Multi-hyphenate performer AC Bonifacio is taking her talent to musical theatre as part of The Sandbox Collective’s adaptation of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

Dancer, singer, and actress AC Bonifacio is about to put on her schoolgirl uniform and take her place on the stage as a cast member of upcoming musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! Theatre company The Sandbox Collective announced that the 21-year-old will play Marcy Park in her musical theatre debut, and we’ll get to see the star sing, dance, and act live on stage in 2024.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a Tony Award-winning musical comedy with a book by Rachel Sheinkin and music and lyrics by William Finn. The Philippine adaptation will be directed by theatre mainstay Missy Maramara. It tells the quirky, fun story of six young teens competing in their school spelling bee and the also-quirky adults that host it. The Sandbox Collective, in partnership with ABS-CBN, Star Magic, and Teatro Kapamilya, will be kicking off its 2024 season—and its 10th year in the industry—with the musical, which will be staged starting February 24 and will run until March 17 at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Black Box Theater in Circuit Makati.

AC has always wanted to pursue a career in singing, dancing, and performing. From the dance floor as a performer, screen as a burgeoning actress, and now stage as a soon-to-be theater star, AC is lowkey setting up the building blocks for her EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). Who can deny her success at achieving her dreams such a young age? Coming from dancing and acting roles in Step Up: All In, Riverdale, Shake, Rattle & Roll Extreme, as well as a dream-come-true role as the spunky, driven Cadence in musical series Lyric and Beat, AC’s ready to embark on a whole new journey—one that’s taking her to the theatre.

The young performer will play Marcy Park, alternating with Shanaia Gomez, who is also making her theatre debut. They are joined by a mix of newbies to the musical theatre scene and veterans in the industry. The rest of the cast of young spellers will also alternate in the roles. A few of them are rising stars making their theatre debut, and a few of them have taken the stage before. Diego Aranda and Luis Marcelo will star as Chip, Krystal Brimner and Angela Ken as Olive, Elian Dominguez and Shaun Ocrisma as Leaf, Becca Coates and Justine Narciso as Schwarzy, and Joshy Ramirez and Ron Balgos as Barfée.

The musical is interactive, allowing “guest spellers” from the audience to participate. And clearly, as the cast is composed of young people playing young people, and its themes center on youth and the pressure they’re under, it’s going to be a musical that resonates while still being a great experience.

While The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will kick off The Sandbox Collective’s 2024 season, the Manila-based collective is also set to stage a few more favorites next year: Little Shop of Horrors and Tiny Beautiful Things. In the meantime, their star-studded adaptation of the Spelling Bee looks to be a staging perfect for the new generation.

It’s been a wild year for SB19 this 2023. Aside from the usual stadium shows and chart-topping hits, the group made a big career move with the formation of 1Z Entertainment (and the ensuing fallout). But even those initial uncertainties weren’t enough to stop the group from doing what they do best. And this year, they did so while being joined by local and international artists. In a P-pop x K-pop moment, SB19 and Sandara Park decided to break the internet by teaming up for a track for Acer that brought out our inner wanderlust. While it was a promotional single, they still gave it their all. And yes, they also did the GENTO dance challenge together.

While some would rather start fan wars and bring down other artists to bring their faves up, the artists themselves are cool with each other. Case in point, SB19’s Pablo and Justin with HORI7ON’s Kyler and Winston as they dance to the group’s single SIX7EEN. This is the first time they’ve met, and we hope it won’t be the last.

SB19 performing at Asia Artist Awards 2023 was already a treat. But the announcement that they would be joined by &TEAM for a special collab stage brought the excitement through the roof. The two groups did not disappoint with how they danced to GENTO as they delivered the fire and badass energy. In a show that had its strong Pinoy moments, this was undoubtedly a highlight from AAA 2023. 

SB19 X JVKE

Did we expect a remix of JVKE’s golden hour with SB19? No. But are we happy it’s real? Absolutely! SB19 was a great addition to the stunning track as they made it local with their Tagalog verses but also kept up with JVKE in the breathtaking chorus. It really is a golden hour. The fact that they got to perform the track together in person in Boston made it even better.

It wasn’t just SB19 who had a world tour this year, so too did their comeback single GENTO, which became a breakout viral hit that even got approval for submission to the GRAMMYs. Dozens of stars, both local and international, did the dance challenge, but our favorite was when Stell, Justin, and Pablo did it with ATEEZ’s San and Mingi when the K-pop group was in Manila last September for their concert. Many probably remember where they were when San dropped his cover of the dance, so seeing the two groups together lowkey changed lives. At this point, the only thing catchier than the dance is the budots remix of the song.

This collaboration was literally years in the making. After reacting to Stell’s cover of Here’s Your Perfect in 2021, Jamie Miller has been manifesting to the world that he wanted to work with the P-pop artist. That moment finally came during The Voice Generations when the two performed the track on the show. And yes, the wait was worth it.

The fast food chain has stood toe-to-toe with the biggest international chains to become not just a local favorite, but one whose impact is felt in other countries, too. Whether as a budget lunch or a congratulatory meal after school, Jollibee is that fast food staple enjoyed by generations. 

There’s nothing like biting into a crispy piece of Chickenjoy, savoring the sweet sauce of Jolli Spaghetti, and don’t get us started on the peach mango pie. Who says a Jollibee party is only for kids? Not 2NE1.

Believe it or not, there isn’t a single Jollibee store in South Korea (shocking, we know). So, it’s understandable that when aespa landed in Manila for the first time last April, they went searching for the local staple. Members Giselle and Karina both shared their experience trying their food, with the former saying that she wanted to order more of the gravy because it was so good (same) and the latter showcasing her full meal of Jolly Spaghetti, Chickenjoy, Jolly Hotdog, and peach mango pie. It seems quite fitting that when ITZY arrived in the Philippines at the start of 2023 for their two-day concert, one of their first meals was Jollibee. The set-up of the rows of Chickenjoy and Jolli Spaghetti with the soft drinks lowkey gave birthday party vibes, but we’re kinda here for it. And to top it all off, when the group returned a few months later for their BENCH fanmeet, they were spotted checking out Jollibee t-shirts.

“I was pretty much the brains and director of the process, but my cousin ‘Ocho’ really elevated things, surpassing my expectations. I might’ve pushed him a bit hard with my specific vision, which got a bit stressful. However, he went all out on this insane drop we’d been dreaming of. And you know what? The outcome exceeded all my expectations,” he explains.

“I wanted to bring the visuals I’ve had in mind since we started making the song to life, and LA turned out to be the perfect spot for it. Yet, truthfully. YouMeUs and my team in LA exceeded all expectations. Despite being only three people in LA, their effort and discipline were monumental. They managed to make it look like a full-blown production with their dedication, imagination, improvisation, and hard work,” he said.

During the MV launch, Josh also disclosed that one of his favorite parts of the music video was his car scene. “Binurn ko yung gulong niya para maganda yung accelerate,” the singer said, feeling as if he was performing a scene from the hit film series Fast and Furious.

This Montage Moment? The Vibes are Vibing

While the entire music video is poised to make a splash online with its top-tier visuals and laid-back LA vibe, there’s a particular moment that commands all the attention. With debut tracks WILD TONIGHT, Sino Ka Ba, and Pakiusap Lang, Josh is making his mark in the solo scene, rolling alongside fellow SB19 members FELIP and Pablo (so far) on this journey of individual artistry.

Looking ahead, Josh teased the possibility of dropping his solo EP album, hinting at a burst of creativity on the horizon. “You’ll be expecting a lot from me. I’ll be releasing my EP soon. Malay niyo hindi lang isang EP yung i-release ko for next year and I’m looking at early next year release date. Pero titingnan muna natin kung kaya ng timeline,” he reveals.

Chanyeol’s PENSHOPPE fanmeet in Manila saw MOA Arena filled with music, laughter, biceps, and the distinct love between idol and fan.

EXO’s Chanyeol is this close to making the Philippines his second home. Having visited for a fanmeet just two months ago, the K-pop star came back to Manila for the third time this year for a night with Filipino brand PENSHOPPE and his adoring EXO-Ls and Yeolmaes. As one of PENSHOPPE’s newest ambassadors, Chanyeol met up with his Filipino fans through a fanmeet held at Mall of Asia Arena on December 16, 2023. Fans attending simply had to purchase a minimum amount of items at PENSHOPPE to acquire a ticket to the fanmeet.

From showing his biceps to performing a medley of songs, Chanyeol made sure he was Ambassador of the Year 2023, letting his fans have a great time while also having a great time with his large fanbase here in the Philippines. Check out a few highlights from the fanmeet below.

CHANYEOL HAVING THE TIME OF HIS LIFE

The K-pop star had the brightest smile on his face all throughout the show, thoroughly enjoying himself as he performed his own songs, EXO songs, played games, and interacted with his fans. On his third visit this year to the Philippines, Chanyeol saw a filled stadium, and had a great, relaxed night of games and music and fun with his Yeolmaes.

One of the several games during the fanmeet had Chanyeol guessing the dances shown on screen, which included EXO’s Growl, Love Shot, and MAMA. He then danced to the songs himself. EXO hasn’t had a comeback as a complete group in a while, what with all the mandatory military enlistment (Sehun’s enlisting real soon on December 21, as well), but as fans have proven time and time again, they’re willing to wait and enjoy the time they have with each and every member.

FAST TALK

When in the Philippines, right? As part of the fanmeet, Chanyeol played his own version of popular Filipino talk show game Fast Talk, answering questions about music, fashion, trends, and Filipino culture. That day, we all learned—if we didn’t know already—that Chanyeol is a beach guy.

With a love as strong as his arms, Chanyeol yells “mahal kita!” for his Pinoy Yeolmaes right there on stage while baring his biceps. If the screaming was any indication, the fans really enjoyed that.

Lightsticks are some of the most beautiful inventions that elevate a concert experience ever. When the lights lit up the arena in an array of colors as part of a fan project organized by Yeolmaes, it was like a rainbow ocean, an EXO and EXO-L staple at any big show or event.

While not a concert, a fanmeet isn’t complete without some performances. Chanyeol performed his solo songs SSWF, Tomorrow, and his latest single Good Enough during the event. He shared earlier during the press conference that Good Enough was inspired by dramas he’s watched, the people around him, and the places he’s been to and the people he’s encountered.

VIDEO MESSAGE FROM FANS

We’re not crying, you’re crying. Chanyeol’s adoring fans prepared a special video message fan project, where they relayed their messages to him in English, Filipino, and Korean all about how much they love him, and how he and EXO have changed their lives. From recounting how long they’ve supported him, giving him their well-wishes, and complimenting , the video message was terribly sweet, and made for a special, memorable moment during the fanmeet.

HAWAK KAMAY

Chanyeol clearly favors the Filipino hit Hawak Kamay by Yeng Constantino, performing it here every chance he gets, even back during EXO’s first concert here in 2013. He’ll never get tired of it, and neither will we.

FIRST SNOW

EXO’s popular holiday-season track from 2013 First Snow gets its flowers during the first snowfall of the season in South Korea, and the dance challenge by Hwang Sehun this year has been a trend among TikTokers and idols alike. During the fanmeet, Chanyeol’s fans urged him to perform the challenge, and he did a little bit of the choreography before assuring he’ll get his members to do it with him first.

At the press conference before the fanmeet, Chanyeol had some wonderful words for fans or anyone who is going through a difficult time. “Do as you wish,” he advises. “Whether it’s your profession or relationship with other people, I think the most important thing is follow your heart. Because whenever you do, you will never regret it.”

Thinking of living on your own soon? Here are some tips from the mayora herself, Frances Cabatuando.

Whether as a right to adulthood or a new chapter of your favorite fictional character, moving out of your parents’ home and living alone is seen as one of the greatest signs of independence. Owning your own house, apartment, or condo, especially at a young age, goes beyond a Pinterest board and is a real responsibility. But with how big of a change moving out of your nest, it might seem overwhelming to know where to begin, something that Frances Cabatuando knows quite well. 

Before she became the founder of Home Buddies and immersed herself in homemaking as the queen of home living, she was once a young woman who took the step to embrace her independence and live alone, and she’s here to share her tips and advice with young people who are also approaching that living alone stage. Check out what the mayora has to say below. 

COMMIT TO IT

It goes without saying that living alone is a big deal. It goes beyond being just an aesthetic choice but a sign of independence, not to mention big responsibility. For Frances, she yearned to be on her own after years of living in her Filipino-Chinese household. So, when it came time to move out by herself, she told her parents that she’d pay the rent for her condo herself. 

As they say, every journey begins with a simple step, and committing to that first step is a good way to start. “Once you have that commitment of having to pay a certain amount every month, you will also force yourself to reach that amount. So really commit to it and trust yourself that you will make it happen because you’ll always find a way.” Once you decide that going solo is in your cards, commit to it and make it happen, which will then flow into the other aspects of your living alone era.  

IT’S NOT ALWAYS LIKE IN THE VLOGS

Whether it be in movies, TV shows, or social media, pop culture has sometimes portrayed living alone as this cool right of passage where people have aesthetic rooms. But living alone shouldn’t be viewed with purely rose-colored glasses. Unless you have a large budget and resources, it can get tough at the beginning. As Frances shares, she started with just a mattress. “When I started, all I had was a mattress on the floor, literally my single mattress.” She’d often buy her furniture for less at HMR. Eventually, Frances would work her way up, often buying cheap home essentials like an aircon, refrigerator, internet, and an actual bed. So, set your expectations accordingly. 

TAKE IT SLOW

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so it’s acceptable if how you envisioned your place to look isn’t there. Don’t get discouraged if your dream space isn’t there on day one. Work your way up and use your connections to your advantage. Also, even if you have the resources to splurge, Frances advises to not front-load everything at the start. From personal experiences to utilities, it can get a lot, so stretch that budget where you can. And just because you don’t have the budget to afford luxury items doesn’t mean you should leave your place looking like a dump. 

You can still achieve an aesthetic even on a budget. That’s the mantra of Frances, who settled on a certain design because it fit her style sensibilities and didn’t cost an arm and a leg to afford. Also, keeping a certain aesthetic in mind will help make your shopping easier as you know what and what not to get. 

IT’S AN EYE-OPENING EXPERIENCE

Just thinking about all the responsibilities needed when living alone is enough to turn off many people. But as Frances sees it, it’s those same responsibilities that make the move worth it. “Once you live alone, you’ll know and you’ll learn things about yourself and about the world.” From budget, finances, food, taxes, and more, living alone will put you on the fast track to knowing those adulting skills you’ll need as you get older. 

Also, having your own place gives you the chance to detach from the hustle and bustle of the world and even your family as you have actual quiet time for yourself to think and reflect. As she explains, “Now that I live alone I really like quiet time na talagang eerie silence. You get to pause and be in the moment and that matters.” 

BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS

Living in your own place doesn’t just mean you focus on yourself. A good homeowner also takes note of their surroundings, starting with their neighbors and facilities. “I highly suggest that you know your neighbors,” shares Frances. “If it’s a condo, look outside. Are the elevators working? Is it clean, too?” Moving into your own home entails a keen sense of your neighborhood and community you’ll immerse yourself in. Also, while you can turn to Pinterest or YouTube for inspiration, at the end of the day, it’s your home, so, trust your gut and do what you feel is best for your home. 

RENT OR OWN YOUR OWN HOUSE? CHECK YOUR LIFESTYLE

The debate between renting a condo or owning your own house has been waged for decades as both sides give valid arguments about why one choice is better than the other. Mayora Frances’ take? Think of where you will be and what you want to do five to ten years from now. Frances gives the example of if you see yourself constantly on the move or even moving abroad, don’t splurge on the investment of your own house. 

Take into consideration where you see yourself in the future as that will guide you on where you want to spend your hard-earned money. And as Frances points out, despite what some people may say, just because you don’t own your own home doesn’t mean you aren’t saving. There’s nothing wrong with renting. At the end of the day, make the decisions that make the most sense in your life and how you envision yourself as you get older.

After the successful release of the One Piece live-action adaptation series, Netflix is bringing more of Monkey D. Luffy’s story to screens with a new animated remake.

In a cool Christmas gift for fans, One Piece is coming back to screens with a new anime series. As announced by Netflix, the manga-turned-series (turned live-action series) will have another iteration of its story released: The One Piece, a series produced by WIT Studio in collaboration with Netflix.

One Piece as a manga started in 1997, with over a hundred volumes and over a thousand chapters as of late. The anime series, which first aired in 1999, crossed the 1000th episode threshold in 2021. One Piece, the live-action series, premiered on Netflix in August 2023. In celebration of the franchise’s 25 years in culture, a remake of the classic anime will be produced by WIT Studios, the same studio behind the anime adaptations of Spy X Family and Attack on Titan Season 1-3.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Following its predecessors, The One Piece will chronicle the journey of Monkey D. Luffy, an aspiring pirate who sets sail with his Straw Hats crew in search of the mysterious One Piece treasure. He gets the ability to manipulate his body like rubber after eating a mysterious, magical Devil Fruit and uses the ability to fight enemies that try to stop him from achieving his ultimate goals. He also befriends people along the way in his journey.

The live-action One Piece series follows the same storyline, and was a huge hit. Starring Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, One Piece was recently renewed for a season 2, which will arrive on Netflix in the coming year or the next. In the meantime, the 21st season of the OG anime titled Egghead will air on January 24.

Currently in production, The One Piece will be reinterpreted and made fresh by an all-new animation team and focus on the East Blue saga, the introductory storyline of One Piece. It is in this saga or chapter where Luffy is introduced and he meets his ragtag crew of the Straw Hat Pirates. Fans are already hyped for a reinvented, revamped, more digestible anime that will build on the classic franchise and get new fans to check out the story. While there’s no release date yet, it looks like people are seated and ready to set sail with Luffy and the Straw Hats once more.
