just Gen Z stars mingling outside the washroom, no big deal.

SARAH GERONIMO’S PROVING WHY SHE’S WOMAN OF THE YEAR

What’s a stronger word for mother? Fresh from winning her Global Force award, Sarah Geronimo bagged Woman of the Year and owned the stage with her epic performance. With the biggest production of the night, Sarah started from the crowd before making her way to the stage for a two-song set of Dati-Dati and Ikot-Ikot. Seeing her go from house pop to power ballad so effortlessly, and then proceeding to deliver a touching speech on believing in yourself and not listening to the noise is just one of the many reasons why she took home the biggest honor of the night.

MIMIYUUH AND MOIRA DELIVERING A JOINT SLAY

If there was an award for best baddie duo that night, it would have probably gone to Mimi and Moira. The two showed up and slayed their looks, with Moira in her stunning black gown and Mimiyuuh looking like she stepped out of the ocean in her seashell dress. Later that night, Moira brought the emotions with her performance and dedicating her award to her mom, while Mimi got the crowd in hysterics with her hilarious speech as she introduced Moira. It’s like OA and nonchalant in the best way possible.

BINI BEING A FAN-FAVORITE

@nylonmanila #BINI’s first live performance of ‘Salamin Salamin’ at #BBPHWomenInMusic ♬ original sound – NYLON Manila

Let’s count all the ways BINI won at Billboard Philippines’ Women In Music event. First, they chewed in their denim-inspired looks. Next, they brought the house down with their performance of Salamin, Salamin. Third, whenever their names were mentioned or faces featured on the screen, fans went wild as they were one of the artists with the loudest cheers that night. Finally, they won the Rising Star award, which was made more special by how SB19’s Stell was the one who introduced the group and presented it to them. It’s giving P-pop rise, as it should.

THE ICONS TABLE

Regine Velasquez, Sarah Geronimo, SB19’s Stell, and Belle Mariano all sitting at the same table? What we would give to hear their conversations.

BINI WITH SARAH GERONIMO

Rumor has it that one of the four Horsemen of the Motherpocalypse is BINI and Sarah G being on stage together for a performance. This is what pop excellence looks like.

Abante, babae!

Student leader and Innabuyog-Gabriela Youth UP Baguio chairperson Aya Abillar talks about how the organization fights to uphold women’s rights and the role of youth in collective liberation.

Trigger warning: this article includes mention of gender-based violence and assault.

Related: Abante Babae: 7 Filipino Films That Celebrate Women Empowerment

In the last few decades, there have been significant developments in the women’s movement both globally and locally. However, the question remains—are women truly free? With gender gaps in everything from employment to earnings, ever-present threats of gender-based violence, rampant cases of sexual assault, and systemic barriers that marginalize communities of women, the resounding answer very clearly seems to be no—and no amount of pushback along the lines of “But women can do and be anything now! What more do they want?” can change that.

Young women are leading the charge in terms of activism, advocating for their own rights and welfare as well as others’ and organizing and protesting against inequality and injustice. They not only seek personal empowerment, but collective liberation from all the forces that limit women. Plenty of organizations, alliances, and communities exist in the Philippines, and one in particular can be found up in the mountains of the Cordillera region, where proactive and critical students work collectively for the pursuit of freedom.

BREAKING BARRIERS TO FREEDOM

innabuyog-gabriela youth up baguio women's rights youth organization

Innabuyog-Gabriela Youth is a student-led organization at the University of the Philippines Baguio. It is a university chapter of Innabuyog, a regional alliance of indigenous women’s organizations in the Cordillera.

The organization seeks to foster an awareness among women and youth about women’s rights, particularly Indigenous women’s rights, as the Cordillera region is home to several indigenous groups that face a myriad of threats to their land, culture, and livelihood. Using an intersectional and class-conscious approach, Innabuyog-Gabriela Youth wants to make meaningful change in law, in systems, and in practice in order to build a gender-sensitive, class-conscious community and end all forms of violence against women.

innabuyog-gabriela youth up baguio women's rights youth organization

The organization is currently headed by sophomore and Anthropology major Aya Abillar, serving as its chairperson, primary spokesperson, and representative. We got to hear from the 20-year old student leader all about IGY and their hopes to build a better present and future.

Could you tell us briefly about Innabuyog-Gabriela Youth as an organization and the work that you do?

Innabuyog Gabriela Youth is a national democratic mass organization in UP Baguio which promotes the rights and welfare of women, especially the women youth of Cordillera.

It comes from the Kalinga term, “Innabuyog,” referring to the practice of Indigenous peoples in the Cordillera of helping each other through collective, cooperative work. “GABRIELA” is appended in recognition of Gabriela Silang’s contribution to the overall Filipino struggle for liberation. “Youth” acknowledges the historical role of the Filipino youth in pursuing meaningful social change.

What are some of your main projects and initiatives?

Some of Innabuyog-Gabriela Youth’s main initiatives include conducting regular educational discussions, basic mass integration, as well as protest actions and mobilizations to raise awareness on the pertinent issues that Filipino women face.

IGY currently spearheads the campaign for necessary revisions in the UP Anti-Sexual Harassment Code of 2017 in forwarding the UPB Anti-Sexual Harassment Demands of 2022 for a more accessible, systematic, and concise processing of sexual harassment-related grievances.

Other main projects include One Billion Rising, 18 Days of Activism from the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women leading up to the International Human Rights Day, Women’s Month during March, and Ladies’ Night—activities and events that seek to consolidate the calls of women youth for genuine safe and democratic spaces.

innabuyog-gabriela youth up baguio women's rights youth organization aya abillar

With every project or initiative or protest, what do you hope to accomplish or achieve?

We hope to achieve actual and meaningful change. More than raising awareness, we want a society that recognizes and prioritizes women’s rights and contribution to production; a country with self-determination; a national industry that relies on itself, with equal opportunities for women and all gender identities in economic, political, and cultural spheres; and lastly, a community where gender-based oppression, exploitation, discrimination, and violence can no longer foster.

What do you think drives students to join Innabuyog-Gabriela Youth? What drove you to join and even take up a leadership position?

I feel that the alienation young women feel from their experiences of oppression and perception of their place in society relative to their gender and class push them to seek a safe space with other women where they can make sense of these collectively. At least, this was true for me.

I committed myself to the best of my abilities to IGY and for the common cause of national democracy and genuine liberation for all women and gender-oppressed people. I’m also thankful to my fellow sisters in struggle for deeming me capable enough to lead and serve the masses together.

As an organization dedicated to serving communities of women, what can you say about the unfortunately rampant instances of assault and sexual misconduct among even progressive organizations?

I think that all progressive organizations are responsible for enacting systems of care and safety in consolidating victims, and to address concerns of safety, transparency, and accountability in these processes. We don’t shy away from criticism, because that’s how we can collectivize and move forward, so that we remain true to our cause of ensuring the welfare of women in the movement.

We are unyielding in our commitment to a nationalist, scientific, and mass-oriented liberation movement that is intolerant of abuse and sexual misconduct. And we condemn all perpetrators of assault and abuse in progressive spaces. A rigorous investigation and accountability process is needed in handling these cases.

What do you think are the biggest challenges that Filipino women face today?

I would say the biggest challenges that Filipino women face today are the systemic barriers set by the current macho-feudal and patriarchal society that keep women vulnerable to gender-based violence and harassment, lock them out of the formal economic sphere with more women either underpaid and in low-paying jobs, or not paid at all for their domestic labor.

There’s also a lack of safe spaces for women in the home, workplace, fields, and in the greater society. Indigenous women are at heightened risk of further marginalization due to development aggression, land use conversion, militarization, displacement from their ancestral lands, lack of access to basic services such as education and healthcare, and wrongful terrorist designations and continuous attacks against IP rights defenders.

In all your work as part of the organization, what gives you hope? And for that matter, how important is hope in the struggle?

I derive hope from the fact that countless generations of women have struggled before me. Hope is what breathes life to the struggle, one that is rooted in a love—for other women and in solidarity with all other oppressed identities—that seeks to liberate. Our shared experiences of pain and resistance to systemic injustices are transformed by this love to collective persistent and meaningful acts of struggle towards a genuinely free and safe society.

Suns Out, Zits Out: Here’s How To Choose Sunscreen For Acne-Prone Skin

Your next summer essential.

This summer, acne should be the last of your worries.

Selecting the perfect sunscreen for acne-prone skin is tricky. You can’t just breeze through the aisles or swipe through endless online options and hope to stumble upon the holy grail of skincare. Acne-prone skin requires a sunscreen that’s as light as a feather, yet as sturdy as a battle-tested shield, all while being gentle enough to avoid sending your pores into a frenzy.

As someone who’s no stranger to the triple threat of acne-prone, greasy, and sensitive skin, believe me, I’ve been there. Thankfully, finding the ideal match doesn’t have to be a daunting task anymore. Here’s a guide on how to choose sunscreen for acne-prone skin—and if you need a specific recommendation, we’ve got you covered.

Back to Basics

Gone are the days of gooey, greasy, and sticky sunscreen formulas that leave a dreaded white cast. Today, more people are recognizing the importance of sunscreen and why it’s a non-negotiable step in their skincare routine.

Regardless of the season, whether the sun is shining brightly or it’s pouring rain, sunscreen is essential, especially during summer when sun exposure is heightened. And if you’re still on the fence about slathering on sunscreen daily, consider the wrath of UVA and UVB rays—UVA digs deep, laying the groundwork for wrinkles and fine lines, while UVB throws a tantrum on the skin’s surface, leaving behind a trail of redness, spots, and unwanted pigmentation.

Check the Label

This summer, keep three things in mind: skin damage results from UVA/UVB rays, acne-prone skin is more susceptible to breakouts during this season, and always check the label. After all, your skin should be the least of your worries during your summer escapades.

So, checking the label? It means keeping an eye out for specific attributes that will safeguard your skin and ward off breakouts. Begin your search by seeking out sunscreens boasting SPF 50+/PA++++ with Hybrid UV Protection Technology—a surefire guarantee of top-tier broad-spectrum protection against both UVA/UVB rays and pesky blue light, all without the unsightly white cast or any hint of irritation.

Additionally, prioritize non-comedogenic formulas, ensuring that your chosen product is crafted without any pore-clogging ingredients. Picture yourself basking in the sun’s rays while simultaneously keeping shine and spots firmly far away—now that’s the kind of dream team we all deserve!

Need a Reco?

That ultimate summer sidekick to tackle those rays and keep acne at bay? Look no further than Oxecure Daily Sunscreen SPF 50+/PA++++. Don’t let acne cramp your style—this superhero of a sunscreen combines physical and clean chemical filters to offer SPF 50+/PA++++ broad-spectrum protection, suitable for all skin types.

But wait, there’s more! With its non-irritating, white cast-free formula, it not only evens out your skin tone but also stays non-comedogenic, meaning no unwanted pore-clogging drama. And as if that weren’t enough, it’s powered up with Butterfly Bush and Dandelion Extracts, giving your skin an extra shield against pollutants.

Grab your Oxecure online, slather it on, and get ready to conquer the summer with extra confidence! Prices start at P549 for 30g and P129 for 6g.

Going Global: What Her Historic Billboard Honor Means To Sarah Geronimo

line
"While it’s very fulfilling as an artist to be considered as a Global Force, it ignited a fire in me.”

Sarah Geronimo opens up about being a Global Force, the responsibility it entails, being a Filipina in OPM, and more.

What does it mean to be a Global Force? Is it measured in album sales and chart positions? How many sold-out concerts you have? Or is it the ability to turn every day into a slay and have an Masters degree in Servenomics? Regardless, being seen as a Global Force is both an honor and brings an expectation of who you are as an artist. Being known outside your homeland is a sign that your artistry has reached another level, one that is to be cherished and nurtured.

This is something Sarah Geronimo knows well. As the first Filipina to win the Global Force Award from Billboard’s Women In Music Awards, as well as the first homegrown artist to be recognized at the event, the OPM superstar is aware that the honor marks a highlight for her lustrous career and one she hopes pushes OPM to greater heights.

AND THAT’S ON BEING A GLOBAL FORCE

“I was so surprised. Talaga ba?,” says Sarah Geronimo to NYLON Manila on her initial reaction to learning that she’s being bestowed with the Global Force Award. While the pop icon has had a still-thriving career few can match, the honor was something she didn’t expect. In a moment of frankness, she says that her taking a break from the industry, combined with her recent releases that she felt weren’t as well-received by the general audience as she’d hoped, caused her to have her doubts. So, receiving the call was the boost she needed. “It gave me a brand new hope, inspiration, and motivation to continue to pursue my passion for music and creating original songs.”

Flying to Los Angeles to personally receive the award was a true #ProudPinoy moment for her. “It’s an honor to be chosen to represent our country. I feel so blessed to be there and accept the award on behalf of our amazing Filipino artists.” More importantly, she proudly shares the recognition with the rest of the OPM industry, one she feels has been long overdue for the global spotlight. “Sobra akong excited for the Philippine music industry that this is happening.”

Being named a Global Force, especially as one of the first to win it, is no easy feat. But this is Sarah Geronimo we’re talking about, and her career speaks for itself. Yet, being recognized on an international level does not mean the pop powerhouse is resting on her laurels. It brought her a renewed push to do what she loves and does so well. “It comes with a great responsibility,” she says on what it means to be a Global Force. “While it’s very fulfilling as an artist to be considered as a Global Force, it ignited a fire in me.”

One thing that has made Sarah loved by so many is that she will always give excellence in what she does. More than just a passive participant in her life, Sarah has, is, and will continue to take control of what she does and stand firm on what she wants. Trust, you can count on her to know that what she does will come from the heart.

“You have to believe in the material you do and bring out there. Be authentic as an artist because people will see through you.” She’s doing what she loves, and that is what matters the most. “Kahit na maraming hardships and mga hurdles, bumabalik at bumabalik pa rin ako sa pagmamahal sa musika and performing.”

FOR FILIPINAS, BY FILIPINAS

From the early 2000s when CDs were everywhere to the streaming platforms and TikTok trends of today, Sarah Geronimo has been through it all. Her career has spanned many massive shifts in the music industry, even the way Sarah consumes music has changed. “When I listen to new songs parang intro lang dapat it should capture my attention na. If not, I will quickly change and skip to the next track.”

The music industry has changed, something Sarah is well aware of. Yet, no matter the season, she remains as relevant as ever. So, what’s her secret? “You have to evolve.” However, the OPM star makes a point that, while she adapts to the times, she doesn’t fall into the trap of putting yourself in a box. As she sees it, “Ang goal kasi is to connect with your listeners, to your audience, so kung sa magpapakahon ka sa goal ‘to na dapat this song has to be a hit on TikTok, mas nagiging frozen ka. ‘Di dapat ganon yung goal mo. The ultimate goal is to bring inspiration and happiness to your listeners.”

And speaking of the changing times, as a new generation of women make their mark in the music industry, Sarah praises the Gen Z artists entering the world more confident in their identity, voice, and passions. “Sila, alam na agad who they want to be, what kind of artist they want to be,” she gushes on female Gen Z musicians. And if you’re wondering, Sarah singles out Ylona Garcia (“I think she’s beautiful, very talented”) and Fatima Lagueras (a former member of Sarah’s team on The Voice Teens who she considers good yet underrated) as young Filipinas she would love to work with someday. Let’s get those manifestation circles ready.

It all goes back to the power of women taking up space in places that still have their ways to go of fully welcoming and supporting women. Aside from being able to tap into their emotions to bring out a multitude of colors in music, women in OPM will always have their inner Filipina in them. “Kahit na we may be strongly influenced by Western influences, our core values remain intact.” From Manila to Los Angeles and beyond, the Pinay identity will always be there. “No matter what hindi tatanggalin sa puso ko yung values, convictions as Filipino women that we deserve respect,” Sarah says matter-of-factly.

SUPPORT OPM

Sarah Geronimo is no stranger to being recognized globally for her talents and achievements. From international organizations to global artists, Sarah has landed on their radars. But more than just a personal W, taking home the Global Force Award should also serve as another sign that OPM has always been worth supporting. “Embrace our own language and also our unique physical appearance,” she shares on how people can support Filipino musicians.

Despite the popularity of international music and artists in the country, listening to OPM and stanning local artists is never something to be ashamed of. So, take it from Sarah Geronimo and believe in our own and that it can go beyond the bare minimum. “We can go farther pa. When you do not open yourself out there, parang you feel complacent. Dun ka nasustuck but when you open yourself to new opportunities, you will discover yung mga strengths and capabilities mo as a person.”
