7 Of Darren Espanto’s Best Songs That You Need To Add To Your Playlist ASAP

line
One of the best young talents in the industry.

Darren Espanto has been slaying local and international stages for nearly a decade now. He also has a discography filled with banging songs you should have been listening to all this time.

When a then 13-year-old Darren Espanto participated in the first season of The Voice Kids Philippines, it was clear to many that the Filipino-Canadian was destined to go places. And true enough, that has happened. Taking second place in the competition, Darren used it as a spring broad to launch a career that has brought him all over the world. Now, he is regarded as one of the best performers of the new generation, displaying both natural talent with dancing and his signature soaring vocals. Even though he just turned 21, Darren has mainstay status in the industry, and despite this, his career still has a long way to go. Whether you are a long time fan or just curious why he’s a constant presence on variety shows, here are some of his best songs that you need to get into.

SANA TAYO NA

Tapping fellow Gen Z musician Jayda for this duet, Darren Espanto and Jayda tug at the heartstrings with Sana Tayo Na. A love song through and through, the track is about falling in love and hoping to end up with them. Darren and Jayda sound phenomenal on the band-driven track that reaches its emotional crescendo at its finale.

PABALIK SA’YO

Darren’s most recent song as of this writing, Pabalik Sa’yo sees the young musician in his most mature point yet. The R&B banger has Darren singing about looking back to a former flame because at the end of the day, he always goes back to her. The grown-up sound suits Darren well as he channels the song’s emotions through his voice.

STUCK

Even though this song was released during pre-puberty Darren, that doesn’t deny that Stuck can get stuck in your head. The guitar driven-track is surprisingly mature for the then teen Darren as the song deals with the fact that a relationship he thought was possible isn’t meant to be, though he does have hope in the end. Darren’s voice is what carries this cut from the selftitled album as he croons about young love and heartbreak.

TAMA NA

While Darren has a lot of songs that deal with being and falling in love, he also has tracks that deal with the opposite end of that. Tama Na is one of his best examples. The R&B-inspired track sees Darren sing about breaking up with a flame for not treating their relationship seriously. His voice is on-point as always as he pains about having a less then committed partner. The song also signaled a new era for Darren, one where he’s older and taking more mature themes and sounds. And the accompanying music video is also arguably one of his best.

SASAGIPIN KITA

Musically, Sasagipin Kita shines through Darren’s voice and touching message. A track he penned himself, Sasagipin Kita is about being there for that special someone during their time of need. Darren weaves through the notes as he delivers the emotions and a heartwarming tale of support. And let’s not forget that high note before the final chorus.

MARRY ME, MARRY YOU

Darren Espanto and OSTs are a match made in heaven as seen in this track. Marry Me, Marry Your serves as the official theme song for the show of the same name. It features a fun and upbeat sound about love that has an excellent use of trumpets. The style suits Darren well and we wouldn’t mind seeing more of this kind of music from him in the future.

CHANDELIER

Technically, this is a cover, but Darren’s covers are next level. And this list wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t include this. It’s a cover so iconic even non-fans know it. Even Nicki Minaj had to stan. Sia’s Chandelier is one of the hardest modern day songs to sing but Darren bodied it. He effortlessly went through the high notes as he gave his spin on the 2014 hit.

ICYMI, Here’s What Went Down at the Levi’s 501 Day Shindig

line
A little party never killed nobody. ?

Having a bad case of FOMO? Don’t fret! We’ve got the latest buzz on what happened at this year’s Levi’s 501 Day

It was on the 20th of May in 1873 when the world’s first blue jean, the Levi’s 501, received its official patent. Fast forward to just a few days before its 149th anniversary, May 18, 2022 to be exact, we celebrated 501 Day with a bang—a special event not only to raise our glasses to the jean that’s been with us for decades now, but to also formally launch the cover partnership between NYLON Manila, Levi’s, and Issa Pressman.

As the event was about to begin, Yellow Brick Media PR Director Franco Saycon welcomed and thanked everyone for joining Levi’s in this momentous occasion. It’s not everyday, especially this time around, that we all get to be in each other’s company to celebrate a crowd-favorite denim jean that is simply iconic.

Franco was also joined by Kat Costas, SEA E-Commerce Marketing Lead for Levi’s, and eventually the star of the night, Issa Pressman, who both gave their warmest welcome to those of us in attendance. With the opportunity and honor that Issa was given, which was to be the Filipino visionary to work on the Levi’s Traveling 501, she also shared how she was able to give a glimpse of the beauty and heart of the Philippines to her fellow visionaries around Southeast Asia by incorporating a charming sunset in her painting, as well as the word “Pinay” around it.

“To be able to represent the Philippines through my art with all of my heart—[it was] amazing.”

Issa Pressman on her feelings towards being the Filipino visionary for the Levi’s Traveling 501

NYLON Manila Editor-in-Chief Angelo Ramirez de Cartagena was then called to join them to finally unveil the much-awaited NYLON Manila Headline cover featuring none other than, as Angelo said, “Miss Issa Pressman, our Kween of all trades.” Upon the unfolding of the cover, Issa got to proudly show off the 501 jean she worked on, as well as her other works of art that were included in our money shot.

Unparalleled creativity all around

Throughout the event, DJs Marga on the Mic and Euric Lumanog got everyone dancing on our feet like there was no tomorrow. Issa even graced us with an impromptu performance of her song “Monkey Business” at one point! Truly an artist in her own space.

Guests were also welcome to get photos taken by MEETKESO at the designated 501 Photo Wall by the entrance. We became our own work of art as the event’s team of artists from Wee Will Doodle completed the entire look of every single photo by adding incredibly creative and colorful illustrations around it, making each snapshot a one of a kind.

Situated on the other side of the room was the Levi’s Tailor Shop where all of us were encouraged to go wild and crazy by customizing our own sets of 501 tote bags, jackets, pants, and shirts with the help of their funky patches and pins of different designs. Our visions were then brought to life thanks to the remarkable team behind the shop. Issa even hopped on the DIY train by helping a lucky guest customize their own pair of 501 jeans! Now isn’t that a perfect way to end the night, or what?

Celebrate the Levi’s 501 jean with us by visiting their website, and even score a pair of the iconic pants for yourself.

Bella Poarch, Liza Soberano, James Reid, And More Filipinos Took Over The Gold House Gala In High Style

line
One big room full of the coolest Filipinos.

When they said go for gold, the Filipino crew really followed through by showing up and showing out at the Gold House Gala this weekend.

Over the weekend, some of the coolest Filipinos showed up at the Gold House Gala to honor notable members of the AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) Community in Los Angeles.

For starters, Gold House is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing and supporting homegrown talents in the Asian community. Some of the attendees were Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding, Kevin Woo, and Eugene Yang to name a few, all repping their flags right when they commanded the red, errr, gold carpet. Filipina rapper Ruby Ibarra blew everyone away with her performance along with Anik Khan and Thuy.

Of course, we didn’t expect some of the biggest names from the homeland to be present too, like Bella Poarch, James Reid, and Liza Soberano. From the terno to the barong tagalog, scroll down to see your faves serving up fashion in the most Filipino way at the Gold House Gala below.

READ MORE: Paris? Nah. Welcome to Bretman Fashion Week

1. BELLA POARCH

You can bet that Bella Poarch making a statement in a hot pink dress by Jason Wu will be living in our heads rent-free from now on. Her bag of choice? A mini bag carved in gold by Blumera and the cutest star earrings. A look.

2. JAMES REID

Actor, musician, and CEO James Reid really said, “I am golden.” Showing up in a sharp black and gold spackled suit at the Gala’s red carpet, we can’t wait for more of the Hello singer’s projects in the near future.

3. LIZA SOBERANO

A round of applause for Liza Soberano because she showed up in nothing but Filipino fashion! A roll call you ask? Her all black terno was designed by Anthony Ramirez, jewelry by Tessera, and her minaudiere by Neil Felipp.

4. GEENA ROCERO

Filipino-American trans advocate Geena Rocero has proven time and time again that she’s always raised her flag loud and proud. Aside from modeling, she’s also a TED talk speaker, the founder of media company Gender Proud, and was the first ever trans woman featured by Playboy magazine. At the Gold House Gala, Geena flexed another Filipino designer wearing an asymmetrical embellished blue gown by Veejay Floresca, whom she proudly calls her trans sister.

5. SARAH BURKE

Sarah Burke is the Editor-in-Chief of LGBTQIA+ magazine Them. She’s a Filipino born and raised in Hawaii and has worked for VICE, created award-winning stock photo library Gender Spectrum collection that featured trans and non-binary models. Sarah wore a modern terno with floral prints at the Gold House Gala, not to mention the leather belt that cinched the waist.

6. DINO RAY-RAMOS

Dino Ray-Ramos is a journalist and producer that’s been shining a light on marginalized voices in film and media, the LGBTQIA+ community, and underrepresented AAPI through his work. Is it just us or are we getting major Dr. Strange with his cape? Very suave.

7. TIMOTHY GRANADEROS

Timothy Granaderos is best known for his role in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. At the Gold House Gala red carpet, he honored his Filipino roots by wearing an embroidered barong by The Mestizo LA.

8. JON JON BRIONES AND G TONGI

Veteran Filipino actors were also present on the Gold Gala red carpet. G Tongi was in a terno inspired by the barong, and Jon Jon Briones, best known for his role in Miss Saigon wore a gray camisa de chino.

9. MANNY JACINTO

Manny Jacinto, a Filipino-Canadian actor whose face is probably familiar if you’re watching The Good Place, was present at the Gold House Gala, too. Pictured next to Timothy Granaderos, Manny wears a barong with floral embroidery in honor of Asian excellence, of course.

10. CHRIS OLSEN

If you’re in TikTok’s constant black hole, chances are high that you might’ve seen Chris Olsen on your For You Page. He’s the content creator who shares the funny conversations he has with his Lola and does hilarious skits as the “gay uncle” of the family. At the Gold House Gala, Chris showed up shirtless in Versace. A mood forever.

11. SHELBY RABARA

Filipino-American dancer and actress Shelby Rabara, who voices Peridot in Steven Universe looked like real-life royalty in a bespoke terno by Vinta Gallery. We don’t know about you, but Shelby and Harry Shum Jr. are one underrated couple.

12. RAIN VALDEZ

Emmy-nominated actress Rain Valdez always reps her heritage no matter where she goes. From being a Filipino-American, to fighting for trans rights, to slowly becoming a changemaker in the film industry, she’s the real deal. She keeps it neat in a red lace dress with silver appliques at the gold carpet.

13. VALKYRAE

Gracing the gold carpet is our favorite streamer, Valkyrae. Everything about this look screams perfection, from the long braid, the silver bangles, to her emerald green gown. Now all we’re missing is a selfie with BFF, Bella Poarch.

14. TIA CARRERE

If we’re talking legends, Tia Carrere should be a hall-of-famer by now. The Filipino-American actress has been everywhere, and we’re more than happy to have seen her with fellow Pinoys at the Gold House Gala. Man, we’d do everything to look THAT good in our 50s and rock body con dresses anytime we please.

15. JORDAN ANDINO

Chef Jordan Andino has been known for his Filipino-meets-French cuisine. Aside from being a restaurateur, Jordan is also one of the most sought after reality show hosts (yes, he’s the guy from Food Network). He looked every inch the dapper in a blue suit at the Gold House Gala.

GOT7

GOT7 Is The Name: GOT7 Make Their Long Awaited Return With The Fun And Laid Back ‘NANANA’

line
The oh eh oh part is earworm material.

After more than a year since their last release, GOT7 has proven that the magic is still their with title track NANANA and their new self-titled EP.

Related: Return Of The Greats: 2022 Is Shaping Up To Be The Year Of The K-Pop Comeback

No matter what era of K-pop you entered, there’s no denying that GOT7 deserves a spot in the K-pop hall of fame. Debuting at a time when K-pop was beginning to truly permeate the global stage, the former JYP boy group stood out as one of the best amongst 3rd gen. Banging songs, timeless classics, killer stages, and diverse and lovable personalities saw GOT7 attain global success. But for all the success and acclaim that they achieved, it seemed though as if GOT7 wasn’t always seen in the same light as some of their contemporaries are. Ahgase know all too well the sometimes half-hearted way JYP would treat GOT7 over the years, the company often being accused of not giving the group its promo, attention, and freedom it deserves.

Image

So, when GOT7 parted ways with JYP in January 2021, it was a start of a new era, not just for the members themselves, but for the group as a whole. The past year was then filled with solo activities from every member. But at its core, Mark, JAY B, Jackson, Jinyoung, Youngjae, BamBam, Yugyeom were still GOT7 and fans patiently waited for their return. And that time has finally come. After much hype and anticipation, GOT7 has made their first comeback post JYP split, new logo and all. And the end result is new music that feels fresh yet still holds that distinct GOT7 sound.

I’M FEELING GOOD, NANANA

Taking a step back from the hyper pop and EDM beats that GOT7 has explored in the past, title track NANANA is more laidback yet still fun with its sound. The mid-tempo pop song is about love and centers on the good feelings you get when spending quality time with your special someone. No matter what you do, as long as you do it with that person, it’s worth it. While NANANA may not have the most complex of productions, it’s relatively chill sound works well in its favor. It’s almost flowy and ethereal in its sound as GOT7 brings you back into their musical world.

Image
Image

This fun and dreamy vibe is also reflected in the track’s music video. We see the group dance and sing through different dream-like sets. The visuals feature a heavy use of clouds, flowers, and pastels to signify the wholesome nature of the track.

Image
Image

Aside from the title track, fans also have their new EP, the simply titled GOT7, to look forward to. At six tracks long, it’s a relatively lean 20 minute listen, but one that’s filled with strong tracks. There’s the fun and groovy Drive Me To The Moon, as well as the sentimental closing track Don’t Leave Me Alone. Splashed in their signature green color, this new music, new era in fact, of the group is GOT7 as who they are. It’s their return as exemplified in their Homecoming fan even/concert. And it’s also an introduction to new fans that this is GOT7, a group with unique who knows how to make good music and deserve their place in the spotlight.

7 Moments From The Star Magic 30th All Star Games That Just Make Sense

line
Here we are again, smiling at the relationships of other people.

From Belle Mariano and Loisa Andalio being the best cheerleaders to Esnyr Ranollo living the fanboy life, the action at the Star Magic Games 2022 wasn’t just on the court.

Related: Your Fave Star Magic Artists Are Bringing The Heat And Body Positivity This Summer

Our favorite stars aren’t just good at acting, singing, and dancing. They also are pros on the courts. And that was on full display during the long anticipated Star Magic Games 2022 held at the Araneta Coliseum on May 22. Artists from across the spectrum of Star Magic traded in their mics and scripts for badminton rackets and basketball shoes as they competed in games of badminton, volleyball, and basketball. The anticipated sports fest of the stars was a chance for us to see our faves flex their athletic prowess. But the games also became an opportunity for us to see these stars let loose and have fun off the court because you never know what’s going to happen during a thrilling sporting event. So, here are some moments from the Star Magic Games 2022 that just felt correct.

BINI’S JHOANNA AND MALOI FANGIRLING OVER DANIEL PADILLA

Daniel Padilla played during the Men’s Doubles Badminton and won it alongside his partner Neil Coleta. And while many people were happy to see DJ there, no more were than BINI’s Jhoanna and Maloi. They high-key had a fangirl moment when he entered the arena and even had signs ready for him. The best part about it all is that DJ signed their posters and told them that he’s watched their music videos. Even your faves fangirl over your faves.

ESNYR RANOLLO GETTING HIS ENTIRE LIFE AND A HALF

@esnyrdump

NASA ‘YO NA ANG LAHAT PATI ANG PUSO KO

♬ DEEJAY – esnyrDUMP

From TikTok star to signed artist, Esnyr Ranollo was living the life in 2021. And his luck continued during the Star Magic Games. While he didn’t play, he did sit courtside ready to cheer on his friends in the industry. One such friend was his Love At First Sight co-star Donny Pangilinan where Esnyr vigorously cheered him on. In fact, Donny got close to Esnyr and did something that would give any fan a heart attack. Also, there’s the fact that Esnyr’s a longtime KathNiel fan and he actually got to meet and take pics with Daniel himself. He even got to chat for a bit with Joshua Garcia. Imagine getting to do all that. Sana all Esnyr!

BELLE MARIANO WEARING DONNY PANGILINAN’S JERSEY

There were many stars fans rooted for during the Star Magic Games. But one of the brightest and most cheered for was undoubtedly DonBelle. We all know Donny is a talented basketball player and he even got a medal for being included in the Mythical Five. But Belle made sure to be the best cheerleader she can be even if she didn’t play. For starters, she came out wearing Donny’s 10 jersey. When they started playing, she then changed to wear his 15 Pangilinan jersey Donny wore during his Brent days. Even though Donny’s team lost, Belle was right their ready to cheer Donny and the team on until the end.

LOISA ANDALIO BEING A SUPPORTIVE GIRLFRIEND

@pongkanprod Sana all muna tayo now?? #loisaandalio #ronniealonte ♬ original sound – Lyrics Art. ??

Loisa Andalio was giving her 120% to cheer on her boyfriend Ronnie Alonte. With camera at hand, Loisa was ready to give it her all to root for Ronnie and the team. Whenever Ronnie would score, Loisa was spotted dancing courtside, showing off how happy she is. Plus, we love how Loisa and Belle were like their team’s unofficial cheerleaders. It was an unexpected Pat and Trish reunion.

DANIEL PADILLA BEING A SUPPORTIVE BIG BROTHER

@sofiance22 Very supportive brother to Carmella and Analain. The best cheerer hahaha??©️#trending #fyp #djp #allstargame2022 #abscbnkapamilya #kathnielfan #kathniel #kathrynbernardo #danielpadilla #starmagicgame2022 #carmellaford #analainlim #analainsalvador #karlaestrada #joshuagarcia ♬ Magic In The Air – Magic System/Chawki

Not only were there many people there to cheer on DJ, but he too was also cheering on the other players. In particular, he cheered and was rooting for his younger sister Carmella Ford and cousin Analain Salvador. He was spotted courtside during their volleyball game cheering on the girls, ready to lend a hand. We’re very much here for seeing DJ in his kuya mode.

ALEXA ILACAD CARING FOR KD ESTRADA

If you follow KDLex, then you know that KD and Alexa share a relationship that goes deeper than most. And that was on display during the Star Magic Games. At one point during basketball, KD got injured and Alexa was there to help him. She looked visibly worried and even forbid him to play again post-injury. Alexa cared for KD during their PBB days and that continues to this day.

MELA HABIJAN PLAYING IN WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Despite how far we’ve come in terms of LGBTQIA+ inclusivity, the reality is that Philippine society still has a long way to go to achieve true acceptance. This is why when Mela Habijan was included in the women’s volleyball team, it was a win for the trans community. In a time when trans women participating in cisgendered women’s sports is a hot button issue, Mela playing in women’s volleyball was just treated as it should be, a non issue. Now, it’s high time to get the ball rolling with this necessary conversation of inclusion, yes? Yes.

10/10. Would stay again in Harry's House

Harry Styles opens the doors to Harry’s House while G22 slows things down for their first comeback in this week’s new music round-up.

Related: POLL: GEN Z-APPROVED HIT

While the summer season begins to wind down, that’s not stopping the music world from heating things up. Among the many things that have happened in the past week, Stray Kids’ Bang Chan jammed to Yakap by Alex Bruce. Keeping it in the JYPE family, TWICE had an eventful week with their sold-out stadium concert in America, the launch of each member’s individual IG account, and the announcement that Nayeon is dropping her debut mini album, IM NAYEON, this June 24.

K-POP.FLEX shook Frankfurt, Germany while Red Velvet, NCT Dream, and more K-pop stars are set to perform in the country in the coming months. Camila Cabello was announced as the newest judge for the upcoming season for The Voice while SNSD announced their highly anticipated comeback. Finally, Taylor Swift is now a doctor after receiving her honorary doctorate from NYU. Of course, let’s not forget all the new music that came our way this week. Get your playlists and AUX cords ready in our list of the some of the must-listen new music of the week.

LATE NIGHT TALKING – HARRY STYLES

Finally, Harry Styles’ new album, Harry’s House is here and it was worth the wait. Taking a bit of a step back from his rock sound, Harry’s House centers more on a pop, funk, acoustic sound that gives us everything we need. It’s a whole serve, but standouts include the fun opener Music For a Sushi Restaurant, the touching Matilda and Little Freaks, and the whole vibe that’s Cinema.

YOURS – CONAN GRAY

Conan Gray is bringing about the sad boi hours with his new song, Yours. The piano-driven track is a beautiful yet heartbreaking tale of Conan realizing that his relationship is going nowhere because his significant other does not care for him. It’s a sad tale told through Conan’s striking voice.

NGITI – MATTHAIOS

Your “in love” playlist might get an update soon thanks to Matthaios’ new song, Ngiti. The musician strips things down to a guitar driven track about enjoying the company of your significant other. It’s a cute song that appreciates the little things you like about someone.

TOO PRECIOUS – EM BEIHOLD

There’s nothing wrong with playing it safe, or at least that’s what Em Beihold thinks in her new song, Too Precious. Mixing elements of pop, jazz, and 1930s vintage, the song sets it sights on a flame who expects his partner to act a certain way. As the song suggests, Em isn’t here for her partner expecting her to be too reckless.

NOVA – YOUNG COCOA

Rapper and singer Young Cocoa mixes a bossa nova sample with modern hip-hop flair on his new single Nova. The catchy, laid-back track is about young love that captures the bubbly giddiness and breeziness of a new love. The song is set to be included in his debut EP coming later this year.

HIGIT SA MUNDO – HEY ITS JE

In the mood to get senti? Then you may want to press play on Hey Its Je’s latest track, higit sa mundo. The R&B-esque track is all about reflecting on a past relationship and finding it hard to move on. Hey Its Je is here to remind us that it isn’t always easy when that ex changed your life for the better.

CANDY SUGAR POP – ASTRO

ASTRO said you’re going to bust a move thanks to their latest comeback Candy Sugar Pop. The candy sugar pop in question is referring to a potential flame as the pop-funk groove is about spending time with a significant other. The track serves as the lead single for their recently released third full length album, Drive to the Starry Road. Aroha definitely have a lot to celebrate this week.

MANGO STICKY RICE – MILLI

Not only does food satisfy us, it can also inspire as well. Many forms of art have taken to food for inspiration, and that includes music. Rising Thai rapper MILLI is the latest musician to use food as their muse with her new song Mango Sticky Rice. At just one minute and 30 seconds long, the song is just about the dessert, but who wouldn’t pass a plate of mango sticky rice. And aside from the song itself, the bars MILLI serves are straight fire.

BABABLIK – G22

Earlier this year, G22 made their debut with the loud and proud BANG! But for their first comeback, the girls slow things down and show off their versatile charms with Babalik. Straying away from the pop/EDM sound, Babalik is a sensual R&B banger about feeling conflicted when in love. It’s an unexpected move for this P-pop group, but one that shows that G22 isn’t afraid to mix things up. Also, their voices are *chef’s kiss* and carry the song from start to finish.

DEEP – HYO

Girls’ Generation are set to make their first comeback in years this August. So, while we wait for that, let’s enjoy music from the members’ solo releases, such as HYO’s newest song DEEP. Dipping once again into her signature EDM sound, DEEP is another strong serve from the artist. It’s earworm of a chorus plays into the songs spider aesthetic as HYO channels her inner black widow in a relationship. The track serves as the lead single off her 1st mini album of the same name.

THIS HELL – RINA SAWAYAMA

Following 2020’s exceptional SAWAYAMA, Rina Sawayama is set to enter a new era with the release of her new album, Hold The Girl, this September 2, 2022. And as the opening for this new era, Rina treated us to the release of her new song, This Hell. The fun pop-rock track revolves around how life can feel like hell sometimes, but it’s worth it when you’re with that special someone.

MOVE – TNX

Up until this point, P Nation was mostly known as a company that housed underrated and mistreated artists and gave them a platform to truly show off their talents. But now, the company enters a new era as they recently debuted their very first idol group, boy group TNX. Forming through a reality show, makes their debut with the hard-hitting MOVE. So far, the results are promising with a strong stable of vocalists and rappers. If you want to hear more of the group, give their debut EP, WAY UP, a listen.

FOR THE GIRLS – HAYLEY KIYOKO

When Hayley Kiyoko named her new song for the girls, she meant it. Serving as her first solo single in nearly a year, for the girls is a fun summer jam that celebrates all types of women during the sunny months.

SHE’S THE BOSS – THE BOYZ

THE BOYZ recently dropped their latest Japanese comeback with SHE’S THE BOSS and it’s noise music in the best way possible. It’s starts out with a heavy EDM sound that makes way for an R&B bridge then transitions to an EDM-dream pop chorus that works surprisingly well. It’s a bit of a shame though that Eric wasn’t able to participate in this comeback.

PICCOLO – BBNO$

bbno$’s (baby no money) new single piccolo is an irresistible track that features both a catchy beat and strong bars. You wouldn’t be wrong to include this short but sweet track in your party playlist. This is the second release from bbno$’s anticipated upcoming project bag or die.

DUSK – MANILA KILLA

Manila Killa recently dropped a new single titled Dusk featuring singer-songwriter Lights. According to Killa, the song is meant to be played when heading out on the open road, mixing the flows and feelings of both artists. The electronic banger will be included in his debut album of the same name set to drop on July 21.

BOP – WILL JOSEPH COOK

It’s quite bold to name your own song BOP. But Will Joseph Cook made sure his new song matched its title. The catchy single exudes summer party anthem as it captures that intoxicating moment when the vibe feels right with someone, and you shoot your shot.

And now, she can add doctor to that list, manifesting a dream that she let out into the world during her 73 Questions interview with Vogue. On the morning of May 18, New York time, she received a Doctor of Fine Arts honor from Jason King, chair of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music from New York University.

After being given a glowing introduction that both honored her musical and philanthropic achievements, Taylor was bestowed an honorary doctorate. She then went on to give the commencement address to the graduation class of 2022. For her first public appearance of 2022, Taylor delivered a 23-minute address at Yankee Stadium. (Sadly, the 22-minute mark was a missed opportunity.)

“Hi, I’m Taylor,” she began, as if it was no big deal. The last time she was in a stadium this big, she was “dancing in heels and wearing a glittery leotard,” and now expressing how she feels that she’s there because “I have a song called 22, there were a lot of references that a true Swiftie would know by heart. She even pulled a line from 1989 by saying, “Welcome to New York. It’s been waiting for you,” after of course, taking the time to praise New York University’s Class of 2022 for graduating and surviving during a pandemic, as well as giving thanks to those who helped them get to where they are. “We are each a patchwork quilt of those who have loved us,” she quipped.

But more importantly, Taylor used her address to share some important worldly wisdom that she learned throughout her historic career. Anyone can relate to what she had to say, even if you weren’t at Yankee Stadium, but it was more poignant for us at the cusp of the rest our lives. Here are some of the life lessons Taylor Swift imparted on us.

LEARN TO LET GO AND APPRECIATE THE SMALLER THINGS IN LIFE

Lazy loaded image

Entering a new phase in your life can be exciting. But it can also be heavy as there are so many things to now take into consideration. For Taylor Swift, life shouldn’t always be about dealing with everything at all times. “Life can be heavy, especially if you try to carry it all at once…Part of growing up and moving into new chapters of your life is about catch and release. What I mean by that is, knowing what things to keep, and what things to release.” She explains to the crowd that you shouldn’t devote all your time and energy to things that take up negative energy. “You get to pick what your life has time and room for. Be discerning.”

To that end, she brings up cringe and how it’s okay to look back at your life and laugh at your mistakes. “Cringe is unavoidable over a lifetime…You can’t avoid it, so don’t try to. For example, I had a phase where, for the entirety of 2012, I dressed like a 1950s housewife. But you know what? I was having fun. Trends and phases are fun. Looking back and laughing is fun.”

DON’T BE ASHAMED OF WANTING THINGS

Image

Being ambitious is sometimes is often frowned upon, especially for those persistent lot who know what they want and how to get it. But in reality, there’s nothing wrong with having dreams and having a strong passion for what you believe in. “I’d like to say that I’m a big advocate for not hiding your enthusiasm for things. It seems to me that there is a false stigma around eagerness in our culture of ‘unbothered ambivalence.’ This outlook perpetuates the idea that it’s not cool to ‘want it.’ That people who don’t try hard are fundamentally more chic than people who do,” said Taylor. Instead of acting like you don’t care, don’t dull your passions. “Never be ashamed of trying. Effortlessness is a myth.”

You’re young and the world is at your fingertips. There’s nothing wrong with aiming for top bunk. “I know it can be really overwhelming figuring out who to be, and when. Who you are now and how to act in order to get where you want to go. I have some good news: it’s totally up to you. I also have some terrifying news: it’s totally up to you.”

MAKING MISTAKES IS OKAY

Image

Taylor Swift has seen the highest of highs in her career. But she’s also experienced levels of low that seem like the depths of hell. Take it from Taylor when she says that your mistakes should be used as tools to become a better person. “I became a young adult while being fed the message that if I didn’t make any mistakes, all the children of America would grow up to be perfect angels. However, if I did slip up, the entire earth would fall off its axis and it would be entirely my fault and I would go to pop star jail forever and ever. It was all centered around the idea that mistakes equal failure and ultimately, the loss of any chance at a happy or rewarding life.”

No one’s perfect, not even Taylor Swift. So, as cliché as it sounds, making mistakes won’t mean the end of the world. They just mean you have room to grow. “My experience has been that my mistakes led to the best things in my life. And being embarrassed when you mess up is part of the human experience. Getting back up, dusting yourself off and seeing who still wants to hang out with you afterward and laugh about it? That’s a gift. The times I was told no or wasn’t included, wasn’t chosen, didn’t win, didn’t make the cut…looking back, it really feels like those moments were as important, if not more crucial, than the moments I was told ‘yes.’”

Taylor Swift has always been one to use her personal experiences to fuel her creativity. And during her commencement address, she took the time to talk about her many stumbles, as well as what she’s learned from them. “Having the world treat my love life like a spectator sport in which I lose every single game was not a great way to date in my teens and twenties, but it taught me to protect my private life fiercely. Being publicly humiliated over and over again at a young age was excruciatingly painful, but it forced me to devalue the ridiculous notion of minute by minute, ever fluctuating social relevance and likability. Getting canceled on the internet and nearly losing my career gave me an excellent knowledge of all the types of wine.”

GET BACK AND START AGAIN

Image

In connection to the art of learning from your mistakes, Taylor also shared to the students that those stumbles should be moments to also get back up. Making mistakes and falling is never easy. But it’s all worth it if you learn from it.

“I know the pressure of living your life through the lens of perfectionism. And I know that I’m talking to a group of perfectionists because you are here today graduating from NYU. And so this may be hard for you to hear: In your life, you will inevitably misspeak, trust the wrong people, under-react, overreact, hurt the people who didn’t deserve it, overthink, not think at all, self-sabotage, create a reality where only your experience exists, ruin perfectly good moments for yourself and others… I’m not gonna lie, these mistakes will cause you to lose things. I’m trying to tell you that losing things doesn’t just mean losing. A lot of the time, when we lose things, we gain things too.”

YOU MAKE YOUR OWN LIFE

Image

Life is both scary and exciting. Having the possibility to do nearly anything you put your mind to, but being stopped by the reality of life. It can be cruel. But the thing about life is that it is never set in stone. It’s up to you to make your way in the life you chart, making stumbles and learning lessons along the way.

“I know it’s hard to know sometimes which path to take. There will be times in life when you need to stand up for yourself. Times when the right thing is to back down and apologize. Times when the right thing is to fight, times when the right thing is to turn and run, times to hold on with all you have and times to let go with grace. Sometimes the right thing to do is to throw out the old schools of thought in the name of progress and reform. Sometimes the right thing to do is to listen to the wisdom of those who have come before us. How will you know what the right choice is in these crucial moments? You won’t. Scary news is: you’re on your own now. Cool news is: You’re on your own now.”

Your life’s journey can get so crazy at times. But that’s the reason why they call it a journey because it’s meant to be a long process of choices that leads to ups and downs, hopefully more of the former than the latter. As Taylor says in her parting words, “We are led by our gut instincts, our intuition, our desires and fears, our scars and our dreams. And you will screw it up sometimes. So will I. And when I do, you will most likely read about on the internet. Anyway…hard things will happen to us. We will recover.”

Ken Suson Is Back And The Fan Theories About His Comeback Single, ‘Bulan,’ Are Here

line
Felip superior has returned.

Spoiler alert: it’s about Philippine mythology.

Ken Suson of SB19’s had one hell of a year. We’ve only been introduced to Felip, his solo moniker back in 2021 with the debut single Palayo wherein he raps in full Bisaya, but his fans can’t seem to get enough. After the boys of SB19 killed it at PPOP Convention and rumors about their comeback, the main dancer and lead vocalist is first in line with Bulan, Ken’s second solo single.

ANG SUSUNOD NA BERSIKULO

Ken (or Felip) first teased his fans in a tweet last month of him bathed in red lights, possibly foreshadowing what’s to come for his new single. A week later, he reveals the title of his song and a line that said, “Ang aking apoy ‘di niyo na maapula! Ako ang BULAN.” For starters, Bulan means moon, hence the emojis in Felip’s teasers. In the context of Philippine mythology, the name represents the deity of the moon, along with his sister Haliya. After postponing the release, Felip drops another teaser for the song and his fans are already going crazy. Check out some of their wildest theories below in time for the release.

1. FELIP IS THE BULAN AND THE BAKUNAWA SYMBOLIZES HIS BASHERS

The Bakunawa in Philippine mythology is known to be the dragon that swallows moons. With Ken being the center of attention for quite some time now, he’s the real life Bulan hounded by thousands of Bakunawas or “his bashers” as one fan theorized. Haliya on the other hand represents all his believers.

2. THE VEILED WOMAN IN THE TEASER IS HALIYA, THE LUNAR GODDESS

In Bulan’s teaser, we see a lady in red dancing. Fans speculate that it could be Haliya, the lunar goddess in Philippine mythology that wore a mask of gold to hide her beauty, hence the veil. She was said to be so beautiful, even the Bakunawa fell in love with her.

3. BULAN WAS SUPPOSED TO DROP ON THE BLOOD MOON TO “SCARE AWAY” THE BAKUNAWA

Felip postponed the initial release of the single which was supposed to be on May 15, a day where the Blood Moon is present. According to a fan who’s a fan of Philippine mythology, whenever this phenomenon happens, everybody has to make as much noise to attempt to scare the Bakunawa to release the moon. Our traditions just keep on surprising us.

4. BULAN SYMBOLIZES VICTORY

The beauty of Philippine mythology is that it’s open to interpretation. There’s no right or wrong theory, which makes it all the more interesting. A fan believes that the Bakunawa represents jealousy, Haliya is the inner warrior, which you have to conquer in order to fully realize the beauty of the Bulan.

5. COULD KEN BE THE BULAN OR THE BAKUNAWA?

We all have egos and that’s a fact. For his comeback single, fans are already guessing whether Felip is the Bulan or his nemesis, the Bakunawa. The possibilities are endless and if he continues to take inspiration from Philippine mythology, Felip might just change the game of P-Pop.

If you’re keeping an eye on Felip’s comeback single as much as we are, here’s his schedule of releases this month:

A Dream Come True: Miss Universe Philippines Queens Transformed Into Disney Princesses

Damsel in distress? Never heard of it.

Rabiya as Ariel, Beatrice as Belle, and Celeste as Cinderella? Be our guest.

When you wish upon a star, manifest, and commit to whatever your heart desires, the universe listens. Rabiya Mateo, Beatrice Luigi Gomez, and Celeste Cortesi were once wide-eyed dreamers to get the crown before they all won as Miss Universe Philipines queens. But who would’ve thought these women could also pass as real-life Disney princesses? TBH, it came as no surprise considering they’ve faced every villain, slayed dragons, and almost traded their mermaid fins in their journey as queens of the universe. So, imagine how it must’ve felt like when Rabiya, Beatrice, and Celeste all got to play as Ariel, Belle and Cinderella for a day! Like what Princess Merida said, “our fate lives within us; you only have to be brave enough to see it.” And so they did. Be our guest and check their transformation below!

In collaboration with makeup brand BYS Cosmetics and fashion photographer BJ Pascual, we’ve been blessed with the most magical visuals for the Disney collection that includes liquid lipsticks, mascara, sunscreen, eyeliners, serum blush, face masks, and brow pencils. If you’re a pop culture enthusiast just like us, it was a thrill to see Rabiya Mateo become a fully-realized siren as Ariel of The Little Mermaid, Beatrice Luigi Gomez was our favorite bookworm Belle, of Beauty and the Beast, and Celeste Cortesi as Cinderella with her chirping friends.

RABIYA MATEO AS ARIEL

Even before Rabiya Mateo bagged the Miss Universe Philippines 2020 crown, pageant fans were already telling her that she looks like a mermaid. Probably because of her sultriness, curiosity for things, and the way she carries herself with pride as an Ilonggo. In her BYS x Disney shoot styled by Eldzs Mejia, she wore an asymmetrical chainmail dress by Steph Tan that’s dripped in gold. Hairstylist Renz Pangilinan also gave Rabiya some enviable mermaid waves and makeup artist Anthea Bueno sealed the overall look with a red lip.

BEATRICE LUIGI GOMEZ AS BELLE

Get you a girl who’s a beauty and a beast all at the same time like Miss Universe Philippines 2021 Beatrice Luigi Gomez. Much like Belle, she’s been through it all. Winning pageants while completing her military training (she was promoted from corporal to General last year), you can’t deny Beatrice’s dedication to her craft. She stuns in the Disney x BYS collection wearing an embroidered cape and a gold gown by Job Dacon, bringing back the bushy brows trend.

CELESTE CORTESI AS CINDERELLA

People think Celeste Cortesi was born destined for the glass slippers, but she was not. Before winning her Miss Earth and Miss Universe Philippines titles, she worked as a model and store cashier back in Italy to help provide for her mother and sisters. Even without a fairy grandmother, Celeste was able to support herself and her family, making her a real-life Cinderella. Makeup artist Anthea Bueno even got the Disney Princess’ rosy cheeks right, along with the ethereal tendrils by hairstylist Renz Pangilinan. Props to set designer Princess Barretto for the blue birds who were the real stars of the campaign.

The Disney x BYS collection is now available at Watsons, The SM Store, and online on Amorfia, and ShopSM. The products are all paraben-free and hypoallergenic, with packaging that’s elegantly wrapped in gold. Truly fit for a princess.
